Boomtown Rats

Like Madness and the Jam, the Boomtown Rats generally matched considerable Anglo-European success with near-total American commercial obscurity. Despite a string of intelligent, irresistible pop singles and intricate, skillful, unpredictable albums filled with assorted musical styles and sounds, the only US hit the Rats ever had was the morbid ballad "I Don't Like Mondays." While their albums are not uniformly excellent, the band's commitment to quality and growth, plus singer/songwriter Bob Geldof's magnetic personality, help elevate even lesser efforts to listenability, and much of their work is downright brilliant. - [Trouser Press]
The Boomtown Rats reformed in 2013 to play the Isle of Wight Festival, their first live performance since 1986, and have kept playing shows. They'll be in the Northeast this fall to play New York's Terminal 5 on September 26 and Boston's Royale on September 28. Tickets to the T5 and Boston shows are on sale now.

Both those US shows are part of the "Smithwick's Presents The Big Session" featuring fellow Irish bands The Stunning, and Mundy. All dates are listed, along with a few videos, below...

Huh, I wouldn't think that Geldolf would want to perform on 10/22, 10/29, or 11/6...

Great band in their new wave era heyday! Not so sure how good it can be in 2014 but still, this is pretty cool.

The boomtown rats' appearance at amnesty intl show last spring at Barclays was met with an astounding amount of ambivalence. It was cringeworthy.

"much of their work is downright brilliant." more evidence that rock critics are idiots that are failed musicians themselves. "I don't like Mondays" is a good song I'll give them that.

Had no idea Joss Whedon was in Boomtown Rats.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2014 9:28 AM

was the Appearance at the Barclays The Boomtown Rats or was it Bob Geldorf solo with a backing band? It was billed as just Geldorf, but appeared to be the Rats. Anyone know?

Geldof cancels Italian tour after only 45 fans turn up for Milan gig

The Guardian, Sunday 23 July 2006

Millions of people like to hear Bob Geldof talk about causes as diverse as debt relief and the rights of fathers but it seems not so many, at least in Italy, are as keen to hear him sing.
The Irish rock musician and political activist beat a retreat back to London at the weekend after cancelling concerts in Milan and Rome because too few fans had bought tickets.

Only 45 people turned up on Friday at Milan's Civic Arena for a performance by the 51-year-old singer and songwriter. The venue has a capacity of 12,000.

Peschi could play the one on the right in Scorsese's movie, but the one on the left has to be David Gest
