What's going on Friday? (BV day party, Protomartyr, TWIABP, Virus, Amen Dunes, Mitski, James, Woods, Wye Oak & more)

CMJ

Protomartyr in Chicago in July (more by James Richards IV)
Protomartyr

TWIABP at NYU Strawberry Fest in May (more by Chris La Putt)
TWIABP

Because of CMJ, we’re doing ‘What’s Going On’ slightly different this week. Each day there’s a handful of day shows which are listed first, followed by the night shows. With so many events happening each day, we’ve limited this to our top picks, but there’s a list of other good ones below the fold. And for even more of tonight’s shows, you can browse our full NYC show calendar.

DAY SHOWS

Twin Peaks, Single Mothers, The World is a Beautiful Place & I’m No Longer Afraid To Die, Protomartyr, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Tweens, The Wytches, Dilly Dally @ Baby’s All Right (BrooklynVegan Day Party)
There’s a lot of cool stuff today, but of course we hope you make it over to our free day party which goes from noon-7PM and features raucous garage rockers Twin Peaks, sneering punks Single Mothers, post-rocky emo band TWIABP, smart and highly quotable post-punks Protomartyr, Australian psych party King Gizzard, garage popsters Tweens, psych/garage rockers The Wytches, and the NYC debut of Toronto lo-fi rock band Dilly Dally. Sailor Jerry will have free tattoos and complimentary beverages, and Bell’s Brewery will be selling a variety of their craft beers, plus they’ll have a free keg while it lasts. Plus: Baby’s kitchen is open serving their happy hour menu all day. Hope to see you there!

Concord America, CYMBALS, Wampire, White Fence @ Arlene’s Grocery
UK band CYMBALS make dancerock akin to Hotchip adn they do it pretty well; Wampire’s brand of indie dips into ’70s yacht rock; and White Fence channel ’60s garage and paisley pop. Not a bad day show choice at all.

Popstrangers, Literature, White Reaper, Flowers, DOTT, Monomyth, Dinosaur Feathers @ Cake Shop
Hard to go wrong at Cake Shop today with such acts as Philadelphia’s hyperactive janglers Literature, much-buzzed-about UK trio Flowers, Irish indiepop band DOTT, Halifax, NS quartet Monomyth and more.

Splashh, The Wytches, PINS,PAWS, Beverly, Solander @ Knitting Factory
Part of Culture Collide Festival, this day party is another good option to catch some of CMJ’s busiest bands, including across-the-pond acts Splashh, The Wytches, PINS and PAWS, not to mention Brooklyn’s own Beverly.

Dune Rats, Monomyth, Go Back To The Zoo, Liam Bailey, Delta Riggs, Bad//Dreems, Big Harp, Future Loves Past, Taymir, Lay Low, Gossling, Lydia Ainsworth, Go Wolf, Hundreds, Eden Mulholland, Monokino @ Pianos
There’s some cool stuff on this show including Australian garage punks Dune Rats, Canadian power/indie popsters Monomyth and the new age-y Lydia Ainsworth.

James, Oscar, Pinact, September Girls @ Rough Trade
Manchester vets James just played Webster Hall, now you can see them in what’s probably the smallest show they’ve played in eons. It was already a good option with Pinact and September Girls. Free and all-ages.

Comfy, Bad Cello, Running in the Fog, Adult Mom, Bethlehem Steel, Small Wonder, Flagland, Attic Abasement, Mitski, Rivergazer, Girlpool, Amanda X, Jawbreaker Reunion, Bent Shapes, Nicholas Nicholas, Sharpless, Moon Bounce, Leapling, Vagabond @ Silent Barn (Day & Night)
This all day and night (2 PM – 2 AM) Miscreant x Father/Daughter party is unofficial (but only $5) and features a stacked lineup from lo-fi introverts like Small Wonder and Adult Mom to indie rockers like Amanda X, Jawbreaker Reunion and Bent Shapes, to the arty pop of Mitski and Sharpless, and hyped LA duo Girlpool.

Foxes in Fiction, Mister Lies, Emily Reo, R.L. Kelly, Yohuna @ The Shop
This is a good bill of DIY pop ranging from electronic sounds to sparse acoustic guitars.

