Merge recently reissued The Clientele’s genuinely wonderful 2000 album,Suburban Light, as a two-disc special edition, and the lineup of the band that made that record plays tonight.
Obits, Biblical, Sun Ladders @ Union Pool
This week’s edition of Union Pool’s free “Summer Thunder” series is headlined by Sub Pop’s snarling rock band Obits. Bands usually start around 4PM.
Liam Finn, August Wells, Laura Stevenson @ Le Poisson Rouge
On his new album, The Nihilist, Finn played 67 instruments. That actually sounds about right, as anyone who’s seen his live shows knows the dude can play anything. And often does!

It’s a good night for heavy music at Brooklyn NIght Bazaar with metallic hardcore faves Trap Them, post-hardcore rippers Coliseum, and local NYHC-inspired crew Incendiary.
The Sheiks, Vulture Shit, Washer, DONE @ Cake Shop
Memphis garage rockers The Sheiks, who you may have seen when they toured with John Wesley Coleman last year, have a pretty good pedigree. Singer Frank McLallen also currently plays bass in Ex Cult, and the band’s new 7″ was produced by Jack Oblivian.
Mexican Slang, Parlor Walls, Truthers @ Death By Audio
Toronto’s Mexican Slang will bring you right back to the ’60s with their psychedelic rock that’s genuinely trippy.
CYMBALS, Future Punx, Donovan Blanc @ Glasslands
UK band CYMBALS released their new album, The Age Of Fracture, earlier this year and if you’re a fan of Hot Chip this might just appeal to you to. This is a good lineup all-around, with nu-wavers Future Punx and Captured Tracks’ signee Donovan Blanc.
Bill Nye The Science Guy @ Irving Plaza
A PBS kids TV superstar in the ’90s, Bill has seen a resurgence lately (we could use more science in the world) and will be doing three sold-out nights at Irving Plaza, this being the second.
Champagne Jerry @ Joe’s Pub
Brooklyn rapper and Ad-Rock collaborator Champagne Jerry continues his monthly Joe’s Pub residency.
Robert Hood, Objekt, RROSE, Vatican Shadow, Container, Young Male @ MoMA PS1
As always, the weekly Warm Up lineup is filled with forward-thinking electronic music, this time from minimal techno pioneer Robert Hood, Dominick Fernow’s “militant religious industrial” project Vatican Shadow, noisemaker Container, and still more.
Deltron 3030, Nomadic Massive @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Alternative rap supergroup Deltron 3030 — Del tha Funky Homosapien, Kid Koala and Dan the Automator — made their long-awaited return in 2013 with a new album and a tour with a full orchestra. They’re back for this free Celebrate Brooklyn! show.

The four-day Gigawatts Festival is in full swing with a huge lineup of bands and this all-day event. There’s a ton of great bands but we suggest Honduras, Low Fat Getting High, Slothrust, Mannequin Pussy and Ski Lodge in particular.
Ava Luna, Man Forever, Warehouse @ Rough Trade
Brooklyn’s funk-punk collective Ava Luna headline this show, but don’t miss openers Warehouse who are from Atlanta and make noisy postpunk. In between is Man Forever, aka Oneida drummer Kid Millions.
>Bouncing Souls, The Menzingers, Ted Leo @ Stone Pony
NJ punk heroes The Bouncing Souls turn 25 this year and they’re celebrating that anniversary with this show in their hometown tonight. Opening is The Menzingers, who owe a thing or two the Souls, and another beloved punk vet, Ted Leo.
Kind of Like Spitting, Living Room, Caravela, Salvatore Rex @ Suburbia
Kind of Like Spitting spent the 2000s making killer emotional indie rock, and in recent years main man Ben Barnett reactivated the band. They’re still not the most active though, tonight’s their first NYC show in two years.
Gogol Bordello, Man Man @ The Capitol Theatre
The always-wild gypsy punks Gogol Bordello don’t hit NYC on their current tour, but they’ll be nearby for three area shows, this being the second. The eccentric Man Man will be a good fit too.
Drowners @ The Surf Lodge
Owing a lot to the early ’00s sound of The Strokes and The Libertines, local rock band (and former models) Drowners know their way around a hook and catchy chorus. If you’re out in Montauk today, this free show is certainly a good option.
Los Rockwells, Artanker Convoy, Christy & Emily @ Trans-Pecos
Rumbling out of hibernation, jazzy, dubby Artanker Convey spin their web tonight.
Ma Jolie, The Great Apes, The Britnays, Jumpers @ Shea Stadium
Ma Jolie make noodly post-hardcore that hearkens back to bands like Bear vs Shark (whose song “Ma Jolie” may or may not have inspired this band name).
Murphy’s Law, Yuppicide, Jenncity @ Rocks Off Concert Cruise
NYC punks Murphy’s Law have been at it since the early ’80s and there’s still never a lack of chances to see them in action.
