What's going on Friday? (Halloween Parade, Primus, Damned, King Gizzard, Hop Along, Meat Puppets, cover shows, more)
King Gizzard at BV-CMJ last week (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Hop Along at Wicker Park Fest 2014 (more by Jeff Ryan)
You can browse our full NYC show calendar and our 2014 Halloween guide for more of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
The 41st Village Halloween Parade, which gives parades a good name, is a NYC Halloween tradition and a great way to start the night. It happens on 6th Avenue North of Spring Street to 16th Street from 7 PM – 10:30 PM. And if you can’t actually be there, NY1 broadcasts live from 8 PM – 9:30 PM.
The Damned, TSOL, The Briefs @ Irving Plaza
With a singer who has basically dressed like a vampire for the band’s career and classic singles “Thanks for the Night,” “Wait for the Blackout,” and “In Dulce,”The Damned remain perfectly suited for this sort of thing.
Diarrhea Planet, Hop Along, Girlpool, Desert Sharks, Mitski, Banker$ @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
This is a pretty amazing lineup, not to mention it’s free and goes late (til 1 AM). There’s the raging garage punks Diarrhea Planet, Saddle Creek’s new signees Hop Along, lyrical LA duo Girlpool, chamber pop-turned-lo-fi songwriter Mitski, and leather jacket rockers Desert Sharks. Plus there’s a costume contest with a $500 cash prize, face painting and more tonight.
Purling Hiss, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Meatbodies, Tonstartssbandht @ 338 Moffat
CMJ buds Panache & Baby’s All Right are thowing a Halloween Show that’s not at Baby’s — it happens Halloween Friday at 338 Moffat (Studio L) with with a bunch of CMJ bands who’re still around, including tourmates Purling Hiss and Meatbodies.
Maurice Fulton, DJ Spun, Alex From Tokyo @ Baby’s All Right
While Baby’s All Right are presenting the garage rock show at 338 Moffat, the actual venue will be hosting a dance party that night.
Pop. 1280, Void Vision, Pawns, Frankie Teardrop (DJ set), and more! @ Emet Part Deux
For those in a modern goth mood, this show features a skeleton handful of bands clearly in debt to the darker postpunk sounds.
This Will Destroy You, Future Death, Silent Land Time Machine @ Bowery Ballroom
This Will Destroy You are back with their fourth album, Another Language, which is more of their soaring post-rock. For some people, this is the only way to spend Halloween.
Knyfe Hyts, Oozing Wound, The Fucking Ocean, Red Dawn II, Alien Whale, Aa, Justin Frye, Chat Logs @ Death By Audio
It’s the last ever Halloween at Death by Audio and they’re celebrating in style with two rooms. The main room has the re-active Knyfe Hyts, thrashers Oozing Wound (their second DbA show this week), The Fucking Ocean, Red Dawn II and Alien Whale. And another room called the “Haunted Mansion” will be open tonight with synth experimenters Aa, PC Worship’s Justin Frye and Chat Logs. The show is over at 12:30 AM and then the “Haunted Mansion” starts at 1 AM.
Meat Puppets, Cass McCombs @ Rough Trade
It’s the first night of Meat Puppets and Cass McCombs’ co-headlining two-night stand at Rough Trade. The Meat Puppets go on last tonight, and bring over three decades of their influential alternative rock. Cass is a bit newer but he’s also excellent and a great fit.
Mastodon, Gojira, Kvelertak @ The Paramount
This incredible triple bill has Savannah sludge masters Mastodon, French death metallers Gojira, and Norwegian party animals Kvelertak. They played Terminal 5 earlier this year and this weekend they’re back for two more shows in the area. Tomorrow they play NJ.
The Presets, Antwon, Chela, Franki Chan @ Warsaw
The Check Yo Ponytail tour stops in NYC tonight with an eclectic double bill of Australian synth pop band The Presets and experimental rapper Antwon. Opening is another Australian, Chela, and Check Yo Ponytail alumnus Franki Chan.
World Inferno Friendship Society @ The Wick
Punk/klezmer/cabaret act World Inferno Friendship Society are throwing this so-called “Hallowmas” bash. They are requesting you bring a pumpkin.
Anamanaguchi (DJ), Jack Donoghue (of Salem), Tallesen, Pleasure Centers, Bernard Herman @ Bathhouse
“Witch House,” as a genre, didn’t last very long but catch one of its leading lights (Jack from Salem) DJ tonight with a set from 8-bitters Anamanaguchi as well.
Matrixxman, Physical Therapy, Michael Magnan, Max McFerren @ Secret Location
This stacked dance party is at a secret location that was emailed to you if you bought a ticket. Unfortunately, sold out.
Primus @ Beacon Theatre
While not strictly a Halloween show, this is being billed as “An Evening With Primus and the Chocolate Factory.” Primus just made an album based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book which definitely has some nightmare material in it.
