Number of shows since they last played [Saturday] night's biggest break-out, "My Sweet One": 24. It hasn't been heard live since last October in Virginia.

Number of songs in the encore: 3.

Amount of people who explained how rare it is for the band to play that many songs in the encore: Equal to the number of people I sustained eye contact with on my way off Randall's Island. 40?

Total number of songs played over entire weekend: 57

Number of those that were covers: 3. This has been a tour light on covers.

Number of total songs off [new album] Fuego played over 3 nights: 9 of 10. (They didn't play "Wombat.")

Longest jam of the entire weekend: A 27-minute rendition of "Chalk Dust Torture" on the third night. [Rolling Stone]

Phish brought their current tour back to NYC over the weekend for a three-night run (July 11-13) on Randall's Island (where Governors Ball happened and where Electric Zoo happens soon), their first time playing there. Among the three covers mentioned in Rolling Stone's by-the-numbers review above were TV on the Radio's "Golden Age" and The Velvet Underground's "Rock & Roll." Did you go to any of the nights? Did you go to all three? If you can remember, you weren't there, amirite?

More pictures of the weekend and setlists from all 3 nights, below...

Im so fucking glad the stench of Phish will be wiped out on Wednesday when QOTSA comes to town.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:20 AM

Does anyone know where I can see really oddly colored, unpleasant to look at, high contrast photos of a nostalgia act?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:23 AM

More pics of merch please.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:23 AM

Yes, 9:20. Your big doofy mainstream rock band will totally get rid of those hippies. You said it, man! Radio rock rules!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:26 AM

"Im so fucking glad the stench of Phish will be wiped out on Wednesday when QOTSA comes to town."

Yeah, I can't wait for a band that isn't just for people on drugs.

Oh wait.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:26 AM

Music for mongoloids.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:29 AM

@9:26

Hey Rip Van Winkle it's 2014 not 2001.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:30 AM

These pictures are pretty terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:32 AM

Holy overuse of contrast Batman!

Posted by Wilson | July 15, 2014 9:34 AM

their merch booth looks kinda like the vinyl section at the new Gowanus Whole Foods!

Posted by anon | July 15, 2014 9:34 AM

LOL @ QOTSA as some kind of "antidote" for anything

the riffiest bro-rock band in the country isn't gonna bring any kind of integrity back...

sad

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:35 AM

Brooklyn Vegan covering the Phish show...interesting...just very interesting that's all (puke).

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:35 AM

Hey maybe if you ate meat those pics wouldn't have turned out so badly.

Posted by Suzy Greenberg | July 15, 2014 9:36 AM

bro-rock? Ahhhhhhhhhh ok. That makes sense

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:37 AM

chad-rock better for ya?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:39 AM

3 days of hippies and all the stank and arrogance that goes along with it. Never mind the masturbatory over run self indulgenced solos coming for well over the hill pediphiles. LIFE IN HELL !!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:41 AM

At the very least QOTSA have made 2-3 classic rock albums. Self Titled - Rated R - Songs For The Deaf

Phish have yet to even make ONE worthy song in the 20+ years they've been playing. Not even one good song.

Hell every year they do shows where they cover other bands' classic albums.

Embarrassing

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:42 AM

/\ Calm down brah, this was Phish NOT the Grateful Dead.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:42 AM

Phish is the worst fucking band in the world. Fuck every single thing about them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:43 AM

Every year? They have covered albums in 94,95,96,98,2009,2010 that's less than 10 cover albums in 31 years? Melt harder chad.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:46 AM

Lol @ merch. The Phish corporation. What dweebs buy that shit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:47 AM

These QOTSA fans sound like a buncha betas.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:47 AM

Are indie scene hipsters just pissed Phish is the most successful indie band ever and that none of their favorite bands could ever last as long as them?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:51 AM

Not being snarky....but that's the BV review? Irrelevant statistics and one paragraph?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:53 AM

@9:43 Do you have something against cute girls eating tons of Molly and having fun? Or maybe it's the fact people can wear lose clothing and not suck at being a scenester-chad like you?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:53 AM

QOTSA and Phish BOTH suck.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:53 AM

"Hey Phil, what classic album are we gonna cover this year dudeeeee"

"I don't man, anything we can take a nice hour long break in between" ( to really kill the vibe)

"Lets do Grimes this year!"

"Call the tour manager, get those $150 tickets pre-sale tickets ready"

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 9:54 AM

I like it all. I was at all three nights of phish and will also be at qotsa.

Posted by It's not a competition | July 15, 2014 9:55 AM

Cute girls! HAHA Chubby girls with tie dye shirts aren't exactly my type.

