NYC’s multi-venue CBGB Festival wrapped up yesterday (10/12) after kicking off this past Wednesday (10/8). The fest doesn’t have too much to do with CBGB, but a few of the bands who played had played the actual venue back in the day, one of which was the legendary Devo. They played for free yesterday at 4:30 PM on a stage in Times Square located between a Starbucks and a Jamba Juice, with a car commercial looping on a megascreen behind them. That’s not exactly the kind of place you’d expect to see Devo (even if the culture clash was strangely appropriate), but those who could brave the Times Square crowds were treated to an excellent set. (And technically, it was Devo’s second Times Square show this year.) They only played ten songs, and kept things focused on their classic material (the newest song they played came out in 1982) with favorites such as “Girl U Want,” “Uncontrollable Urge,” “Mongoloid,” “Jocko Homo,” “Whip It,” “Beautiful World” and more. Sadly the band are no longer with original guitarist Bob Casale who passed away earlier this year, but regardless they were super tight, in great spirits and sounded terrific.

The show also included Jane’s Addiction and a few other bands. Stay tuned for pictures of Jane’s. More Devo pics (and one of Matt Pinfield who introduced them), a full set video, and their setlist, below…
