What's going on Friday? (High on Fire, The Men, Frontier(s), Boogarins, Beverly, Sean Nicholas Savage, Ketsup & more)

High on Fire at Bowery Ballroom in 2012 (more by Fred Pesssaro)
HoF

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

High on Fire, Blackest @ MHOW
While the legendary Sleep will be heading out on tour soon, its members are still keeping busy with their other projects before and after that, including Matt Pike’s High on Fire who will bring stoner rock riffs for days at tonight’s free (if you RSVPed) Converse Rubber Tracks show.

Xeno & Oaklander, Cloudland Canyon, Frankie Teardrop (DJ) @ Baby’s All Right
Brooklyn neo-luddite duo Xeno & Oaklander make synthpop, the old-fashioned way: with analogue equipment, step-sequencers, patch cables and absolutely no laptops. Served ice-cold and loud as possible.

White Laces, The Yum Dee Days, Heaven, Christines @ Baby’s All Right
Richmond VA band White Laces make guitar pop that’s not miles away from the chiming sound of Beach Fossils. Their haze is matched well tonight with three worthy local acts.

The Soul Rebels Feat. Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Jean Grae, Skyzoo & Torae + Joey Bada$$, Subset @ Brooklyn Bowl
New Orleans brass band The Soul Rebels return to NYC tonight and will have a few exciting guest rappers performing with them: Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Jean Grae, Skyzoo & Torae, and the young rising star, Joey Bada$$.

The Men, Purling Hiss, Honey, Friend, DJ Toy @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Since their debut LP in 2010, The Men have put out a record a year and have never made the same album twice. They’ve gone from dark, heavy punk to Replacements-y indie rock to Crazy Horse-style country rock jams. And it’s a good show all around. The grungy Purling Hiss and the heavy psych rock of Honey should fare well with The Men’s crowd.

Sean Nicholas Savage, Nicholas Nicholas, Jerry Paper @ Death by Audio
Prolific/talented songwriter and lo-fi recording enthusiast Sean Nicholas Savage records for Montreal’s Abutus Records. He’s in town to open for Blood Orange this weekend in Central Park but plays this smaller show tonight.

Ketsup (Austra DJ Set), Doldrums (DJ Set), SMALL MOSHEEIN, RAMZi@ Palisades
Speaking of Arbutus, the label is throwing this dance party at Palisades featuring Katie Stelmanis in her Ketsup guise, plus sets from Doldrums, a live performance from new Montreal band RAMZi and more.

ARMS, Conveyor @ Mercury Lounge
Brooklyn band ARMS (the current project of former Harlem Shakes guitarist Todd Goldstein) pay tribute to some of their influences  on a new covers album, Backwards Record, which is out next month. Hopefully we’ll hear a few of those tonight.

Sharkmuffin, Food Stamps, The Sleepy ZZZ, Surfbort, Foreign Speakers @ Muchmore’s
Brooklyn garage rock trio Sharkmuffin are a newer band, but sound straight out of the garage rock boom of the last decade. Picture something between Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sahara Hotnights and you’ll get an idea.

Beverly, Earthy Babes, Truthers @ Rough Trade
Beverly’s debut album, Careers, is full of effortlessly catchy indie pop (think prime Kim Deal). They’ve become a pretty good live band too — catch them here before their tour with The Drums.

Downtown Boys, Weird Womb, Vomitface, Big Huge @ Shea Stadium
Downtown Boys are one of those bands you have to see live to fully experience. They make politically-charged, saxophone-fueled punk, the singer gives impassioned speeches between songs, and almost all the members end up in the crowd. Noisy punks Weird Womb are worth catching too.

Boogarins, Jacco Gardner @ South Street Seaport
Perfect weather and a free outdoor show featuring two very different and very good variations of psych — Jacco Gardner is straight outa Syd Barrett’s saucerful of secrets, and Brazil’s Boogarins are more groovy, jammy and guitar-oriented. Free!

Thievery Corporation, Lee Fields & the Expressions @ JBL Live at Pier 97
It’s an interesting double bill at this big outdoor show with Thievery Corporation’s dub/reggae/etc-infused electronica and Lee Fields’ classic soul.

Jungbluth, Centuries, Hexis, Plebian Grandstand, Reproacher @ The Acheron
Jungbluth take on ’90s-style hardcore and screamo and Centuries make dark d-beaty hardcore. Tonight their tour hits NYC.

Frontier(s), Banquets, Image Society @ Saint Vitus
Though many of the now-classic ’90s emo bands are currently reunited (like Sunny Day Estate, Mineral, American Football, The Get Up Kids, Braid, Knapsack and The Jazz June), one of those, Elliott, sadly remains broken up. However, singer Chris Higdon is currently fronting the band Frontier(s) who keep that ’90s sound alive and well without sounding like a nostalgia project.

Multicult, Couch Slut, Vulture Shit, Chamber of Discipline @ Cake Shop
Baltimore noise rockers Multicult return to NYC tonight and there’s good local support from hardcore band Couch Slut, guitar-less punks Vulture Shit, and Chamber of Discipline who include members of Vaz, Pygmy Shrews and Sleepies.

‘Daylight’ w/ Teengirl Fantasy, Pictureplane, Shams, Lafawndah, Profligate, Babi Audi, Excepter, Sagan Youth, 51717, Holly Waxwing, Motion Graphics @ Europa
This is night 1 of DIY-dance fest DAYLIGHT, featuring a slew of talented beatmakers.
