The Drums @ Novotel Hotel 7/16/2014

"From here on out begins the new chapter of the Drums," singer Jonny Pierce told a small but devoted crowd packed awkwardly onto the rooftop of Manhattan's Novotel for the Brooklyn-via-Florida duo's first show in years. He and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Graham then left behind the frothy bounce of 2010's "Portamento" and launched into the dark, reverbed twangs and theremin wails of "Magic Mountain," the first single off the Drums' forthcoming third album, "Encyclopedia."

"Our new record sounds just like that," Pierce laughed, illuminated by red stage lights and the bright billboards of Times Square behind him, featuring Pitbull endorsing Hennessy and Conan O'Brien in "Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda." "It's a rude awakening." - [Billboard]

The Drums previewed their new album Encyclopedia on Wednesday night (7/16) on the roof of Times Square's Novotel. A lot of people showed up for the free show, with the line wrapping around the block. Pictures from the show -- and its fairly spectacular backdrop -- are in this post.

The Drums will be back in NYC for two shows, Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 16 and Bowery Ballroom on September 20, as part of their fall tour. Tickets for those NYC shows go on sale at noon today (7/18). Encyclopedia will be out September 23. Check out cover art and tracklist, along with more photos from Wednesday night's rooftop show, below...

Call me crazy, but I don't think this music merits playing on top of a rooftop. I'm thinking more like something that has a little more atmosphere, ya know.

The drums are tight. They snared some good musicians. They stick to good songwriting. I would bass this on the few times I have seen them live. They triangles many bands don't. I have no tympani if you miss their next show. So pedal your way to a show near you!

You know you've really sold out when you're playing the rooftop of a times-square hotel.

Sorry dude, that's pretty corny.

@anon 11:29

You're being very generous, BV didn't make it this far.

You don't see Phish pulling desperate stunts like this, even to promote their new album FUEGO in stores now.

that doesn't look like a fire hazard at all

I was beat after the show.

Why does it seem like everyone one this site hates everything on this site?

That show was awesome and it was a free promotion through the times square arts alliance (which is a thing apparently).

y'all haters can go back to the suburbs where most of you are originally from.

12:17, I don't have everything on the site. I only hate when they post about HAIM and Sky Ferreira and Blood Orange, but they act like hypocrites and diss other pop music acts. But that's a whole other topic for discussion that has nothing to do with The Drums.

From the looks of that setlist, it appears they played all five of their songs, plus a cover.

12:17 - My guess is that 90% of those who post comments on BV are boys under 20 years of age who lack maturity, empathy and range of music appreciation. I cannot imagine that any adult or true fan of music would waste time trolling a music blog. Unfortunately, the trolls are all we get. I'm sure there are plenty of music lovers who read BV regularly but avoid the comments.
