More vanishing New York. This time iconic, unironic midtown NYC dive bar Subway Inn. Via their Facebook:

Subway Inn Patrons,

As you might know, Subway Inn was established in 1937, and has been proudly serving customers since.

We are sad to inform you that Subway Inn will be closed for business on or about the 15th of August. That's not to say we aren't opening another location. Subway Inn WILL relocate.

Follow Us for further details.

-SUBWAY INN

As it says, the neon goes dark sometime next month.

Bars open and close all the time. Stop being so nostalgic over a room where rummies go to become drunken fools. It's just a fucking bar, walk down the street and find another one.

New York sure cries about a lot of bullshit.

Not in Brooklyn. No live music. Not on the radar of any demographic you are trying to reach.

So, why?

The end of 20th century New York, brought to you by 7up.

The rent is too DAMN HIGH!

He teaches us that the economics of selling one $10.00 juice to one young yuppie is more valuable than selling $25.00 of cocktails to one retired city employee, which makes extraordinary rent increases necessary.

"Daddy's got a new juice franchise he's going to put there, so suck it Rummy. VICTORY."

This bar deserved to close. Way too many underage drinkers on a daily basis. Shame on them!

ok guys. real business proposal. been floating this with a buddy for awhile.

it's a wine bar. but not just any wine bar. a wine bar that serves wines picked from sonoma / napa valley. we'll call it "the sonoma" and put it somewhere in brooklyn. probably in park slope. and it'll have a big backyard, wifi, artificial grass, and croquet.

do you think that'd work?

New location is 279 Grand -- the former maracuja space.
Manhattan cheeseballs have long taken over bk.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2014 8:44 PM

Do I dare to dream that a frozen yogurt place will open in that location?

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2014 9:11 PM

It would be great if it was a bank branch. We need more bank branches in midtown.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2014 10:21 PM

Everyone commenting about the current state of Manhattan moved here 5 years ago to go to NYU.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2014 10:16 AM

Not a single hardcore show there in all that time, eff 'em.

I was once railroaded into going to this bar. It ain't an a track tive place. It is however a token NYC icon.

6:11: It's more like it was one of those shitty dive bars that smelled like a ton of rum was spilled on the wood bartop over the years and they never bothered to clean any of it. There's a number of places like that, that I also wish would close down permanently too.

Spike Lee is a token NYC icon

The word "rummy" has been overused on this site lately. This isn't the 20's, and that was never really considered an insult in this country unless you were a nasty old hag rallying for temperance. Also, buffalo wings smell great. Everybody shut up.

^this winner hangs out at dive bears. lol
