hard-girls

What's going on Sunday? (Hard Girls, Propagandhi, EPMD, Echo & the Bunnymen, Butterscott, The Weaks, more)

Hard Girls

Jeff Rosenstock, Hard Girls, Broadcaster, Chumped @ Death by Audio
All three members of San Jose’s Hard Girls back former Operation Ivy frontman Jesse Michaels in his band Classics of Love, and on their own they make scrappy punk rock that feels right at home on their label Asian Man Records. We at BrooklynVegan are proud to present tonight’s NYC stop of their tour with Broadcaster, which also features a full-band set from Jeff Rosenstock (frontman of the now-defunct Bomb the Music Industry) and strong locals Chumped. Hope to see you there!

United Nations, Frameworks, Bottomfeeder @ Asbury Lanes
United Nations began as a side project for Geoff Rickly to make extremely heavier music than his main band while he was still in Thursday. Now that that band has called it quits, Geoff is putting a lot more time into United Nations, and even if he insists the project is an elaborate joke poking fun at punk rock, it sounds like one hell of a serious punk rock band. Openers Frameworks pull from a similar type of post-hardcore that UN do (and they probably pull a bit from Thursday as well), and they make a good match.

Echo & The Bunnymen, Mikky Ekko @ Irving Plaza
Despite having a new album, Meteorites, that frontman Ian McCulloch says is their best album in years (he says that about every album) the Bunnymen’s recent setlists have been mostly a hit fest. If Songs to Learn and Sing is your favorite album, you’ll be in heaven (up here) tonight.

Eminem, Rihanna @ MetLife Stadium
It may be over ten years since Eminem’s put out a great album, but The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show are all hip hop classics, and you’re bound to hear plenty of those at tonight’s show.

Prince Rupert’s Drops, Butterscott, Zapps @ Union Pool
Brooklyn psych band PRD headline this show, but perhaps more notable is Boston cult legend Butterscott who has been doing home four-track recordings and releasing cassettes for more that 20 years.

Delorean @ Surf Lodge
After playing the BV-presented show at Baby’s All Right last night, Spanish dance troupe Delorean play this free show at this hip Montauk hideout.

Gregory Mendez, The Weaks, Jenna Smith, Last Full Measure, Radiator King @ Palisades
Philly duo The Weaks (aka Evan Bernard and Chris Baglivo, both ex-Dangerous Ponies) aren’t shy about calling themselves products of the ’90s, which is certainly the vibe you get from this year’s The World Is A Terrible Place And I Hate Myself And I Want To Die. Fellow Philly band Last Full Measure are also along for the ride.

Propagandhi, War on Women, Rvivr @ Webster Hall
Canadian skate punks-turned-thrashers Propagandhi are known for railing against racism, sexism, homophobia, etc and play tonight with two bands with similar agendas, RVIVR and War on Women.

Hannibal Buress @ Knitting Factory
Big league comedy talent (Chris Rock, Louis CK, etc) show up regularly (and unannounced) for Hannibal’s very popular free comedy show at Knitting Factory’s front bar. Having had his own Comedy Central special and a featured performer on Broad City, Hannibal himself is getting pretty big league. Get there early.

UPDATE: No Hannibal Buress show tonight.

Chicago, REO Speedwagon @ Jones Beach
Close your eyes and it’s 1984 when “I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore” and “You’re the Inspiration” were fighting for you slow dance power-ballad of choice.

Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, Kill Frenzy, Christian Martin @ 50 Kent
This is the dirtybird BBQ, featuring “a big day of sizzling grooves, food and fun in the sun.” Special guests on the bill are ’80s Def Jam hip hop legends EPMD.

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