Potty Mouth, Flashlights, Beach Day, Honduras, Boytoy, Beverly, Las Rosas, Sun Club, Dilly Dally @ The Studio at Webster Hall
There’s a lot of cool stuff on this showcase: the punky pop of Potty Mouth and Flashlights, the indie pop of Beach Day, Honduras and Las Rosas, and the scrappy rock of Dilly Dally.

NIGHT SHOWS

Virus
VIrus

Virus, Krallice, Sannhet, Couch Slut @ Saint Vitus
Insanely weird Norwegian metal band Virus are coming to Saint Vitus for a two-night stand beginning tonight, and both shows have great openers. This one is black metallers Krallice, post-metal/post-rockers Sannhet, and noisy hardcore band Couch Slut.

Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Bruce Willis, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Jimmy Heath, Charles Bradley, Matthew Whitaker, Steve Jordan, Jorge Luis Pacheco @ Apollo Theater
It’s the 13th Annual “A Great Night in Harlem” benefitting “countless elder jazz and blues musicians in crisis across the country.” Tonight’s honoree is Herbie Hancock with a host of amazing talent — plus Bruce Willis — on hand for performances.

The Muscadettes, Vesuvio Solo, The Posterz, Homeshake, Lydia Ainsworth, Tei Shi, Allie, Eman, Lisa LeBlanc, Solids, Heat @ Arlene’s Grocery
It’s M for Montreal’s annual CMJ blowout at Arlene’s Grocery, with a bunch of great Canadian talent. Go early for free poutine (if you eat that), stay late (really late) to catch The Muscadettes close out the night at 3:30 AM.

Purling Hiss, OBN IIIs, Hunters, Calvin Love, Meatbodies, Dune Rats, Happyness, Homeshake @ Baby’s All Right
Panache Booking brings some of its roster to Baby’s All Right tonight, including one of shouldn’t-be-missed OBN-IIIs few CMJ performances. The whole bill is solid though.

Frankie Cosmos, Flowers, Beverly, September Girls, Only Real, DJ Andy Nystrom (PWN), DJ Lio Kanine @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Kanine Records is throwing this free show at Williamsburg entertainment/shopping destination with a great bunch of indie pop bands (make sure you see Flowers this week). RSVP to skip the line.

The World is a Beautiful Place & I’m No Longer Afraid To Die, Empire! Empire!, Field Mouse, Wildhoney, Sorority Noise @ Cameo Gallery
Topshelf’s showcase (presented by Washed Up Emo) is good as usual this year with the lushly layered TWIABP, the raw and inward-looking Empire! Empire!, the alt-pop of Field Mouse, the shoegaze of Wildhoney, and the crunchy pop of Sorority Noise.

Protomartyr, Creepoid, Love as Laughter, Eaters, Special Guest @ Death By Audio
If you’re visiting from out of town, this is a good night to visit one of Williamsburg’s best venue’s Death By Audio which is set to close in less than a month. Headliners Protomartyr were great here back in the Spring, and the whole line-up is rock-solid.

Blue Hawaii, Ballet School, Lydia Ainsworth @ Glasslands
Montreal’s Blue Hawaii make skittering, ethereal electronic music on record but live it’s a little more of a dance party. Also of note: fellow Arbutus artist Lydia Ainsworth whose classically trained background makes for complex, orchestral pop.

Zola Jesus, DJ Dodger Stadium, Dave P, Sammy Slice @ Le Bain
Zola Jesus’s sound and stage show was excellent at Webster Hall earlier this week. Tonight she may have to scale things down performance-wise, but it’s a great chance to see her in a much more intimate location.

First Aid Kit, Samantha Crain @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Swedish duo First Aid Kit make more of their quality folk pop on this year’s Stay Gold. They were already in NYC around its release date and now they’re back for round 2 (not part of CMJ).

Boytoy, Little Racer, Tennis System, Weekender, Suburban Living, The Muscadettes, Gal Pals, Needle Points @ Lit
Comprised of twin sisters Chantal and Kathleen Ambridge (plus a drummer live), Montreal’s Muscadettes make super-catchy, riffy rock with shouty choruses and hooks a’plenty.

