Nick Lowe, Los Straightjackets @ Bowery Ballroom
You may remember that Nick Lowe released holiday album, Quality Street, last year. He’ll be in the spirit again this year, here for two shows, this being the first.
Wrekmeister Harmonies @ Signal
This year, JR Robinson released a new work with his experimental metal project Wrekmeister Harmonies called Then It All Came Down. Tonight, JR’s performing the piece live in NYC with a killer collective that includes members of Slint, Om/Grails, Indian, Liturgy, Bloodliest and more.
Crocodiles, Spacin’, Cassie Ramone, Dee Dee (DJ) @ Glasslands
The Glasslands goodbye shows continue, tonight being California transplants Crocodiles who channel JAMC/Spacemen 3 vibes with pop smarts. Dee Dee from Dum Dum Girls will be your DJ for the evening.
Black Breath, Mutilation Rites, White Widows Pact, Blackest @ Saint Vitus
Black Breath fuse together the sounds of death ‘n roll and early crossover thrash into a mix that’s pretty much whiplash-inducing the whole time. Support comes from a few NYC bands, including local black metal faves Mutilation Rites.
Justin Timberlake @ Barclays Center
As far as pop stars go, few push musical boundaries like Justin Timberlake, whether he’s delivering still-futuristic sex love sounds, beating alt-R&B at its own game, or honoring classic pop singers of the past with the choice of covers he works into his sets.
John Waters @ City Winery
If your perspective on the holidays is a little more cynical, chances are John Waters’ annual Christmas show will be more up your chimney.
Sunflower Bean, The Due Diligence, Honduras, Happy Lives, Cosmonaut, granny, Holy Tunics @ Baby’s All Right
The nice folks at 1.21 Giggawatts have put together this brunchtime show featuring a whole bunch of very good local bands. Drink a bloody mary, catch some music. $5.
Narcissister, Shannon Funchess, Bunny Michael, Melanie Bonajo, People At Parties, Bottoms @ Baby’s All Right
This is the second installment of NIGHTSOIL a “Musical Celebration of Our Sexual Psychedelic Power, Uniting the Feminine and the Masculine” featuring a host of performers to “spread love, new perspective, and challenge systematic inequality by UNITING TOGETHER.”
Nude Beach, JP5, Shocked Minds @ Union Pool
Nude Beach returned this year with 77, another dose of their rockin’ power pop that sounds like it could’ve come right out of ’77. Support comes from two other local rock n roll crews.
Heaters, The Mystery Lights, Savants @ Mercury Lounge
Grand Rapids, MI psych band Heaters fall on the groovy side of the garage, making dancefloor-friendly party rock. Catch them tonight with terrific local band The Mystery Lights.
Invisible Familiars, Sweepstakes @ Union Pool
New York singer songwriter Jared Samuel, who has played with Cibo Matto and Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, is behind Invisible Familiars. His music is quirky, poppy and danceable as you’ll be able to hear when Invisible Familiars’ debut album comes out next month via Other Music. This is a free afternoon show (2 PM) in Union Pool’s front room.
The Wonder Years, State Champs, Have Mercy, Transit, Candy Hearts, Man Overboard, Crime in Stereo, No Good News, Front Porch Step, Handguns, Light Years, Seaway, Head North, The Sixties, Young and Heartless @ Webster Hall
While pop punk has been having a bit of a resurgence in indie rock lately, this lineup is very POP punk, not exactly Japandroids or anything. That said, there’s a few cool outliers on this bill like melodic hardcore band Crime In Stereo and post-hardcore up-and-comers Young & Heartless. And if you like this pop punk stuff at all, few bands do it better than The Wonder Years.
