Downtown Boys

Their singer spent most of the time on the floor, and the other musicians often joined her. Meanwhile, a few crowd members (who the band appeared to know personally) spent the show dancing on stage. In between songs, the band preached equality for all genders, races and sexual orientations, and delivered these speeches in both Spanish and English. (She once pointed out how when she spoke in Spanish it was alienating to the non-Spanish speakers as an example of how many groups of people feel alienated in American society.) The band’s hi-speed, danceable saxophone-fueled punk was also a total party.

Providence’s Downtown Boys are one of those bands you just have to see live (I wrote the above when I saw them earlier this year), but the recordings are great too so it’s exciting to learn that they’ve signed to Don Giovanni for their debut album which will be out in 2015. That album will follow their 7″ that came out earlier this year on Sister Polygon, the label run by another Don Giovanni band, Priests.

UPDATE: Don Giovanni also signed Pinkwash and Mal Blum.

Downtown Boys are promising a summer tour for 2015, but as of now they only have two upcoming shows booked for November (none in NYC), including one with their new DG labelmates Screaming Females. Those dates are listed, with a stream of their 7″, below…

Downtown Boys — 2014 Tour Dates