You fucken idiots aren't getting molly anymore. You're getting a whole bunch of derivatives and additives that drug dealers are getting you to pay twice as much for.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:02 AM

Don't shit on it just because it's not your thing. You all sound bitter. Remember kids, bitterness is amplified self-pity.

Posted by Serious jujar | July 15, 2014 10:04 AM

9:46, 94 to 98, that lapse of creativity must be when the bass player was to busy taking pics of nacked little girls (twisted fuck).

9:51 hippys have no self thought process. They'll believe what ever some stinky self proclaimed guru brainwashed them into buying into. Phish SUCKS. It not hard to be success full for people who are so out of thier minds the can't tell on song from the next. HIPSTERS YOU SUCK IT. So don't mistake me for these clowns.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:04 AM

So then you are just mad your a hipster chad beta that gets RC'd at shitty "indie" shows. Got it ;)

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:05 AM

I thought BV doesn't cover that band ??

Posted by ME | July 15, 2014 10:15 AM

"Mongoloid" - very current term, guy; you've really got the preferred nomenclature there - with two advanced degrees here.

Phish scares those afraid of losing their edge - most of whom are in the first place driven to put up a front to paper over white-bread suburban origins - in the same way out/proud homosexuality or just about any other expression of difference scares right-wingers: it upsets them that others feel much freer to depart from social norms to which they feel bound.

Name another concert audience that dances with such uninhabited abandon. Just one. Don't talk to me about pits and such - that isn't dancing, it's just ritualized aggression conforming to prevailing gender norms (in most cases they're overwhelmingly male). And don't talk about LCD e.g. - you've obviously never been to a Phish concert (and don't understand how sizable is audience crossover between the acts). But please do bring up "bad" dancing as if you aren't proving my point.

It's not just the audience, of course. Name another band in the pop idiom, especially one with a mass audience, with the same degree of musical freedom, on-stage especially. Just one. Who improvises to such a degree? Who plays a completely different setlist every night? Who writes with such harmonic complexity? Most of the purportedly "experimental" or "free" music that comes out of the "indie" sphere (and Phish has always been very much an "independent" band) - a not insignificant quantity of which is made by people who admire Phish - is comparatively inert, perhaps because it lacks the freedom that comes with a bigger and in some sense more open-minded audience.

Not that I think complicated is better - I don't; I'm all for three chords and the truth - and I'm not going to even try to defend Phish as good conventional songwriters - with few exceptions, they aren't - but a lot of your inside-the-box punk(/folk/blues) strictures express a failure of capacity as much as or more than an expression of an aesthetic - the technological primitive thing is getting pretty narcissism-of-small-differences not to mention old 60-80 years down the road - and they are reflective of some of the same norms that bind or not the respective audiences, to which Phish has a more symbiotic relationship than virtually any other comparable act.

It's not just the sometimes-compositional writing that's challenging to those uncomfortable with or insufficiently educated to appreciate the envelope edges. Phish music also takes more chances simultaneously on beauty, fun, and humor, including of the self-deprecating variety - most who dismiss them fail to understand that the band has been intentionally taking the piss out of (but also simultaneously celebrating; some of you do the same thing, but you do it with "irony" because you're scared of your shadows) the 70s-early 80s arena rock conventions from which it was birthed at least since it gained its own arena status two decades ago - than someone constantly checking their look and social position is going to be comfortable with.

But back to your hummus, mehs.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:18 AM

/\ Gets it

Posted by Trey | July 15, 2014 10:25 AM

Why are people fighting over Phish and hipster scenesters when clearly those photos are what's wrong with this whole thing. Yuck...were those taken with an iPhone? Is that some kind of "vegan" thing...like that's how vegans see things with their poor nutrition and pale skin.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:28 AM

Anyone wanna guess how many of these know it all hipsters listen to bands that LOVE Phish and GD? Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Animal Collective all immediately come to mind...hell even Carrie Brownstein has found an appreciation. WENT GIN FTMFW!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:34 AM

"Mongoloid" again

Are there dumbass, embarrassing Phish fans? Undifferentiating suburbanites? People stuck in the '90s or earlier? Teens/collegiates looking for a party? Fake hippies? Clueless mooks? People with no self-awareness at all? Absolutely; all of the above.

There are also dumbass, embarrassing fans of similar and different varieties including hilarious herd mentality hipsters - probably including some of you reading this comment - of just about any other band with a comparably-sized audience you can possibly think of, including all of your headliner-level "indie" acts.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:35 AM

Not enough bro pix. Definitely need more bro pix, bro.

