Pity Sex at MHOW in June (more by Mimi Hong)
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
Jeremih, Run The Jewels @ SIR Stage 37
In the past two years, Jeremih has proved he's come a long way from "Birthday Sex" by releasing some of the better songs of the "indie R&B" movement and still keeping his radio-ready accessibility on other tracks. Meanwhile, Run The Jewels (aka Killer Mike and El-P) make no-frills hardcore hip hop that sounds fresh in an era where that style usually doesn't.
Drake, Lil Wayne @ Forest Hills Stadium
Over the course of his three albums, Drake's evolved into someone capable of making some of the best modern pop songs in recent memory. His old pal Wayne co-headlines this show with him.
Blu & MED @ SOB's
California rapper Blu remains relatively underground, but he has an extremely dedicated fanbase, and in some circles he's considered one of hip hop's true recent gems. He remains very prolific too, with a new album, EP and multiple collaborative tracks out this year.
Royksopp, Justin Miller @ Output
Royksopp's tour with Robyn in support of their new collaborative mini-LP hits NYC's big Pier 97 tomorrow, but before that you can see Royksopp DJ a much more intimate location tonight.
Basement, Pity Sex, Superheaven (formerly Daylight), Ovlov @ Webster Hall
The UK's Basement went on hiatus for about two years, but they're back now with a new EP that will bring you right back to '90s rock radio (there's a Suede cover on it too). Tonight's support recalls the same decade, with shoegazers Pity Sex, Hum lovers Superheaven, and Dino Jr lovers Ovlov.
Spider Bags, Las Rosas, The Rally @ Union Pool
Spider Bags make classic-sounding garage rock that should really be experienced in a live environment, and the small-ish Union Pool is exactly the kind of place you want to see them.
Cymbals Eat Guitars @ Apple Store Soho
Cymbals Eat Guitars make some serious rock music on their new album, LOSE, which expands upon their already-solid sound and includes some of their best songs yet. Tonight's their first of SIX hometown shows for the NYC band in the next month.
Midge Ure @ Iridum
The onetime Ultravox / Visage member will soon be on the Retro Futura tour with Howard Jones, China Crisis and more, but here's a chance to catch him in a much more intimate setting.
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars @ Highline Ballroom
Sierra Leon's Refugee All Stars are literally a band of refugees. They've been successfully making music for years now, and their profile only continues to increase.
The Sidekicks, Sundials, Dowsing, Brick Mower @ Asbury Lanes
The Sidekicks, Sundials and Dowsing all toe the line between punk and indie rock, and they're on a tour together which hits NYC this Friday but will be in NJ first, tonight. Locals Brick Mower fit the bill perfectly too.
The Sweetback Sisters, The Tall Pines @ Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival
The Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival continues today with free music in the evening (5 PM start) outside of City Winery. Tonight's lineup leans towards country/folk.
