The Clientele @ The Bell House in May (more by Greg Cristman)
The Clientele

Obits @ The Bell House in 2011 (more by Erik Erikson)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

The Clientele, Murals, Olson, Rydholm, Forester @ Baby's All Right
Merge recently reissued The Clientele's genuinely wonderful 2000 album,Suburban Light, as a two-disc special edition, and the lineup of the band that made that record plays tonight.

Obits, Biblical, Sun Ladders @ Union Pool
This week's edition of Union Pool's free "Summer Thunder" series is headlined by Sub Pop's snarling rock band Obits. Bands usually start around 4PM.

Liam Finn, August Wells, Laura Stevenson @ Le Poisson Rouge
On his new album, The Nihilist, Finn played 67 instruments. That actually sounds about right, as anyone who's seen his live shows knows the dude can play anything. And often does!

Trap Them, Coliseum, Incendiary, White Widows Pact @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
It's a good night for heavy music at Brooklyn NIght Bazaar with metallic hardcore faves Trap Them, post-hardcore rippers Coliseum, and local NYHC-inspired crew Incendiary.

The Sheiks, Vulture Shit, Washer, DONE @ Cake Shop
Memphis garage rockers The Sheiks, who you may have seen when they toured with John Wesley Coleman last year, have a pretty good pedigree. Singer Frank McLallen also currently plays bass in Ex Cult, and the band's new 7" was produced by Jack Oblivian.

Mexican Slang, Parlor Walls, Truthers @ Death By Audio
Toronto's Mexican Slang will bring you right back to the '60s with their psychedelic rock that's genuinely trippy.

CYMBALS, Future Punx, Donovan Blanc @ Glasslands
UK band CYMBALS released their new album, The Age Of Fracture, earlier this year and if you're a fan of Hot Chip this might just appeal to you to. This is a good lineup all-around, with nu-wavers Future Punx and Captured Tracks' signee Donovan Blanc.

Bill Nye The Science Guy @ Irving Plaza
A PBS kids TV superstar in the '90s, Bill has seen a resurgence lately (we could use more science in the world) and will be doing three sold-out nights at Irving Plaza, this being the second.

Champagne Jerry @ Joe's Pub
Brooklyn rapper and Ad-Rock collaborator Champagne Jerry continues his monthly Joe's Pub residency.

Robert Hood, Objekt, RROSE, Vatican Shadow, Container, Young Male @ MoMA PS1
As always, the weekly Warm Up lineup is filled with forward-thinking electronic music, this time from minimal techno pioneer Robert Hood, Dominick Fernow's "militant religious industrial" project Vatican Shadow, noisemaker Container, and still more.

Deltron 3030, Nomadic Massive @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Alternative rap supergroup Deltron 3030 -- Del tha Funky Homosapien, Kid Koala and Dan the Automator -- made their long-awaited return in 2013 with a new album and a tour with a full orchestra. They're back for this free Celebrate Brooklyn! show.

Tonstartssbandht, Fiasco, Ski Lodge, Slothrust, Ghost Beach, Dances, Slonk Donkerson, Roses, Honduras, Jangula, Little Racer, Painted Zeros, The Due Diligence, Mannequin Pussy, Heeney, The Gradients, Bueno, Low Fat Getting High, Sofa Club, Big Muff Radio, The Indecent, Mayor Creep, Warcries, Dead Sexy Sheila, Loser Cruiser, Ceramics @ Radio Bushwick (Gigawatts Festival)
The four-day Gigawatts Festival is in full swing with a huge lineup of bands and this all-day event. There's a ton of great bands but we suggest Honduras, Low Fat Getting High, Slothrust, Mannequin Pussy and Ski Lodge in particular.

Ava Luna, Man Forever, Warehouse @ Rough Trade
Brooklyn's funk-punk collective Ava Luna headline this show, but don't miss openers Warehouse who are from Atlanta and make noisy postpunk. In between is Man Forever, aka Oneida drummer Kid Millions.

>Bouncing Souls, The Menzingers, Ted Leo @ Stone Pony
NJ punk heroes The Bouncing Souls turn 25 this year and they're celebrating that anniversary with this show in their hometown tonight. Opening is The Menzingers, who owe a thing or two the Souls, and another beloved punk vet, Ted Leo.

Kind of Like Spitting, Living Room, Caravela, Salvatore Rex @ Suburbia

Kind of Like Spitting spent the 2000s making killer emotional indie rock, and in recent years main man Ben Barnett reactivated the band. They're still not the most active though, tonight's their first NYC show in two years.

Gogol Bordello, Man Man @ The Capitol Theatre
The always-wild gypsy punks Gogol Bordello don't hit NYC on their current tour, but they'll be nearby for three area shows, this being the second. The eccentric Man Man will be a good fit too.

