Warpaint @ Prospect Park - 6/26/14
Warpaint
Yellowbirds

Warpaint put out their second album at the beginning of this year, and after having supported it in NYC with an intimate Union Pool show and a much larger Webster Hall show, the LA band returned last night for an even larger (and free) Celebrate Brooklyn show in Prospect Park. The venue filled out pretty well, though it wasn't hard to get into or anything, unlike the Janelle Monae show earlier this month.

The band were in great form, going through their many sounds that included haunting folk, psychedelia, dream pop, and shinier/dancier pop, all while being an adept and big-sounding band that had no problem projecting to the back of the big outdoor venue. Vocal harmonies were spot on too. They were doing some complex stuff that came across more last night than on record, and I don't think they hit a wrong note.

Yellowbirds opened the show. More pictures of both bands below...

The pics are better than the show

The girl in the crowd with green hair looks really annoying. When is the Hot Topic alterna-teen hair trend going to end?

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 11:16 AM

Green hair girl looks like she just emerged from the sea. So pale.

Was a great show, instacrush on the whole band 😍

I'd like to Terry Richardson them.

I don't get Warpaint. I think they're a bad band but people seem to like them.

Posted by McFarts | June 27, 2014 11:27 AM

I really like the idea of a band of girls kicking butt and taking names. I like that they sincerely seemed to be having fun.

But

The music ... it was just so, empty. I stayed for 45 minutes of their set and not one song had hooks enough to grab my attention. I really wanted to like them, I really did, but I left feeling like I had wasted a Thursday night. I am not happy to write this.

Go away, you are done. Have some self respect, man!

This was better than Webster hall show! Such a fantastic band:)

Will they keep the GA setup for the St. Vincent show? I would hope so, but I'm assuming all the frumpy donor types will show up for the last Celebrate Brooklyn event.

God such uninspiring merchandise.

Aren't you hipsters supposed to be artists? Or know some fucking artists.

Black shirts only? What is this 1995?

Bunch of deck sucking dicks

Great photos, Amanda!

Also OMG the front row girl with glasses that's in two of the crowd shots.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 11:43 AM

It was a beautiful evening! Great weather, really nice crowd and Warpaint was fantastic as always. So cool to watch them grow as a band. I hope they come back soon.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 11:43 AM

What's a frumpy donor?

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 11:44 AM

Don't wanna be " that guy " but if you don't like the music then you just don't get it

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 11:49 AM

"if you don't like the music then you just don't get it"

What the fuck does that even mean? Engrish, do you 'peaka it?

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 11:53 AM

If you don't get that then you don't get it

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 11:56 AM

I walked away thinking they are a really good studio band but they need a different production approach for a live venue, especially an outdoor venue. It felt like their spacey reverb-y vocals didn't translate well in the outdoor setting. Maybe it was the mix, or maybe they need to change up their production to accommodate a stage/sound system because I thought the vocals were muddled and without any punch.

I liked the show and really like this band and want them to succeed. I was glad they came to Prospect Park because I missed them at Webster Hall in April.

So many babes (and parents with kids) at this show

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 12:01 PM

@11:29 and @12:00, same comments applied for the Dum Dum girls...

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 12:45 PM

was Todd Netter just LOSING HIS DAMN MIND?

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 12:47 PM

Thanks 11:56 for clearing that up. Your mom, she didn't really give you good nourishment when you were young, right?

I believe that I saw the Matrix movies come to life last night. No, not the Neo/Morpheus side, I mean those poor sods that were having their energy harvested from them, thinking that life was just so grand.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 1:54 PM

Didn't they do a commercial for Tide?

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 1:55 PM

Did the rider specify "ONLY BLUE LIGHTS" on stage?

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 2:01 PM

I really wanted to be blown away last night .. didn't happen.

I feel like they use reverb/modulation-chorus effects/ and delays as a "cover up" rather than enhancing the songs.

That said, I did see "that spark" that makes great bands great ...it just didn't seem like they've realized their full potential yet (or if they ever will) ...

I think they really need to drop the over processed vocals, wear their shortcomings on their sleeves like a badge of honor and simply rip shows.

It may or may not ever happen.

^or do topless stuff

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 2:37 PM

you guys all suck

that was a great show

^ Where "great" is defined as soulless and sterile but visually enticing

To say that it was musically great just shows your lack of both experience and taste

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 2:43 PM

GYBE = great

Siouxsie / Banshees = great

The Cure = great

Cocteau Twins = great

Portished = great

Warpaint = not so much

I bought a 'Friends pass' after this lineup was announced and they fucked me. Free shows 'friends seats' are supposed to be in the front but instead every free show I've been you're corralled by the soundboard a half mile away and everyone is 65 years old and talking.

As for Warpaint they were better then the Dum Dum Girls but I guess that's a pretty low bar. They got annoyed no one sang along to their murky, indistinguishable vocals which was funny.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 2:56 PM

Serves you right 2:56 - this is the shittiest lineup in years. Last year's lineup was 100x better than this one, and only a handful of the shows were Friends in the back (most in the front).

1:01 wasn't loved as a child. Boohoo eat a herd of dicks and enroll in kindergarten for basic comprehension skills.

St Vincent promises to be an entertaining show if only for the "white girl with cornrows" aesthetic

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 3:46 PM

^ so that would be "Yes" then, OK. Thanks for clearing that up, 11:56.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 3:46 PM

u guys are all pathetic.
show was great. crowd was great.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 4:01 PM

Show was boring, no 2 ways about it.
Crowd for the most part would enjoy EDM as much if not more.

NO HUMMUS IN THE FOOD AREA!

11:40- If you look carefully at those shirts, the sides of the triangle spell WARPAINT in a weird font. Still not great, but kinda like it.

i like pale girls w cray hair they remind me of

G R I M E S

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 6:46 PM

it was a great summer night out... enjoyed the show and bought a shirt...

CB has had an especially poor lineup so far this year. Apart from getting to see Ornette one last time, the season has been a snoozer.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2014 10:50 PM

where's the hot bassist with the big tits? without that piece of ass showing off her tits, who cares?

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2014 12:06 AM

I think she joined CHVRCHES.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2014 12:23 PM

honestly...I thought/hoped this show was going to be full of gay girls. instead: a lot of people under the influence/with trendy haircuts

maybe my next gf will be at the St Vincent show. that should draw a gay-ish crowd
