Hollie Cook is currently on her first US tour which kicked off on Monday (10/13) at Brooklyn’s Glasslands Gallery. With an easy smile and angelic voice, Cook charmed from the second she hit the stage, though the crowd (which included members of Steele Pulse and reggae percussion vet Larry McDonald) was clearly ready to be taken away. Opening with “Ari Up,” she and her able band played pretty much everything you’d want to hear from her two albums, as well as her cover of The Whispers’ disco hit “And the Beat Goes On.” She also made a nod to her roots — her parents are Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook and onetime Culture Club backup singer Jeni — by covering The Slits’ “Newtown” (she was a member of the last incarnation before Ari died). One qualm: the harmonies are so intrinsic to her sound, backup singers would’ve really taken the show over the top but Hollie Cook’s charisma carried the night.

The Glasslands show also featured dance act Rioux — clearly very talented musicians but in need of hooks/song structure — and the traditional reggae sounds of Brittany Campbell. Pictures from their sets, as well as more of Hollie’s, below…
