Jimmy and friends (as previously posted)
Jimmy ScotT
Jimmy Scott

Just heard the sad, sad news that legend Jimmy Scott has passed away, but at 88 years the influential singer with the special, special voice lived a long life and will be remembered forever. Reuters reports:

Jimmy Scott, a jazz singer whose soulful, androgynous voice won him the admiration of the likes of Ray Charles and Lou Reed before he found a wider audience later in life, has died at age 88, his wife said on Saturday.

Scott died in his sleep at home in Las Vegas on Thursday as a result of cardiac arrest following a period of illness, his wife, Jeannie Scott, said in a telephone interview.

Scott became known as a "singer's singer" who was revered by music figures such as Reed, Quincy Jones and Madonna for rendering standards from the American songbook in his distinctive high register.

His unusual voice was a result of being born with a rare genetic condition called Kallmann syndrome, which meant he never passed through puberty.

Rest in Peace, Jimmy, and say hi to Lou!

Some videos, including the trailer for a documentary on him, below...

Maybe if there wasn't such concern on what's being linked to TMZ and the latest on Beyonce & Co., we would have heard about this on BV four days ago when he passed.

"... which meant he never passed through puberty"

So he lived to 88 never having passed through puberty ... take heart, hipsters, at least you will live a long time.

(Unfortunately most hipsters will never read this post, in that the great Jimmy Scott never played DBA or Glasslands)

Between this and the poorly written Ornette Tribute review, it seems painfully clear nobody at BV has spent any time delving into the building blocks of one of the true, original art forms that has come out of this country.

If it ain't on Bedford, it's ain't worth paying attention to.

Rock on.

9:33 just got into the Port Authority on the 9:30 bus from Indianapolis, where jazz is appreciated as it should be

Right. Cause Patti Smith, Flea and Lou Reed were never involved with anything outside of jazz, right? Right.

Friend, I think mom is calling. Head upstairs and go eat your microwave dinner.

9:52 has been building strawmen for so long he has in fact lost his ability to use fucking logic to make a point. Either that or it's his insistance to stress style over substance, in the form of spelling a grammar over content. Or he just can't figure out that an X chromosome makes you male, regardless of what his LGBT legal fund propaganda tells him.

Just smh

And, your smh tends to be ignorant and homophobic. Go you.

All these heavy hitters just LOVED this man, yet he didn't get his due until near the end of his life? Give me a break. Fuck all these so called heavy hitting adorers of Jimmy's music. If you cared, you would have been a part of his tapestry. But you weren't there when it mattered. Your claws only started digging into his coattails when it was basically too late. Fake adoration by millionaires. Gotta love it.

Who are the women next to Laurie Anderson?

Posted by Anonymous | June 17, 2014 2:28 AM

Chill out, 11:45. Lou Reed worked with and toured with Jimmy over 20 years ago.

Note: He was also featured in the final episode of Twin Peaks.

Patti: Keep Laurie and Zorn as far away from you as possible.
