What's going on Tuesday? (Karen O, Philip Glass & Steve Reich, Elephant Stone, Laurel Halo, Shannon & Clams, more)

Karen O w/ Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Barclays Center in 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Karen O

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Karen O @ McKittrick Hotel
Karen O’s first (but recorded 7 years ago) solo album, Crush Songs, is out now, and unlike Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ increasingly bigger sounding music, it’s raw introverted bedroom folk. This week’s four intimate shows (starting with tonight’s) should fit the sound well.

Philip Glass Ensemble & Steve Reich & Musicians @ BAM
Nonesuch Records’ 50th anniversary at BAM begins today, and kicking off the celebration is the first live collaboration in over thirty years from contemporary composer greats Philip Glass and Steve Reich. They’re in the Howard Gilman Opera House, and Brad Mehldau will be performing in the Harvey Theater.

Elephant Stone, Painted Zeros @ Mercury Lounge
Montreal’s Elephant Stone share their name with a Stone Roses single and on their new album Three Poisons, they definitely embrace the Madchester baggy sound. They’re pretty killer live — and how often do you get to see a rock band with sitar?

YOU, Starred, Venerence @ Palisades
Brooklyn band YOU just released their new album Sunchaser which, apart from the title, stays mostly in gloomy climates with dark postpunk. Tonight’s the record release party.

Laurel Halo @ The Kitchen
Non-profit NYC performance space The Kitchen is hosting its Synth Nights series once again, this time with Laurel Halo, who has made everything from hard-edged IDM to boundary-pushing pop. She’s presenting new works at this, so we’re in for a surprise.

Shannon and the Clams, Boytoy, The Mystery Lights @ Union Pool
With a sound straight out of the early days of Rock n’ Roll, Shannon & the Clams bring big hooks and personality (and a lot of fun) to the table. This is Shannon’s first of the NYC shows this week.

Justin Townes Earle, American Aquarium @ Stage 48
Justin Townes Earle makes more of his classic-sounding folk/country on his new album, Single Mothers, which is out today on Vagrant.

Die Antwoord @ Terminal 5
Round two for wacky South African rappers Die Antwoord in NYC tonight.

Banks @ Rough Trade
The R&B/indie crossover continues and Banks is one of the genre’s many fast-rising singers. She’s got a sold out show coming up at Terminal 5, but tonight’s is at the much smaller Rough Trade and all you have to do to get in is buy her new album at the Rough Trade store today.

Fashion Rocks w/ KISS, Duran Duran, Usher, Jennifer Lopez & more @ Barclays Center
The annual Fashion Rocks concert is at Barclays Center this year, and it’s a chance to see some big rock bands of old and some big pop singers of new.

Sweet @ The Slipper Room
Seth Herzog’s comedy night Sweet is celebrating its 10th anniversary with three guest-filled shows this week, this is the second. Herzog has promised appearances by Colin Quinn, Hannibal Buress, Vanessa Bayer, Dave Hill, and Questlove at some point during the week, plus “special guests.” Who will show up tonight?
