You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Soulside, Sweet Jesus @ Saint Vitus
Before there was Girls Against Boys, members of that band were in Dischord/DC post-hardcore band Soulside, who broke up back in 1989 but have influenced a ton of bands since. Now they’re back and tonight’s their second of two NYC shows at Saint Vitus (both sold out). Opening is Sweet Jesus, who feature members of Have Heart, Verse, Dropdead and Soul Control, and are a pretty good fit.

Opeth, In Flames, Red Fang @ Terminal 5
Metal vets Opeth continued their trek into straight up progressive rock on this year’s Pale Communion. Tonight they play the big Terminal 5 with Swedish DMers In Flames and Portland riffers Red Fang.

Walter Martin, Kat Edmonson @ Joe’s Pub
Having released holiday single “I Walk So Slow (Under The Mistletoe),” together Walter Martin (of Walkmen) and Kat Edmonson will now celebrate the season with a festive show.

Real Estate, Shorts @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Real Estate cap off a very busy year with this free show presented by Converse Rubber Tracks. All free tickets have been claimed already, natch.

Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Loudon Wainwright III, Justin Vivian Bond, Cibo Matto, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Sloan Wainwrigh @ Town Hall
Rufus & Martha Wainwright are celebrating the holiday shows with two shows at Town Hall this week, this being the second. The lineup is loaded with diverse and impressive names including much of the Wainwright family, country singer Emmylou Harris, NYC indie vets Cibo Matto, and the long-active all-around great performer Justin Vivian Bond.

Ice Choir, Maxo, DV-i @ Cameo Gallery
With his current project Ice Choir, Kurt Feldman (TPOBPAH, Depreciation Guild) uncannily recreates ’80s new romantic synthpop. Tonight’s a release show celebrating their new “Pure Holiday” single.

Maxo, Life Size Maps, Limited, Visuals @ Baby’s All Right
Fans of Ice Choir might be a little torn tonight, as Limited (aka Alex Craig of Big Troubles and Ducktails) is working in the same millieu, and tonight’s show also features Maxo who is also playing tonight’s show at Cameo.

Delicate Steve, Celestial Shore, Jason Bartell (of Fang Island) @ Glasslands
Glasslands has less than two weeks left, and tonight you can check out an excellent lineup of indie rock bands that all exude instrumental technique. Go while you can.

The Black Madonna, Jacques Renault @ Glasslands
The string of final Glasslands shows continues late tonight after the Delicate Steve show with Jacques Renault’s ‘Let’s Play House’ party, which has called the Williamsburg venue home many times.

Mitski, Bellows, Small Wonder, 100 Watt Horse @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Mitski’s latest album, Bury Me At Makeout Creek, has made her one of the local Brooklyn scene’s more exciting new artists, and it’s gotten a bit of year-end acclaim. Tonight she plays with two bands in the talented Epoch collective, Bellows and Small Wonder, as well as 100 Watt Horse.

Nels Cline Ring Nebula Project, Ava Mendoza’s Unnatural Ways, Cactus Truck, Cloud Becomes Your Hand @ Trans-Pecos
Two impressive avant-guitarists, Nels Cline and Ava Mendoza, lead bands for tonight’s show. Also on the bill is Cactus Truck (from the Netherlands) and one of NYC’s better experimental pop bands, Cloud Becomes Your Hand.

Nashville Pussy, Valient Thorr, Against The Grain @ Gramercy Theatre
Nashville Pussy and Valient Thorr bring a double dose of southern heavy metal and partying to Gramercy Theatre tonight. Beers shall be flung.

Har Mar Superstar, Jim Jones, Michael Cummings (of Skaters) @ Bowery Electric
This is the holiday edition of party ‘Sally Can’t Dance’ featuring a host of cool guest appearances, including Har Mar and Jim Jones, plus DJs Jesse Malin and Alix Brown.

Talibam!, Matt Nelson, Brian Chase, robbie l, Adam Starbucks @ Manhattan Inn
Longrunning Brooklyn duo Talibam! headline this night of experimental/drone/noise that also features Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase. Free, though donations are suggested.

Krill, Palberta, Big Neck Police, Show Me The Body, Big Neck Police @ Shea Stadium
Krill’s third album, A Distant Fist Unclenching, is coming out on February 17 via Exploding In Sound / Double Double Whammy, and its new single “Torturer” is another good example of their Spencer Krug meets Western Mass-style rock. You can stream it below.

Pilot to Gunner, Bound and Buried, The Judas Knife, Our Skies Are Noise @ The Acheron
Early 2000s-era post-hardcore band Pilot to Gunner were inactive for a while, but lately they’ve been anything but. Here’s another chance to catch them in their hometown.

John Hodgman @ Grand Masonic Lodge
John Hodgman hosts his monthly Secret Society Meeting, this time given a subtitle, “Public Holiday Spectacle.” Note though previous Secret Society meetings have been at Union Hall, this is at the Grand Masonic Lodge in the Flatiron District.
