Metallica at Orion, 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Metallica

The outrage over Metallica headlining the upcoming Glastonbury Festival has gone ridiculous to ludicrous speed, but at least one group is presenting a somewhat legitimate gripe. (And no, we're not talking about Mogwai, who were thrown under the social media bus by a shite-y headline.) And if you don't agree with legitimacy, at least it's a different cry than "because they suck."

Remove Metallica from GlastonburyFestival for their support of Bear Hunting, a Facebook group intending to do exactly that, was created on May 25 and has since accrued over 13,000 likes. The moderators of the page take issue with James Hetfield's long-held support of big game hunting, particularly his narration duties on the History Channel's The Hunt, a series detailing Kodiak, Alaska hunters bent on bagging brown bears. (Two of these things are true: Eight states allow bear hunting. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game offers 496 hunting tags a year, given out via a lottery system. Critics say The Hunt starts well, but soon turns into a load.) Per the offended:

James Hetfield, lead singer of Metallica is a supporter and promoter of big game hunting. This does not represent the values of environmentalism that have come to be so important at Glastonbury.
No word from the band or the festival yet regarding the Facebook page, but Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis hasn't been opposed to hunting in some instances.

However, Metallica have said they may open their set with Oasis' "Wonderwall." So, yeah, that'll calm everyone down.

If you're in a masochistic mood, you can stream a 30 minute episode of Metallica's tour diary, MetOnTour (not just the name for the method of your conception used by your Deadhead parents), below.

Posted by Anonymous | June 5, 2014 4:54 PM

There are seriously over stages/tents/whatever at this stupid festival, just go watch something else if it bothers you that much.

Also, petition to get Metallica off, no complaints about Yoko Ono being on the lineup.

Of course you want to see Metallica Posted by Metallica | June 5, 2014 6:14 PM. They're your name and plus you're a red-blooded American male.

It's these post city boyz and their fruitiness that ruin everything. Do you know what they pay in rent? It's ridiculous. They're an epidemic.

High rents are gay.

Posted by Anonymous | June 5, 2014 7:49 PM

LOL people still care about Metallica?

Posted by Anonymous | June 5, 2014 10:11 PM

'Love all you people getting your shorts in a knot over a band who's last good album came out 23 years ago and that "black" album wasn't even a Metallica album in that it was so stylistically different from their previous output they could've and looking back should've changed the name when or at least after they put it out.

I don't consider Metallica after the black album Metallica. Why you people do is beyond me.

Posted by D | June 5, 2014 11:50 PM

Oh btw when I say "good album" I mean that's it. It is so ridiculously overrated like all the other big albums which came out in '91 save Red Hot Chili Peppers "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" which regardless of sales was hands down the best mainstream / major record label album in '91 (yeah better than Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Pearl Jam's "Ten" which had three solid songs tops as opposed to RHCP BSSM which was legitimately a start to finish masterpiece.)

Posted by D | June 5, 2014 11:53 PM

QOTSA are frat rock

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2014 1:11 AM

Frat guys like QOTSA and a gazillion other bands (RHCP etc.)

RCHP was/is wayyy more frat rock than QOTSA.

Posted by D | June 6, 2014 1:17 AM

1153 maybe the best mainstream / major record label ROCK album in '91. Plenty of great music in many other genres.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2014 2:08 AM

2:08pm Blood Sugar Sex Magik was a ROCK :) album in every sense of the word.

That album to this day is the ultimate long-play start the party record (I think 75+ minutes.) RHCP went all out with that one.

I love Enter Sandman - it was a great song to kick off Metallica's self-titled - but I feel it went downhill from there. Not bad, just none of the songs after ES measured up to it. BSSM only got better as it went along. Also I feel it's too slick. BSSM had a concert feel to it.

You can't say Rick Rubin didn't do a better production job on BSSM than Ross Robinson did on Metallica's S/T, if you're being honest.

Posted by D | June 6, 2014 3:03 AM

RHCP are an embarrassment to rock music

Keidis is a little punk ass bitch

Metallica is more a living cartoon strip

You want to talk melodic metal innovators, let's talk about Kyuss or early Baroness

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2014 9:39 AM

RHCP are an embarrassment to rock music? Silly statement. And I'm not even really much of a fan.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2014 4:06 AM

9:39am How is Kiedis "a little punk ass bitch"? You sound angry enough at him like you and he got into it, please tell us! I could see it - who knows?

Just because I like a band doesn't mean I think they're cool people e.g. Cro-Mags. 'Love their music, but John is one of the biggest dicks out there.

Agreed on Metallica.

To me Judas Priest are THE melodic metal innovators as NO ONE sounded like them. People who don't listen to metal at all know at least one JP song mostly "You've Got Another Thing Coming".
