Sonny and the Sunsets in Austin in 2013 (more by Glen Brown)
Sonny

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

Sonny and the Sunsets, Cassie Ramone, The Whips @ Death by Audio
Sonny Smith is putting the finishing touches his and The Sunsets' new album which should be out early next year. In the meantime, he and the new line-up of The Sunsets (with Shayde from Fresh & Onlys on bass) are on tour. A real charmer, any opportunity to catch Sonny should be seized.

Mineral, Into It. Over It. @ Bowery Ballroom
One of the most beloved bands of emo's late '90s period, Mineral, are back for their first tour in 17 years, and the first tour since the release of their slowcore-leaning classic swan song, EndSerenading. Tonight's the second of four sold-out NYC shows, all of which are opened by newer emo band Into It. Over It.

Mike Birbiglia @ BAM
Comedian, actor, and master of self-deprecating storytelling, Mike Birbiglia is no stranger to BAM, having recently appeared in This American Life: One Night Only at BAM (which actually ended up having two nights). Tonight he debuts his new show, "Thank God For Jokes."

Modern Baseball, Beach Slang, Chumped, Crow Bait @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
If you're not going to Mineral, but still want something to emo tonight (or are looking for plans after -- BK Bazaar is open til 1 AM), this free show has your fix. There's the youthful and super lyrical Modern Baseball, the Jawbreaker-meets-Replacements and endlessly quotable Beach Slang, poppy punks Chumped, and alt-country punks Crow Bait. Good night all around.

Papercuts, Olson, Rydholm and Forester, Michael Nau @ Baby's All Right
If you dig rainy day baroque pop, Papercuts (the moniker of San Francisco's Jason Quever) do it very well and their new record, Life Among the Savages, is quite good. Opening are Ladybug Transistor offshoot Olson, Rydholm and Forester.

DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Edan, Paten Locke @ Irving Plaza
Two veteran hip hop DJs and collaborators DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist are currently on the road for a tour where they're DJing exclusively from Afrika Bambaataa's personal vinyl collection. Tonight's the second of two shows at Irving Plaza this week, with strong support coming from psych rapper Edan and his collaborator Paten Locke.

Total Slacker, PAWS, Flashlights @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
This whole bill is good, but we especially recommend catching Scottish trio PAWS while they're in town. Their brand of Japandroids-style pop punk/indie rock works especially well and they put on fun shows.

Part Time, Sea Lions, ONWE @ Cake Shop
San Francisco's Part Time walk a similar line to Ariel Pink, taking soft rock and synth pop, twisting it and making it their own. Their new tour single, "My Jamey," is ridiculously catchy. It is disappointing that scheduled tourmates Gap Dream pulled out before the trek began, but they got a good replacement in Oxnard, CA's charmingly shambolic The Sea Lions. This should be a fun show.

Mount Sharp, Sunset Hearts, The Van Burens, Moon Furies @ Pianos
Brooklyn trio Mount Sharp are refreshingly gimmick free, with singer Sarah Wood's strong songwriting and appealing vocals setting their fuzzy guitar pop apart from the pack.

Twisted Sister, Adrenaline Mob @ Best Buy Theater
Skintight pants, moussed up hair, and anthems about not taking it and wanting to rock still your bag? Best Buy Theater's the place to be then.

Rudimental, Redlight, My Nu Leng @ Terminal 5
Rudimental's style of UK dancepop may not be as heady as say, Disclosure's or SBTRKT's, but it's certainly made for some on-stage spectacles at their live shows.

Saul Williams, Osekre & The Lucky Bastards, Patrice, Koku Gonza @ Le Poisson Rouge
Part of the multicultural Aputumpu Fall Festival series, this show is headlined by singer, musician, poet, writer, and actor Saul Williams.

Dither, Andrea Parkins & Brian Chase (of YYYs), Cleric, DJ Rupture, Lee Ranaldo, Tigue, Brandon Seabrook & more at St. Ann & the Holo Trinity Church
It's the fifth annual Dither Extravangza, a new music event led by electric guitar quartet Dither, and it has a great lineup including members of Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more.

Champagne Jerry, Lil Freckles @ Union Pool
Tongue-in-cheek Brooklyn rapper -- and Ad-Rock collaborator -- Champagne Jerry plays somewhere that's not Joe's Pub for once. Maybe Jerry will pull Bridget Everett and Carmine Covelli along with him for this show?

Social Distortion, The Whigs, Jonny Two Bags @ The Paramount
Veteran punk rockers Social Distortion don't hit NYC on their current tour, but they'll be nearby for tonight's Long Island show, their second in the area.

For all of tonight's shows, and tomorrow's, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