Mexican Golden Girls, DMA’s, Bear’s Den, Peter Matthew Bauer, Little May, Chief Scout, Colony House @ Mercury Lounge
The Paradigm Agency’s CMJ showcase is highlighted by former Walkmen bassist Peter Matthew Bauer who makes is own fine gritty, heartland style indie rock. Stay late for DJ duo Mexican Golden Girls.

Alkaline Trio, Skeleton Key @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Grim but melodic punks Alkaline Trio have eight records ranging from pretty good to pretty great, and they’ll be playing two in full at each night of this 4-night run at MHOW (it won’t be announced which albums are which night). This is night 4, and though all four shows fall during CMJ, they’re not part of the fest.

Wye Oak, Joshua Light Show / Woods, Joshua Light Show @ NYU Skirball Center
Using old-school psychedelic “liquid light” projections, Joshua Light Show has been bringing a visual element to pop music since the mid’60s and his team do incredible things. This three-day festival continues with two separate shows: Baltimore’s anthemic Wye Oak, and then Woods whose style should fit in with JLS’ visuals well. Not part of CMJ.

Wolvves, Glass Gang, Sunflower Bean, Bo Ningen, Baby Alpaca, Bowmont, MOTHXR, Eddi Front, The Yum Dee Days, Fascinator, Shilpa Ray, Altopalo, Waltz, Vandana Jain, Girlpool, Fielded @ Pianos
You can catch some of the most talked-about CMJ bands (Girlpool, Bo Ningen) at the Deli Magazine showcase.

Kevin Morby, Chris Forsyth,Twin Peaks, Springtime Carnivore, Modern Vices, Ryley Walker, Geronimo Getty @ Rough Trade
So many CMJ shows to choose from, but this is another good one with ubertalented former Woods/Babies dude Kevin Morby, pych folk singer Ryley Walker, and Chicago’s raucous Twin Peaks. And more!

PAWS, Solids, Heat, Meat Wave, Washer @ Shea Stadium
This is the Ipsum/Heavy Trip showcase and it’s pretty stacked, with two quality fuzz pop bands — PAWS and Solids — plus Heat, Meat Wave and Washer, who all fit the bill well.

Be Forest, The Flag, Kindling, DOTT, Lia Mice, Night Powers, Curelight Wounds @ The Gutter
The good folks at Gimme Tinitus and Mirror Universe Tapes have put together this quality showcase at The Gutter’s backroom, with Italy’s shoegazy (in an ’80s 4AD way) Be Forest, and Ireland’s charming DOTT amongst its highlights.

Moon Duo, Amen Dunes, Marissa Nadler, Dream Police @ Trans-Pecos
Sacred Bones’ showcase is good start to finish with The Men-related experimental duo Dream Police, dream folk singer Marissa Nadler, psych folk band Amen Dunes, and psych rock band Moon Duo.

Krill, Ex-Breathers, Lost Boy?, Flagland, Kal Marks, Dirty Dishes, Two Inch Astronaut, Geronimo! @ Trash Bar
If you’ve been to an Exploding In Sound party before, you know every band goes hard and the fans reciprocate. With such a good chunk of the family on the bill tonight, that’s sure to be the case again

The Allman Brothers Band @ Beacon Theatre
The current lineup of The Allman Brothers Band has had a very long and impressive run, but sadly the band has chosen to retire at the end of this month. They’ll go out with a bang though, with six shows in eight nights at the Beacon.

Restorations, Self Defense Family, Brian McGee, Ghost House @ Asbury Lanes
Restorations’ new record has them doing the kind of blue collar rock we’ve gotten from The Gaslight Anthem and The Menzingers, and it’s easily their best yet. Self Defense Family on the other hand, play a type of forward-thinking post-hardcore that changes on every release. SDF play NYC tomorrow and Restorations will do so in November, but here’s a good chance to catch the two bands together in the area.

Deniro Farrar, Denzel Curry, Remy @ Marlin Room at Webster Hall
There’s not too much in the way of exciting hip hop at CMJ this year, but Deniro Farrar is undoubtedly one of the best options.
