Conor Oberst, Dawes & Larkin Poe @ Summerstage -- 7/29/14

"Each stage of Oberst's career is intentionally different than previous iterations (we are talking about the guy that released an electronic and acoustic album on the same day), but Dawes and the others had no problems keeping true to their spirit. The organ from "If The Brakeman Turns My Way" was spot on, and the strings and brass nicely accompanied their respective songs. Once again, Goldsmith deserves a special mention for his guitar playing that at times was reminiscent of Mark Knopfler's during the 80s.

The encore consisted of two of the five tracks from I'm Wide Awake played that night, and both were smart choices. First was "Lua", played with minimal backing and ended with another trumpet on solo by Walcott, a performance that I will certainly not forget, it was moving and sweet; a beautiful coda on an already beautiful song. And lastly there was "Another Travelin' Song," a song that speaks for itself."

Conor Oberst (now past fake rape accusations) and Dawes are no strangers to supergroups and collaborations. In addition to Bright Eyes and the Mystic Valley Band, Oberst has been known to team up with M. Ward, Mike Mogis and My Morning Jacket's Jim James as Monsters of Folk. John McCauley of Deer Tick and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit joined Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes to play as Middle Brother. Pretty cool to now see another variation of all this folk and country tinged rock n' roll with the joining of Conor and Dawes on this current tour, where Dawes is both opening and backing Conor.

Last week that tour hit Central Park Summerstage (a venue that Dawes have also headlined) for a big NYC show one day after the boys (and sister duo Larkin Poe who were are also in Conor's band) hit Letterman to perform "Hundreds of Ways" off Conor's new album Upside Down Mountain (out now via Nonesuch). A day before that they were all at Newport Folk Fest for a 12 song set that you can listen to at NPR.

Letterman video and more pictures from Central Park, along with setlists, are below...

I kind of think Dawes is pretty boring but the show last week was really great. The sisters + Nate Wolcott helped a lot.

It turns out the girl who accused Conor of rape recanted everything she said and admitted that she was fabricating the whole ugly, sordid story. To Conor's credit, he stopped his lawsuit in the hope that this unseemly incident would just go away. It truly has except for the few who only look at the pictures and the bylines of the grocery store rags apparently. Before you ask a question (and post them in public!) like that, try to do a smidgeon of homework before slandering a standup, humble and very sensitive individual yet again! You go Conor Oberst! You're an inspiration to intelligent people everywhere!

Hey, it's about time that you guys posted something about Conor Oberst's concert. The show was one of the best that I've been to!

I was hoping to see photos that looked like photos, not instagramed iPhone images.