Posted by bro | July 15, 2014 10:40 AM

Lets start a Kickstarter?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:43 AM

10:18 for all ranting you got it wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 10:52 AM

10:52, you have made a well-defended argument composed with impeccable grammar. I resign.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:01 AM

So from what I can tell, this comment page is stuck on hippy bullshit or hipster doushbag boreing that only they think interesting. I'm sure most of you never hit a stage or wrote anything but childish incoherent comments that make sense to you and your other 14 year old friend.

Try steping up and look to the future. We welcome you Bro.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:10 AM

@11:10

Phil?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:15 AM

No, I hate pederass supporters & one step hippies. I hate scarf wearing hippters with gender confusion. I hate metal geaks who take themselves why to seriously. But, most of all I hate critics that have never done anything but criticize. For a group of so called progressive, I've met more "Duck Dynisty" that have more of an open mind then MOST of you cats.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:23 AM

Now that their parents are dead, these sad hippies don't hurt anyone so lay the fuck off.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:35 AM

NO FUCK YOU!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:36 AM

Hi 11:23 - I've done a few more things than criticize, so is it ok if I say that you're the biggest douche on this thread? Cool.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:49 AM

9:51 nailed it.

Phish has done "indie" better than anyone has over 30 years now.

And they are still playing at an incredible level that your favorite hipster band could only dream of.

And they melt you all so hard it's hilarious.

The start of set II, 3rd night (CDT>light>Tweezer) was a better hour of live music than most of you will ever get to witness this year.

You favorite band can't cut it.... Sorry.

Phish rules.

Posted by Colonel Forbin | July 15, 2014 11:51 AM

@9:51

When you do something for 30 years you should probably be good at it. You know that 10,000 hours rule.....

They clearly haven't spent 30 years on song writing though.

Grimes could be as good as Phish in 30 years too.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 11:56 AM

this thread was: tl;dr

have the hippies started talking about 'jazz chop' yet?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 12:01 PM

K. Thx.

11:49 WHAT? BACK THAT UP. YOUTUBE VIDEOS DON'T COUNT. I love watching fucktards come undone. What's next? You are entertaining the hell out of me. Get a life, you take this shit to seriously. I'm here to watch the weak become unraveled & you bought into it. I'm done playing, although I'd love to hear your record, prove me wrong, I'm always up to learn something new.

Randall's Island was the perfect venue for these shows! I had a great time.

Posted by Doc | July 15, 2014 12:19 PM

12:17 yup.

I think I'll take the QOTSA fan's BW3 stank, over Phish fan's patchouli stank.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 12:20 PM

You people make me thankful that I eat meat. It's hard for people to enjoy things they don't understand. Try Phish once, and you'll have a newfound respect. If you don't like it, then leave it alone and move on. There's room for everyone...

Posted by Dave | July 15, 2014 12:22 PM

Is there anything more douchey than like 4th wave blue eyed jazz?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 12:25 PM

Mike Gordon touches little children's private parts. I got to watch one time. It was exciting.

Posted by Visorkid | July 15, 2014 12:27 PM

@11:56 get back to us in what...24-25 years and we'll see.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 12:33 PM

What?!?!?! A vegan that can't handle the truth? Next you'll tell me that BV thinks that organic vegetables grown in the blood and bone meal of factory farmed animals are vegan.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 12:35 PM

@11:30 what was censored?

Posted by isbvcensoring? | July 15, 2014 12:37 PM

@12:05 Ben & Jerry's is not vegan.

Please limit all comments to vegan only related bitching.

Vegans are pussies. I am going to eat you, because I can.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 12:50 PM

To everyone who hates phish and the scene: We still get the best drugs (LOL we don't get molly, hang on lot breh), the best improv, the most fun, and the most positive atmosphere. Most people who like phish are 20-30 somethings who like to hang out and hear good music, and some like to do good drugs. If you don't like it, thats fine. Have fun being sad and listening to radiohead, casuals

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 12:56 PM

^^^^^ best drugs fo sho

we will leave the mahldog for the grimes fans

Posted by C | July 15, 2014 1:04 PM

Ha it's the Grimes fans eating fistfuls of RCs and completely unaware it was the Dead/ Phish culture that has been calling it Molly since what late 80s-early 90s?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 1:10 PM

who the fuck is phil? phil lesh? he rules but he isn't in this band

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 1:17 PM

Grimes has transcended the need for chemical alteration.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 1:23 PM

Kudos BV for really pushing the journalistic envelope with this well thought out and insightful article. I assume everyone is busy clearing some shelf space because I imagine at least a few The Pulitzer Prizes coming their way.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 1:28 PM

Wait. This "article" is just a copy pasta from Rolling Stone w some shitty cell phone pics over saturated to look "cool".

