After touring the West Coast with Cloud Nothings, UK trio The Wytches played their first NYC shows last week, playing Mercury Lounge on Thursday (7/25) and Glasslands on Friday with Montreal’s HEAT and local duo Slavve. Photos from the Glasslands show are in this post. I swung by Mercury Lounge after Teenage Fanclub and was glad I did — their mix of punk, stoner riffs and garage makes for a good live show. Those influences also add up, basically, to early Sub Pop grunge but The Wytches play with the kind of enthusiasm that’s hard to fake. Their forthcoming record, Annabel Dream Reader (out 8/26 on Partisan), does a pretty good job at capturing that energy but do see them live if you get the chance.

I also caught HEAT on Saturday (7/26) at their free matinee show at Rough Trade. Crowd was sparse for their 2 PM set but they sounded good, sporting a variety of post Velvet Underground influences and a detached cool attitude (not a million miles from The Strokes). Original? No, but they do it well. Keep an eye out — they’ll be back for CMJ if not before. Pics from their Glasslands set, plus ones of Slavve and more of The Wytches, below…
