Tashaki Miyaki

Indie pop infusion filled the garden at MoMA last night as Los Angeles-based Tashaki Miyaki took the stage as part of the MoMA Nights series that continues through the end of the August. Families, older couples, twenty-somethings, art-types, music lovers and everyone in between came to support the trio's lilting, spacey folk-pop in the beautiful enclosure that flanks MoMA's galleries. While there were no waves of dancing or swaying sing-alongs, you could tell the audience was paying attention. Plus, it gave Tashaki Miyaki the honor of standing alone as a piece of art, among the other modern art greats. With no openers, the night was truly Tashaki Miyaki's, and those who stayed for the entire set were not disappointed. [CMJ]
Like Ex Hex before them, LA trio Tashaki Miyaki played the ongoing MoMA Nights series last night (August 7). Their dreamy, Mazzy Star-influenced pop was a great fit for the arty outdoor space at MoMA, and in addition to their own stuff, they threw in a cover of Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." Pictures of the show are in this post.

Tashaki Miyaki are in NYC for the weekend, playing a couple more shows. They'll be at The Studio at Webster Hall on Saturday (8/9) with Dinowalrus, Honey Wild, and Turnip King (tickets), and then they'll be at Baby's All Right on Sunday (8/10) with Tiny Ruins, Weyes Blood, and Belle Mare (tickets).

Hipster #1: Tashaki Miyaki? I don't get what their name is supposed to mean.

Hipster #2: It's because they're NOT JAPANESE! Such modern irony... so powerful.

1:07 - Judging by the photos of that audience, there were no hipsters in attendance. Mostly senior citizens.

I'll take "Amish-looking Bands with Japanese-sounding Names" for $100, Alex.

That's a joke, right? I went last night. I showed up at 7 (which is when I thought the show started) and they were finishing up the last song. Apparently they went on at 6:30 and played for all of 30 minutes. I'm a MOMA member, so didn't have to pay to get in, but had I paid the full $25 admission I would have been SUPER pissed.