Drowners @ The Surf Lodge
Owing a lot to the early '00s sound of The Strokes and The Libertines, local rock band (and former models) Drowners know their way around a hook and catchy chorus. If you're out in Montauk today, this free show is certainly a good option.

Los Rockwells, Artanker Convoy, Christy & Emily @ Trans-Pecos
Rumbling out of hibernation, jazzy, dubby Artanker Convey spin their web tonight.

Ma Jolie, The Great Apes, The Britnays, Jumpers @ Shea Stadium
Ma Jolie make noodly post-hardcore that hearkens back to bands like Bear vs Shark (whose song "Ma Jolie" may or may not have inspired this band name).

Murphy's Law, Yuppicide, Jenncity @ Rocks Off Concert Cruise
NYC punks Murphy's Law have been at it since the early '80s and there's still never a lack of chances to see them in action.

Murphy's Law the piece of shit band who hasn't put out an album of new material in THIRTEEN YEARS and doesn't play Manhattan anymore, they play overpriced "cruises" around it.

Hey Jimmy remember when Murphy's Law sold out to be the next Red Hot Chili Peppers? Or was it Fishbone? I forgot which one. Oh recorded the sellout record in California where you should've stayed.

*Recorded it with Norwood from Fishbone. Cuz you wanted to be Fishbone.

Posted by D | July 19, 2014 3:20 AM

Murphy's Law must have gang banged your girl friend to be so hateful.

I've said it before and i'll say it again...the Kind Of Like Spitting show is going to be amazing!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2014 10:27 AM

Oh please 7:34am.

I'm just sick of hearing how great this "band" is when they haven't put out a record of new music since the tail end of the second Giuliani adminstration or a good record since the second one released in '89 and even that record was ok at best. The joke was starting to wear thin just a little with that.

Another thing:

What's with all these 1980s NYHC bands existing in 2014 yet only two of them have put out new music this year and in the past four years: Madball and Sheer Terror? The rest just play the oldies. Fuck off. I mean I think MB and ST suck ass but I will give them credit for putting out new music. It took ST four years to do so but they did it.

Sick Of It All? Last record of new material came out in 2010 and it sucked dick.

Agnostic Front? 2011 and it sucked dick.

Murphy's Law? Ridiculously 2001 and it sucked dick.

Cro-Mags? With John Joseph ridiculously 1993. Without him 2000. The only band among the four whose last output of new music was decent.

Hey D...we've heard all of this from you before. Those (very few) who care in the least about this shit already know how you feel on the subject. You sound like a broken record dude.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2014 11:44 AM

Where have you heard ML is great? I've never saw anyone claims so. So the anger is a bit overused here. Plus they do play in nyc sometimes, like in trash bar in billyburg last october.

Posted by ME | July 19, 2014 1:24 PM

it's nice that the gigawatts festival has all the worst bands playing in one place. if only this was every weekend

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2014 2:44 PM

Tonight it's Obits, then everything else. Oh, and fake D can suck my dick.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2014 5:08 PM

California pipes run thru
Beaches suck and so don't you

Posted by Bartedge | July 19, 2014 5:10 PM

Hey 11:44am you're obviously one of them and you know what's a broken record? You going up against me when (you know) you'll lose.

1:24pm there are lots of people who think ML are great because Jimmy G. acts like an 18 year old who just got accepted into a fraternity. I know they play NYC and Trash Bar has been their homebase for years, I said they never play Manhattan anymore - I could amend that to rarely plays Manhattan anymore as I think they played Irving Plaza on some clusterfuck show last year. I should've added they don't play Manhattan anymore cuz no respectable club wants to book them cuz they're not worth their guarantee or the hassle.

A nonexistent poster can suck your dick, ok 5:08pm - nutball.

Well all the cited NYHC bands cited may suck in your opinion, but at least they are out playing shows while you troll BV at 7pm on a Saturday night.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2014 7:17 PM

The Clientele are the epitome of lameass indie crap.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2014 2:28 AM

Fake D bores me

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2014 8:56 AM

'Funny how you say I "troll BV at 7pm on a Saturday night" when you posted on the BV at 7:17pm on a Saturday night. Try YOU'RE the one trolling BV. And I posted at 6:46pm which isn't 7pm. Dumbass. I was in and out all day yesterday and went out last night. And you do know one can post from a mobile device, no? I do that sometimes, it's called 2014.

What NYHC bands played shows/the city last night? Shitty ones if any. I know it wasn't any 1980s NYHC bands so WTFAYTA?

Fake D i.e. you endlessly running your mouth about what doesn't exist bores me.

Pretentious motherfucker spews shit again.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2014 12:58 AM

I put on the movie... The Lake House ...this song started...and I had to look for it. Seems to be ... the words that reflect my life at this time. Love the song.
