What's going on Wednesday? (CMJ, Courtney Barnett, Fat White Family, Literature, Nai Harvest, Creepoid & more)

Courtney Barnett in Chicago in February (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Courtney Barnett

Because of CMJ, we’re doing ‘What’s Going On’ slightly different this week. Each day there’s a handful of day shows which are listed first, followed by the night shows. With so many events happening each day, we’ve limited this to our top picks, but there’s a list of other good ones below the fold. And for even more of tonight’s shows, you can browse our full NYC show calendar.

DAY SHOWS

Tweens, PINS, Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires, PAWS @ Arlene’s Grocery
Between Tweens and PAWS, there’s no lack of scrappy, driving rock at this free Never Better day party. Manchester indie popsters PINS are cool too.

Future Punx, Popstrangers, Field Mouse, Flowers, Simian Ghost, Be Forest @ Cake Shop
The folks at Terrorbird publicity/promo have put together a very solid day party, with Italy’s moody dreampop band Be Forest, beguiling UK band Flowers, Brooklyn “post wave” partyband Future Punx and more. FREE.

The Ocean Blue, Happyness, Flowers, Beach Day, September Girls, Ultimate Painting, PAWS, Spring King, Girlpool, Literature, Splashh, Nai Harvest, Pinact, Seoul @ Pianos
Just a few doors down from Cake Shop is the Kanine Records party which takes over both floors of Pianos. Lovers of Britpop/indiepop/punkpop this is kind of a one-stop shop for some of the more interesting bands in that world at CMJ. Plus late ’80s college rock band The Ocean Blue, and BV’s Bill Pearis is DJing between bands from 5 – 7 PM.

Girlpool, Ronald Paris (Aaron Maine of Porches.), Caveman, Wampire, Splashh, Celestial Shore, Icewater, White Reaper, J Fernandez, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Tonstartssbandht, Sunflower Bean, Ryley Walker, Ultimate Painting @ Baby’s All Right
This is the “1st Annual CMJ Daycare Party” and we’re not sure what that means exactly but it’s hard to argue with this all-day-and-night free lineup of bands, including Caveman who can fill Webster Hall.

NIGHT SHOWS

Fat White Family at BV SXSW 2014 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Fat Whites

Creepoid, Ex-Breathers, Young Statues, UnWed, Palehound, Native America, Teen Death, Angel Dust @ Grand Victory
This is the Brixton Agency showcase which starts closer to daytime (5 PM) but goes through the night. It’s pretty stacked with hardcore band Ex-Breathers, indie rockers Young Statues, shoegazers Creepoid, punky rockers Teen Death and still more.

Elle Varner, Lia Ices, B.J. The Chicago Kid, Cayetana @ Le Poisson Rouge
NPR’s unofficial (free with RSVP, no badges) showcase is very varied this year. Elle Varner and BJ the Chicago Kid bring the R&B, Lia Ices brings the art pop, and Cayetana bring the guitar rock.

J Fernandez, White Reaper, PAWS, Modern Vices, CYMBALS, Literature, Megafortress, Itasca @ Cake Shop
There’s a handful of worthy artists on Cake Shop’s show tonight, including the guitar pop of J Ferndandez, the garage rock of the Polyvinyl-signed White Reaper, Glasgow fuzz popsters PAWS, self-proclaimed “dirty doo-wop” band Modern Vices, UK dance act CYMBALS, energetic indie popsters Literature, ambient pop artist Megafortress, and the psych folk of Itasca.

Jeff Rosenstock, The Bennies, Tweens, Dan Potthast @ Death By Audio
Former Bomb the Music Industry frontman Jeff Rosenstock still puts on fun shows with his solo band — he packed DbA over the summer and is sure to again tonight. If you’re going, poppy garage rockers Tweens are not to miss.

Turtle Giant, Be Forest, Native America, Sophie Hanlon @ DROM
Italian trio Be Forest are masters of mood, making swoony dreampop informed by the classics but very much in the now. The band released their second album, Earthbeat, earlier this year and if you like Slowdive, ’80s-era 4AD and modern stuff like The xx, you definitely should check it out.

Fat White Family, Bo Ningen, Public Access TV, Twin Peaks, Happyness, The Wytches, Girlpool @ Glasslands
UK music mag NME and the Hate Hate Hate label are throwing this stacked party with the debaucherous (and possibly naked) psych rockers Fat White Family, the wild Bo Ningen who defy genres and are a sight to see, the UK-hyped rockers Public Access TV, raucous Chicago garage rockers Twin Peaks, ’90s-style indie rockers Happyness, psych/garage rockers The Wytches, and LA lo-fi duo Girlpool. A pretty good bill all-around.

