Death Grips have a new double album, the powers that b, on the way and were scheduled to tour with Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails as well as play festivals such as Pitchfork Fest, FYF Fest and FFF Fest this summer. A band known for canceling shows a lot, they've gone and canceled all upcoming shows because... they've broken up. At least that's what they say (this could be another of their stunts). The band posted the above picture to their Facebook that says:

we are now at our best and so Death Grips is over. we have officially stopped. all currently scheduled live dates are canceled. our upcoming double album "the powers that b" will still be delivered worldwide later this year via Harvest/Third Worlds Records. Death Grips was and always has been a conceptual art exhibition anchored by sound and vision. above and beyond a "band". to our truest fans, please stay legend.
Stay tuned for the second half of their new album, titled jenny death. The first half, niggas on the moon (which features Bjork), is out now.

UPDATE: Fun Fun Fun Fest responds

UPDATE TWO: Trent Reznor responds

I wonder if this is an act....

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:01 PM

Has anyone actually ever seen them perform live? Was it all an elaborate ruse?

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:02 PM

Didn't they always canceled all of their shows anyway?
They're like the essence of slackgaze.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:05 PM

They are way too late for the great rocknroll swindle. Crackers on the moon.

@6:02. I saw them at the NPR Showcase for CMJ 2012 and it was pretty horrible. The synth player wasn't present, therefore it was MC Ride screaming and Zach Hill drumming over a backing track.

AT LEAST, WE STILL HAVE INSANE CLOWN POSSE.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:08 PM

It was obvious they would never tour. Would love to see the liability insurance on that one. Would love it even more if there were none.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:10 PM

how death grips of them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:13 PM

...well whats the latest with the wu tang clan?

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:16 PM

@6:07 was there and I could agree, Zach Hill was amazing though. I guess the only full line up shows really in NY were in 2011 when they played Rock Beach when Jelly was still trying to put events together and Santos.

There's nothing more hardcore than announcing a breakup on Facebook.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 6:26 PM

Damn, I would not want to be near Trent Reznor when this news broke.

Terrific news. Now Zach Hill can go and make some new music that ISN'T rap.

Posted by bibber | July 2, 2014 9:24 PM

This band thinks it's Refused or something. They should spend less time writing on napkins & more time taking out the notebooks..

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2014 9:25 PM

We will always have Rock Beach.

But more importantly, we will always have the wife/kids combo meme, which, even in the least talented of hands, is still more entertaining than Death Grips' music.

above and beyond a band

"People keep blaming the turnouts on the bands. We stand behind our booking and feel we deserve some respect for our booking history. Give us the PS1 MOMA or the waterfront venue, we'll see how much the booking matters when hoards of euro-trash and weekend warriors fill up the space. One of the coolest things about New York is that you see bands before your friends do in Po-Dunk, Iowa. You can then send them some message online being like, "You have got to check out Death Grips." Fast forward 6 months from now and you get a call from your old drunk friend and they are like, "Death Grips" is the shit!" And your like, "No shit, I told you that six months ago. Have fun in loser-ville with the wife/kid combo.""

Posted by Anonymous | July 3, 2014 2:26 PM

I almost miss Jelly. The shows they booked were such trainwrecks that it was fascinating to watch.

Thank you, 2:26. All time classic.

Death Grips trolled all the sheep. A brilliant reminder folks - you don't (instantly) always get what you want.
