P4k

It's not just you: Over the last five years, there's been a seismic shift in the way we engage with music. We tweet, tumbl, stream, and share our favorite songs; we scour dead links and navigate obtrusive pop-ups for the newest mixtapes; we watch our music videos on Youtube and Vevo. We watched the explosion of EDM, the birth of drill, the rise and fall of chillwave. We debated how to pronounce FKA twigs, whether the album was dead, and where Bobby Shmurda's hat went. We met Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Grimes, Jessie Ware, Disclosure, Miguel, and Charli XCX. We saw LCD Soundsystem break up, Neutral Milk Hotel reunite, and My Bloody Valentine release a new album--a shooting star if there ever was one. [Pitchfork]
By the end of this year it will be halfway through the current decade, and to mark that, Pitchfork is posting lists of the best tracks, albums, and videos of the decade so far, this week. Today, they put out their list of the top 200 tracks. Like most of Pitchfork's 'top tracks' lists, it ranges from big names to underdogs in indie, electronic, hip hop and more, plus a few huge radio-pop songs sprinkled in. Can you guess what made #1?

Check out the full list HERE and browse the top 20, below...

Posted by King Butt | August 18, 2014 9:35 AM

Just give Grimes the Nobel, Pritzker, MacArthur Fellows, and best POV scene already.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 9:36 AM

whew i was worried that Grimes wouldn't even be on this list. thank god

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 9:37 AM

If I ever needed proof that pitchfork in no way represents my musical taste, that list dose the trick.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 9:55 AM

I am so happy that I have not heard one song on the top 20

life is good

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:00 AM

@10:00 confirmed for never leaving his/her/its house

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:02 AM

Accurate, cause it shows music's downward spiral

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:08 AM

This is actually an a+ list

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:13 AM

@10:00 AM Time to pop that Yanni: Live at the Acropolis CD outta the stereo and listen to some music. You sound like a lame 30something who thinks good music stopped being released after you finished college.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:14 AM

@10:02 negative

I am out all the time, I just don't listen to FM radio or watch Mtv

I know who 90% of what the artists look like via BV and other forms social media, but I have never heard these songs.

Pretty happy about it too, since from the looks of it there is only 4 real bands on the top 20.

Sad days, when a plugged in machine and a voice gets you popular.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:16 AM

further proof of PF's irrelevance.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:21 AM

Say what you want Grimes is definitely the best thing on THAT list.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:24 AM

Hahhahahahahha

Kanye sucks. Even Obama thinks so.

@ 10:14

believe me buddy I listen to new bands almost daily, just not this pop/trendy bullshit that is a starter kit for people just getting into music spent all their itunes gift cards on.

it's all bullshit

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:32 AM

10:16 has never heard Get Lucky, which means that, in addition to not "watching MTV" (even though MTV hasn't played music in 15 years,) he has also never stepped foot in a retail establishment, or watched a television, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:34 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:41 AM

3 good songs in the top 10--two by singing rappers, one by Robyn

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:43 AM

holy fuck...just shoot us all now

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:46 AM

@10:32 I'm guessing you are white + overweight?

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:47 AM

Cannot decide what is more annoying - pitchfork using a Grimes song as their number 1 song of the decade, or posting a fucking news piece about Grimes calling other people irresponsible for posting past statements she actually made in interviews that were about doing drugs on her Wikipedia page and making it "part of her narrative" - STFU.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 10:54 AM

@10:47

white, but no overweight

any other questions?

sorry I am not up to date with trendy pop culture.

the music I usually find rarely makes any headlines.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:00 AM

@10:32 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! "I listen to new bands daily." You're killing me, bro!

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:03 AM

^^Can't even hide he's from the midwest.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:04 AM

11:00 AM is cooler than all of us. so underground

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:05 AM

so NJ is now considered the midwest?

I was at rvivr last night, so should I stop seeing good music and start shopping at the Gap so I can hear music I should be listening to?

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:10 AM

How can you know a song sucks if you've never heard it?

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:12 AM

Lorde's "Royals" should be #1 instead of #66

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:18 AM

@11:10 As bad the this list is, everone listed is better than rvivr

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:24 AM

I need Jersey Republican to tell me how I feel about this

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:24 AM

@11:12, the only song that I said sucked was the snippet of the Arcade Fire song I just listened to.

never heard any of the others

@11:24 at least they are a band making good music w actual instruments and not creating beats with something plug in and push buttons.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:32 AM

Guys, just ignore this list and Dance Yrself Clean.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:35 AM

11:24 - As much as I don't believe this dude hasn't heard Get Lucky, RVIVR>Grimes, Ariel Pink and most of this list.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 11:37 AM

all me and my frat bros think this list is so tits thanks p4k for keeping the indie vibes so fresh on the scene. keg stands!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:00 PM

@ 11:37

rvivr is definitely > than the list.

sorry these trendy dorks are protecting a list that was generated by tweens and their itunes gift cards.