Reigning Sound, White Fence, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Shonen Knife, Guy Blakeslee (of Entrance Band), Ice Balloons, Ultimate Painting @ Knitting Factory
The most exciting part of this Panache showcase is it’s the only chance during CMJ to see the Reigning Sound, but it’s otherwise stacked from top to bottom with other great bands too.

Alkaline Trio, Murderburgers @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Grim but melodic punks Alkaline Trio have eight records ranging from pretty good to pretty great, and they’ll be playing two in full at each night of this 4-night run at MHOW (it won’t be announced which albums are which night). This is night 2, and though all four shows fall during CMJ, they’re not part of the fest.

Wish, Doomsquad, Beliefs, Lobby, Blonde Elvis, The Dirty Nil, Dead Leaf Echo @ Palisades
Toronto label Hand Drawn Dracula brings together a mostly Canadian lineup with some of more interesting underground indie rock going on North of the border, including ’90s-leaning Wish, the glammy Blonde Elvis, punkish trio The Dirty Nil, shoegazy Beliefs and more.

Lia Mice, Lost Boy?, Yawn, Shark?, Dead Stars, Radical Dads @ Pianos Upstairs
Folks from out of town looking to get a good dose of Brooklyn’s best practitioners of old school, ’90s-style indie rock, well here you go: Shark?, Dead Stars and Radical Dads do it as good as any.

Secret Chiefs 3, Atomic Ape @ Saint Vitus
Mr. Bungle member Trey Spruance leads the instrumental experimental rock collective Secret Chiefs 3, whose tour hits NYC for its second of two shows here this week (during but not part of CMJ).

Tonstartssbandht, TOPS, Moon King, Calvin Love, Nicholas Nicholas @ Shea Stadium
If the Palisades show didn’t offer enough Canadians, head to Shea to catch Moon King’s only CMJ show (they’re great), TOPS (danceable ’80s-ish pop), the suave Calvin Love and arty and hard-to-pronounce headliners Tonstartssbandht.

Bombay Bicycle Club, Milo Greene, Luxley @ Terminal 5
Bombay Bicycle Club have changed it up on every album so far, and this year’s So Long, See You Tomorrow may be their best yet. This big show is part of CMJ, but you might want to get there early if you’re trying to use a badge to get in.

Tune In Tel Aviv @ Leftfield
Oleh! Records (“Israel’s Music Export) is presenting the return of their Tune In Tel Aviv showcase this year, which is represented by the country of Israel and features Israeli artists Kokoro, Dorine Levy, Skyroads and Snir Yamin.

Slingshot Dakota, Koji, Creepoid, Off & On, Meghann Wright @ The Acheron
This is the City Lights/INSRGNT-[Arts]/T3M Showcase, and it’s the only CMJ show for the energetic Mates of States-y duo Slingshot Dakota. Philly shoegazers Creepoid are not to be missed either.

Bosco, Okay Kaya, Dark Waves, Go Back To The Zoo, TOPS, Flowers @ The Delancey
Both UK band Flowers (gentle and jangly) and Monteal’s TOPS (’80s-ish soft rock, in a good way) are worth catching…they also both play a ton of shows this week.

Cakes Da Killa (w/ Astrolith), Money Mark (and TT), DDM (w/ Normaling), JuiceBox, Ami Dang, Ponyo @ The Flat
NYC rapper Cakes Da Killa delivers killer rhymes over equally killer production — fans of Mykki Blanco or Danny Brown should dig. Beastie Boys collaborator/Atomic Bomb! member Money Mark should be interesting as well.

Guy Blakeslee (of Entrance Band), LA Witch, Prince Rupert’s Drops, Paperhead, Worthless @ Union Pool
Psych-heavy label Beyond Beyond is Beyond always put together a good showcase, and this is no exception with Nashville’s The Paperhead, West Coast punks LA Witch, local band Prince Rupert’s Drops and more. Plus: Drippy Eye Projections will make the place feel like the Fillmore East. Groooovy.

San Fermin, Courtney Barnett, Mikhael Paskalev @ Webster Hall
While Courtney Barnett played several small CMJ shows last year, this time the wordy Aussie folkie is back for just one larger show, a co-headlining gig with San Fermin.

The Allman Brothers Band @ Beacon Theatre
The current lineup of The Allman Brothers Band has had a very long and impressive run, but sadly the band has chosen to retire at the end of this month. They’ll go out with a bang though, with six shows in eight nights at the Beacon, this being the second.

Buster Poindexter @ Cafe Carlyle
For something completely different (and not part of CMJ), David Johansen puts back on the tux and Buster Poindexter persona for a night of cabaret.
