The Flaming Lips collaborated with Death by Audio on limited edition "Space Ring Pedal"

The good folks at guitar pedal shop Death by Audio have just announced their latest limited-edition artist collaboration: The Flaming Lips Space Ring Pedal. That’s what it looks like (naked torso not included), above, and here’s a description of what it does:

The Flaming Lips have worked with Death By Audio to design a truly unique effect capable of manipulating and transporting sound into exciting new dimensions. The circuit works by using a telephone decoding chip that is then squashed into a ring modulator comprised of specially matched diodes and custom wound transformers. This creates blooming, rich sounds ranging from warped tremolo staccatos to wild arpeggiator type sequences to alien fax machines hurled at the sun.

The Space Ring has knobs for Volume, Psychedelic Warp, and an XYZ switch that flips the carriers with the modulators to create more modulated insanity.

To hear what that actually sounds like, check out a video in this post. The Flaming Lips Space Ring Pedal is only available the month of September and comes with a poster designed by Wayne Coyne. The first 200 pedals are signed by the band — order yours.

Previous DbA collaborations have included Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees’ John Dwyer.

In other news, Lips side project Electric Wurmz released their album a couple weeks back, and Flaming Lips’ song-by-song cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is due later this year.
