Pampers, Honey, New England Patriots, Nandas @ Death by Audio
Pampers and Honey kick off their tours tonight, both band’s last shows at DbA (which has less than two weeks left). Pampers’ intense art-punk always sounds best at the DIY venue.
Waxahatchee, Allison Crutchfield, Radiator Hospital @ Le Poisson Rouge
Waxahatchee are going on tour with Jenny Lewis and are playing this warm-up show tonight with Swearin’s Allison Crutchfield (Katie’s twin sister and former PS Eliot/Bad Banana bandmate) and Radiator Hospital (the project of former Waxahatchee bassist Sam Cook). Sold out.
Tame Impala, Delicate Steve @ Beacon Theatre
Australian psych band Tame Impala make an appealing bombast, striking that fine balance between weird and poppy. It’s been two years since their breakthrough Lonerisms, but a live album was released earlier this year. You can, of course, see them tonight live in person.
Daniel Lanois, The Antlers, Tinariwen, Lonnie Holley @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple
Musician and megaproducer Daniel Lanois put together this concert, called ‘ANTI-Thesis,’ featuring a wide range of artists. Says Lanois: “It’s a dream come true to welcome artists from different walks of life to share one stage. Let this be the beginning of something that should never stop, music is the universal language.”
Robyn Hitchcock @ City Winery
For Robyn Hitchcock’s new album, The Man Upstairs, he worked with legendary British folk producer Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Etc). Boyd suggested that Hitchcock make “a Judy Collins album,” such as Elektra would have released in in the late ’60s, with a mix of originals and covers, all in a spare acoustic style that showcases Hitchcock’s skill with the frets and his nicely aged voice. Live, Hitchcock is always entertaining live, with his between-song stories part of the appeal.
Stars, Hey Rosetta! @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The ’80s are apparent on Stars’ new album, from the roller-rink cover art to the new wave/electro influence of the songs — which still have that anthemic sound they’re known for — this time around.
James Vincent McMorrow, Moors @ Town Hall
Initially drawing comparisons to Bon Iver, Irish singer-songwriter took his falsetto-tinged folk in more soulful, ambient electronic directions for his latest album, Post Tropical.
Antemasque @ Rough Trade
Antemasque, the new band from Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler Zavala (At The Drive-In & The Mars Volta), just played Brooklyn Bowl and Bowery Ballroom, and now have added a free show at Rough Trade, no purchase required.
Nels Cline Singers @ Rough Trade
Best known these days for being in Wilco, Nels Cline’s guitar talents are many-fold. Tonight he performs two sets with his free-jazz instrumental trio, Nels Cline Singers.
Seu Jorge @ Blue Note
Best known here in America for acting in City of God and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (which he scored using only acoustic, Portuguese David Bowie covers), but Brazilian artist Seu Jorge has been making music since the ’90s. This is part of his eight-night run at the Blue Note.
FKA Twigs, Boots @ Warsaw
With her modern update of trip hop, FKA Twigs has been a fast riser with her debut album receiving pretty much across-the-board accolades. She’s quite the dancer, too.
Night Train @ Littlefield
Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams guest host tonight, with sets from comedians Byron Bowers, Matteo Lane, Shakir Standley, and Alingon Mitra.
