Graham Johnson belting it at Pulp karaoke (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Graham

The Pulp karaoke contest recently went down in NYC as the afterparty for the Rooftop FIlms screening of director Florian Habicht's Pulp documentary, PULP: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets. Habicht and Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker judged, and as you may know, 9-year old Graham Johnson took home the crown for his performance of "This Is Hardcore" (which some say is perhaps not the most appropriate song for a 9-year old, but there was plenty of cheering too). Habicht's now posted a video of Graham's performance, including his and Jarvis' post-song interview of the kid, which you can watch below...

I heard more cheers than disgust.

8:49, sounds like he has a pretty huge family!

Jarvis seems uncomfortable but trying to be nice to the kid. The audience probably felt the same way.

Hahah what a little weapon! Absolute showman

god, poor jarvis. watching a rich, white, privileged kid, way past his bed time, singing this (oh, he didn't know the words - fuck off) . these parents are the exact people jarvis had been singing against/about for all these years. had to leave.

this kid is going to grow up to be queerer than an $8 bill

It was nice to see a young boy and his father both knowing already that the kid is gay.
Otherwise, the girl standing behind me has promissed me the kid was sensational, after watching him on youtube. I personally did not find his singing or voice that good at all, but the crowd loved him. Who said that, dogs and kids will always steal the show?

Do you remember the first time? Kid?

Future shrimper

This kid will turn his back on hardcore within the year.

"Jarvis seems uncomfortable but trying to be nice to the kid. The audience probably felt the same way."

That's part of the problem and why exactly a 9-year old wins. The whole parenting method of "being as delicate with a little kid's self-esteem as possible" at the expense of most likely better performances.

"this kid is going to grow up to be queerer than an $8 bill"

You mean like 8:59 and most of the BV scarf demographic?

the vibe in the crowd was ugly & angry. Jarvis was obviously angry too but kept his cool about it.

oh the sad little stage parents.

I"m going to go out on a limb and guess there is no going to be any football in this kid's future.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2014 1:16 PM

choosing an 8-minute song was the least of the stupid decisions that went into this stupid-decision pile-up

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2014 1:58 PM

I'm g oing to go out on a limb and guess this kid will be talking about this incident to his therapist for an indefinite amount of time.

what a thoroughly self-possessed little performer..love his moves and posturing! im sure he didn't quite understand the entirety of what he was singing, but he pulled it off in the most unique way. what a showman.
