What's going on Friday? (Joanna Gruesome, Handsome Family, Single Mothers, Una Bestia Incontrolable & more)

Joanna Gruesome @ Shea Stadium earlier this week (more by Dylan Johnson)
Joanna

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Joanna Gruesome, Big Ups @ South Street Seaport (FREE)
Joanna Gruesome pull equally from indie pop and aggressive punk, and the energy of their super-fun live shows leans more towards the latter. Big Ups pull from early ’90s post-hardcore, and like JG, their live show is really where it’s at. This show is free — a great way to start off your Labor Day Weekend.

Handsome Family, Richard Buckner, Cereus Bright @ Rough Trade
True Detective may not have scored much at this year’s Emmys, but the hit HBO show certainly brought deserved attention to veteran Americana gothic band Handsome Family via “Far From Any Road,” which was used as the theme song.

Single Mothers, Dope Body, Vulture Shit, Ed Schrader’s Music Beat @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Canada’s Single Mothers have been making highly promising literate punk for a few years now, and this year they’re finally ready to release their long-awaited debut LP. The rest of the bill is great too, with noise rockers Dope Body, guitar-less punks Vulture Shit, and post-punks Ed Schrader’s Music Beat.

Love as Laughter, August Wells, Prince Rupert’s Drops @ Baby’s All Right
Sam Jayne has fronted various incarnations of indie rock band Love As Laughter for 20 years, moving the band from the Pacific Northwest to Brooklyn. Their new single, “LZY SLDR,” finds them still in catchy top form. Psych rockers Prince Ruperts Drops, set to drop a new album soon, open the show.

Boytoy, Las Rosas, Threats @ Baby’s All Right
Las Rosas are perhaps Brooklyn’s best garage rock band. This late night show (doors at midnight) is free.

Una Bestia Incontrolable, Survival, Nandas, Negation @ Death by Audio
Una Bestia Incontrolable are in town all the way from Barcelona for two shows in NYC this weekend, this being the first. Their new 7″ on Iron Lung Records suggests this will be a wild show.

Ratking, Salomon Faye @ Pianos
Alt-rap trio Ratking have no lack of shows in their hometown of NYC, and this one’s on the smaller side.

Perfect Pussy, Potty Mouth @ Asbury Lanes
Perfect Pussy’s live shows are rarely more than 15 minutes of nonstop noise punk, and the short sets are always an absolute thrill to watch. Potty Mouth’s poppy punk is a good match.

Hector’s Pets, Big Huge, Sunset Guns @ Rippers
It’s the unofficial end of Summer, so why not spend it at this Rockaway Beach spot with a night of free music, headlined by Burger band Hector’s Pets? The fun starts at 6 PM.

Electric Zoo @ Randall’s Island
EDM festival Electric Zoo is probably something you want to avoid at all costs, but on the off chance you’re getting dragged there, there’s some stuff worth catching today like A-Trak, Jamie xx, Gesaffelstein, Bonobo, Gorgon City and Tensnake.

Mötley Crüe, Alice Cooper @ Jones Beach
Two generations of authority-thumbing hard rock hit Jones Beach tonight. The musicians who made the music may be getting up there but “Dr. Feelgood” and “Eighteen” (amongst others) remain rebel classics.

The Ugly Club, Bellows, Terrible Terrible, eskimeaux, Stargazy @ Shea Stadium
If you like introverted bedroom indie pop, Bellows and Eskimeaux (who share members) should both be up your alley.

Such Hounds, Dead Stars, Left & Right, Crow Bait @ The Grand Victory
Relive various sounds of the ’90s with indie rockers Dead Stars, poppy punks Left & Right, and alt-country punks Crow Bait.

Mouth of the Architect, Set And Setting, So Hideous, Hush @ The Acheron
For those who like their metal on the atmospheric side, all four bands at the Acheron tonight should hit the spot.
