What's going on Friday? (Infest, Martyrdoom III, The Young, A$AP Ferg, Crystal Stilts, Del Close Marathon, Latyrx, more)

Infest in Miami in 2013 (more by Kris Alan Carter)
Infest

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Infest, Magrudergrind, Hounds Of Hate, Chain Rank @ The Acheron
Powerviolence pioneers Infest recently reformed after a 22-year hiatus, and now they’re playing their first-ever NYC shows this week. Tonight’s the first and features a killer bill all around. If you’re even thinking about hitting one of these, do it. They’ll be nuts.

Crystal Stilts, Christines, Honey @ Baby’s All Right
Crystal Stilts’ new single “Delirium Tremendous” is the best thing they’ve done in ages, adding a little flower-power to their usually overcast psych. Christines should appeal to shoegaze fans, sounding a little like Swervedriver.

The Stationary Set, Slonk Donkerson, Pampers, Swamp Boots @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar offers weekends of local artisan shopping, gourmet eats, beer and wine, ping pong, black light minigolf and music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight’s a mixed bag of local acts featuring the catchy alt-rock of Slonk Donkerson and the “thug pop” of Pampers. Free.

Obnox, Liquor Store, Hubble, Cyanide Tooth @ Death by Audio
Obnox is one of the many projects of Cleveland punk musician Lamont Thomas, but while he usually drums, for this one he takes the lead and brings elements of soul, R&B, hip hop and more into it too. Solid locals on the bill tonight as well.

Jello Biafra and The Guantanomo School of Medicine, Negative Approach, All Torn Up @ Highline Ballroom
Jello Biafra may not be with the Dead Kennedys anymore, but he’s still making smart/smartass political punk with his current band The Guantanamo School of Medicine. Tonight they’re joined by another group of ’80s-era punks, Negative Approach.

A$AP Ferg, Flatbush Zombies, Bodega Bamz, Po Johnson, DJ Zeke Thomas @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
It’s an excellent lineup of local rap at MHOW tonight with the darkest A$AP Mob member, A$AP Ferg, the druggy Flatbush Zombies, and the hard-edged Bodega Bamz.

Shovels and Rope, Valerie June, Shakey Graves @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Celebrate Brooklyn! gets folky tonight with this free show headlined by South Carolina duo Shovels & Rope. Openers Valerie June and Shakey Graves are notable in their own right, making this a lovely Friday option under the stars.

Dave Chappelle @ Radio City Music Hall
Comedian Dave Chappelle is back in a big way, doing a whopping nine 10 nights at Radio City Music Hall. He’s had musical guests the last few nights but tonight he’s listed solo. Kanye did turn up unannounced last week, so you never know…

White Hinterland, Heavenly Beat, The Henry Millers @ Rough Trade
White Hinterland, aka Casey Dienel, makes pop with dash of R&B as can be heard on her new album, Baby. Opening are Heavenly Beat whose most recent album, Provenance, was a breezy treat (though they’ve never been able to quite translate it to a live show, not yet at least).

Mournful Congregation, Imprecation, Bergime Exemlous, Holocaustum, Geryon @ Saint Vitus
Martyrdoom III, the third annual five-day metal festival at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus, begins today with Australian funeral doom masters Mournful Congregation headlining.

Frankie Cosmos, Painted Zeros, Bethlehem Steel, T-Rextasy @ Shea Stadium
NYC singer/songwriter Frankie Cosmos makes a solid mix of Beat Happening-style twee and Moldy Peaches-style anti-folk on this year’s Zentropy.

Tonstartssbandht, Blues Control, PC Worship @ Silent Barn
Brooklyn-via-Florida-by-way-of-Montreal duo Tonstartssbandht just released their new double album, Overseas, via Arbutus (aka Grimes’ label) and tonight’s the record release show.

Drive-By Truckers, The Hold Steady @ Stone Pony
The Hold Steady and Drive-By Truckers both recently released new albums, and both will be on their own tours this summer. Their paths intersect for two co-headlining NY-area shows, this being the first.

Endless Boogie, The Young, VBA @ Union Pool
Most notably this is the pre-release show for The Young’s new long player, Chrome Cactus, which is a punked up psychedelic ripper that drops this August. They’ll be joined by the groovy Endless Boogie and hard rocking psych trio VBA.

Del Close Marathon
It’s Upright Citizens Brigade’s annual three-day fest with over 420 comedy performances. A $30 wristband gets you into as many as you can muster.

Latyrx (Lateef + Lyrics Born), Fort Knox Five @ Brooklyn Bowl
Veteran alt-rap duo Latyrx released their long-awaited followup to their 1997 debut last year and now they’re playing shows in support of it.

Pinata Protest, Kuenta i Tambu, Helado Negro, SLV @ South Street Seaport
The free River to River festival continues today with a Latin American/Caribbean showcase.