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 1:35 PM

In summer 2000 I saw 6 straight east coast shows with my old pal Noah Lennox. Haven't seen the band since but it was a great fucking time. Noah went on to do all types of "indie" awesomness and still loves GD and Phish. I bet that makes some here really confused and angry. Hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 1:38 PM

will you chads please leave me the fuck out of this?

Posted by lol | July 15, 2014 2:37 PM

I LOL @ all the Phish hate on here. You people are swo clueless about music, or culture. Phish is off the hook, and the majority of your children agree with me on this. You old fools need to get out of the way or join in.

"Wait. This "article" is just a copy pasta from Rolling Stone w some shitty cell phone pics over saturated to look "cool""

haha I didn't see at first that they just lifted the stats from Rolling Stone.

A truly pathetic "review". I'd be ashamed of something like this.

Ive been to 100's of shows over the past 15-20 years. Hardcore, Rock, "indie", EDM, metal, folk, jazz, you name it. A solid phish show is better than 95% of them. Thats just a fact-the hate on here is hilarious. Get over it, phish melts music fans faces

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 4:13 PM

29 yr old Irish guy who works on Wall street-if that helps. Great response btw, go put your beats on and rock out to Zola jesus while you syh.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 4:16 PM

lol @ 4:11. How about this. Any show that doesn't involve me sitting in a field in the July sun w/ a bunch of hippie/nerds, to watch a ginger nerd play shitty Jazz fusion, with inane lyrics, branding everything in sight, as to maximize profits of Phish®?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 4:20 PM

Who knew Grateful Dead nostalgia was such a lucrative business?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 4:22 PM

lol @ 4:16. A white guy stockbroker huh? Way to defy the stereotype. Did you get into phish at prep school?

Sick cop out- the guy who still uses "lol" @ 4:16. No mention of any bands as usual i see-another mindless clown on here once again...

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 4:25 PM

PHISH are just all sorts of awful. I went to Plattsburgh State and saw them at the Clifford Ball. Just incessant jamming ripped off from Zappa. Just a boring, depressing scene now. They have a handful of decent songs but just plain suck now. Any defenders of their "scene" and "music" are either tone deaf, unemployed, or both.

Posted by B | July 15, 2014 4:29 PM

4:25 I could list 100s of bands. That's how bad I think Phish are. The absolutely retarded lyrics alone are a deal breaker.

RIP Jerry, I don't blame you for this.

Uninformed noobs have been hating on Phish for 30 years, it's ok. It doesn't change the fact that Phish is the most successful indie rock band of our time. You don't like it? Tough shit. Carry on with your patchouli jokes and assorted ego-stroking putdowns. MR4M2D

Phish isn't for everyone, but it's definitely for me. Thanks for the weird pictures.

Terrible band. Terrible clueless fans. Terrible venue. Terrible photos

Pretty much sums up this thread

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 5:16 PM

@4:22 you should ask that to that shit show Bob Weir.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 5:26 PM

@3:02 are you really asking for wooks to suck you dick? I don't think you know how easily that could be arranged...see you on tour sweet boy!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 5:28 PM

PHISH back in their heyday were for wannabe deadhead poseurs with too much money to buy drugs. Now it's for burnt out losers who never mentally graduated from college.

Why is BV even wasting his time on this band. Is he geigh for Trey? Did he hear about Vegan Fish Tacos on lot? Did he eat a bunch of methylone and NBOME and think he was getting the firemost?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 5:31 PM

@5:58 you CLEARLY do not understand that ALL 1.0 vets married dimes and make over 100K a year.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 5:32 PM

Opps @5:28 sorry my 10 wife was giving me head as I sip Dom.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 5:33 PM

Hipsters arguing with wooks. I just flipped a coin, and somehow you both lost...at life. Keep up the good work, dickheads.

/\ Haha which beta PT'er is this?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 5:39 PM

Come on, everyone, please stop arguing. Everyone hear knows the truth and the truth is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

That is, of course, when it comes to Phish.

Phish fans are pedophilia supporting retards with no imagination.
Non-Phish fans are not.

Boo yah

Based on the number of comments, BV would be better off being a Phish blogger. Only time anyone cares to read his blog it seems.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2014 6:11 PM

Phish was a good idea once Jerry & Co. were too old and liver-damaged to keep going, and Long Island dorks who missed out on the Dead needed a place to play hacky sack while off lacrosse season. My guess is that those same several thousand mongoloids (and their sad offspring, it seems) who go to each and every show. Have fun, guys.

12:37 my post went under review & they could not handle it. BV = Censorship = Furture Of Free Speech.

White people. Hippies.

Isn't it child abuse to bring a kid to a Phish gig?