^ (all 40+ posts) -- clickbait has been taken. that's all pretty much any list today is. I want to make a list of the top 50 most clickbaitish lists.

Kinda weird to do a best of decade list when the decade isn't even half over.

Only legitimately good song in the top 20 is Dance Yrself Clean.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:06 PM

Rvivrs is trendy. sorry to break that to ya

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:13 PM

I already barfed at 20. Help me get through this list.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:27 PM

Clearly Pitchfork's relevance matches up to my own: 2001-2008.

Sad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:29 PM

@12:13

they might be after this tour w Propaghandi is over, but they aren't yet.

after seeing them grow from basement shows, to st vitus, to union pool, to webster hall last night. they deserve it, bc they are fuckin stellar live.

now war on woman can go the fuck away, talk about a terrible band.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:37 PM

I just glad that you could make this list 10,000 songs deep and the quality would not drop off. It truly is a golden age that will be celebrated in decades to come as the peak of all of music.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:37 PM

ariel pink deserves his spot for round and round, seriously an amazing track.

Katy Perry's teenage dream should be higher, I was wondering if 'round and round' would be high considering it was the song of the year at PF, but they seem to forget about things like that

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:49 PM

"at least they are a band making good music w actual instruments and not creating beats with something plug in and push buttons."

okay, sorry for offending your close-minded view on how music should be made dad. have you ever considered that when you say "actual instruments" you're almost always only referring to guitar, bass and drums, and that more often than not, those parts are simplistic and unoriginal?

"music" does not equal "rock," and that genre has been scoffed at by pre-rock musicians the same way you're scoffing at electronic music. not to mention, you think it takes "real talent" to play guitar but not "real talent" to make electronic music? give Ableton to any of the members of RVIVR and see how good at it they are. it's a whole lot harder to learn than three fucking power chords.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 12:53 PM

@12:37

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

::puts on the new Nai Harvest/Playlounge split to forget your stupidity::

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:01 PM

Please post the full list so I can laugh at Pitchfork without being baited to give them 200 clicks.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:07 PM

@12:53

I am not close minded and I do love electronic music, turntabilism, electro, drum/bass, dubstep, breakz, whatever.

been seeing DJs and producers perform since the mid 90s.

The title of the post is "Pitchfork's Top 200 Tracks of the Decade So Far (2010-2014)"

If this list is what they are selling, then a lot of people need to get their ears checked, because it is embarrassing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:18 PM

@1:18 no one is saying they like it... this whole thread has turned into a discussion about how you never heard any of those songs, Mr. Strawman.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:20 PM

it's broken up into 10 pages of 20 each, what a PITA, I skipped past the writers' orgasms about each song, 200 songs covering nearly 5 years and you have several bands with more than one song, kind of ridiculous

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:20 PM

pretty rad that pitchfork was able to compile a list based on what all the girls in high school listen to.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:20 PM

"pretty rad"

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:29 PM

more like "pretty bad" as far as this list goes

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:33 PM

"more like"

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 1:34 PM

Not enough Witch House.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 2:22 PM

"Only In My Dreams" should have been higher.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 3:09 PM

Oh that Deerhunter track :'(

Posted by Erica | August 18, 2014 3:21 PM

I hereby nominate Larry Fitzmaurice for the shit bucket challenge

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 3:30 PM

hummus

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 3:58 PM

The list overall sucks. But the fact that a woman is in the number one spot, is pretty impressive for the otherwise sexist Pitchfork. Grimes is a great pop star, so it makes sense. And she's definitely the best thing in that 20 list.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 4:32 PM

"Please post the full list so I can laugh at Pitchfork without being baited to give them 200 clicks"

AGREE WITH 107

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 4:45 PM

Kanye's "Bound II" does not appear anywhere on this list

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2014 5:04 PM

^

Are you really the jerk off who does not think there is enough Kanye on a p4k list?

Bring back gangsta rap.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2014 10:48 AM

no Grimes?

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2014 11:09 AM

loving 10:00's continuous attempts to forget stupidity by listening to some of the blandest 2014 #emorevival shit. even though prawn has been around since before 2010 they still manage to sound like the most boring "atmospheric indie rock" fucking ever. ever heard of the van pelt, dawg?

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2014 11:45 AM

Shocked, no Radiohead, its Pitchfork. I'm speaking about Pitchfork circa 2000. Sue me.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2014 7:00 PM

With the exception of Grimes, this list sucks. In fact the second half of the decade seems to just suck, though 2014 sucked slightly less than 2012/2013. My guess is that things will continue to improve in the second half of the decade. All the crap from the first half will die off, and things will start to become awesome again in the second half of the decade.

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2014 7:59 PM

Newark.

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2014 8:44 PM

why are people so divided on grimes? some people hail her as a genius, others say she's terrible. she's good, but not #1 great. pitchfork just put her track on top because of its subject matter
