The Drums on Novotel roof in July (more by Wei Shi)
Drums

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Public Enemy, PE2.0, Kendo The Almost Famous @ Brooklyn Bowl
Chuck D, Flava Flav, Professor Griff and the rest of the PE crew are in full effect tonight. Bass! Bring the noise!

Grouplove, Portugal. The Man, Typhoon @ Central Park Rumsey Playfield
We may not be the biggest fans of the headliner, but it’s worth hitting this show for the proggy indie rock of Portugal. The Man and the art/chamber pop of Typhoon.

Wand, Honey, Florida @ Death By Audio
A night off from their tour with Ty Segall (which hits NYC on Wednesday and Thursday), LA psych rock unit Wand play this much smaller, sure to be sweatier show, at one of Williamsburg’s last DIY spaces. Local band Honey are definitely worth showing up early for. And despite it seeming like something that would happen, Ty is NOT playing the show bummer!).

Sick Feeling, Turbogeist, Simon Doom @ Glasslands
Brooklyn’s Sick Feeling including current and former members of Ink & Dagger, Trail of Dead, Trash Talk and others, and they make a kind of killer hardcore punk that you may expect from a band with a resume like theirs. They were great at our Red Bull Sound Select show this past Friday. Catch them again tonight.

The Drums, Beverly @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Drums new album, Encyclopedia, adds some welcome dissonance to their usual helium-fueled surf pop. Tonight and Saturday’s shows are sold out but there’s a Sunday matinee at Rough Trade you can still get into.

Whirr, Sannhet, Cloakroom, Sad Actor @ The Studio at Webster Hall
It’s a good bill all around with the heavy shoegaze of Whirr, the sludgy slowcore of their tourmates Cloakroom, the post rock/post metal of locals Sannhet, and Whirr’s grungy pals, Sad Actor.

Lorde, Majical Cloudz @ United Palace Theatre
Australian pop ingenue/sensation and emotional bare wire Majical Cloudz may seem like a strange match for touring partners, but here we are. United Palace is a lovely theatre, that’s for sure.

Bear in Heaven, Young Magic, Wife @ Bowery Ballroom
Brooklyn spacerockers Bear in Heaven wrap up their album Time is Over One Day Old with two NYC shows with Young Magic. This is the first.

Dita Von Teese @ Gramercy Theatre
Burlesque star Dita Von Teese hits NYC for five nights as part of her “Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray!” production.

John Mayall @ City Winery
Having fostered the talents of such folks as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood and others, John Mayall is British blues royalty.

Joell Ortiz & Friends @ S.O.B.’s
Slaughterhouse member Joell Ortiz is going solo this year with a new album, House Slippers, and tonight’s the release party for that. Guests are promised, and with the album including Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9, B.o.B., Mally Stakz, Lee Carr, Sahlance, Maino and Kaydence, it doesn’t seem out of the question that at least one of those will show up.

Seth Herzog’s SWEET @ Slipper Room
Having just celebrated its 10th annersary last week, Seth Herzog’s SWEET gets back to business as usual: being one of the most consistent comedy shows in the city.
