Sallie Ford has a new band and album, on tour with Crooked Fingers, playing NYC tonight (dates & LP stream)

Perhaps most noticeably, the new lineup–Cristina Cano on keys, Anita Lee Elliott on bass, and Amanda Spring on drums–is all women. Ford describes the choice as a “daydream,” not a statement so much as the simple fulfillment of a wish to make music with other women.

“Now I feel a little silly about it because that’s all people are talking about. That we’re all girls,” admits Ford. “And I think it especially gets on the nerves of the girl musicians I’m playing with because I think they’ve [each] been struggling their whole music careers to be labeled as just ‘a musician who is really awesome,’ and not just because they’re a girl.” [The Artery]

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside called it quits late last year, but singer Sallie Ford has struck out on her own and is now backed by an all-new lineup (more on that above). Sallie’s first album under her own name, Slap Back, was produced by The Decemberists’ Chris Funk and came out this past October via Vanguard Records. You can check out a stream of the whole thing (via Popmatters) below.

Sallie and her new band are on the road now with Crooked Fingers, the solo project of Archers of Loaf singer Eric Bachmann. That tour lands in NYC TONIGHT (11/14) at Rough Trade. Opening this show and most others is Northampton’s And the Kids. Tickets for tonight’s show are available.
