What's going on New Year's Eve? (Erasure, Quicksand, Rainer Maria, Disclosure, A$AP Ferg, The Hold Steady, Holy Ghost!, Mykki Blanco, Kid Congo, Glasslands' final night & more)

NYE

Happy New Year’s Eve! There are many many cool shows going on in NYC tonight. Yo can check out our New Year’s Eve Roundup for a big rundown of tonight’s shows, and browse our full NYC show calendar for even more. Here are the ones we’re most excited about…

Erasure, Book of Love @ Terminal 5
With a bucketload of synthpop hits, Vince Clarke and Andy Bell hit NYC for to ring in the new year. Expect extra glitz and glamour in the duo’s already spectacular stage show. Their ’80s Sire Records labelmates book of Love open.

Holy Ghost!, Museum of Love, That Work @ Irving Plaza
It’s a very DFA New Year’s Eve with Holy Ghost!’s early-’80s Danceteria-imbued beats and Pat Mahoney’s surprisingly soulful new band, Museum of Love.

!!!, Prince Rama, Cakes da Killa @ Knitting Factory
On a similar tip, !!! will remind you that their early-’00s brand of dancepunk still sounds great; Prince Rama will do their best align your chakras beforehand.

Peaking Lights, Joubert Singers @ Good Room
While still retaining their love of dub, duo Peaking Lights went pop (or as much as they can) on their new album, Cosmic Logic, which has them somewhat like a modern day Tom Tom Club. Live they’re still all about the bass (and smoke machines).

Obits, Dead Stars, Tournament @ Acheron
While once known for being members of other groups (Drive Like Jehu, Edsel), Obits have an established career of their own now, with three albums of terrific, no-nonsense rock n’ roll on Sub Pop.

Mykki Blanco, Mr. Twin Sister, Perfect Pussy, Ricky Eat Acid, Ronald Paris, Sunflower Bean, James K, Dubbel Dutch, MR UNO (DJ), Chances with Wolves @ Baby’s All Right
There’s a little something for everyone at Baby’s second NYE show, featuring a mix of dance, rock, punk and hip hop…plus a host of DJs keeping the party going in all corners.

“Special Guests” @ Glasslands
It’s the last night of Glasslands stay on Kent Ave, and they’re going out with a bang. The show’s sold out but the line-up is still a mystery but we imagine they’ve got some good bands playing. Say goodbye to 2014, Glasslands and DIY venues on that once-hopping block. If you didn’t get tickets, you can still stop by around 2 AM once the music is over.

Kid Congo Powers & the Pink Monkey Birds, Andy Animal’s All Male Revue, PMS and the Moodswings, DJs Jonathan Toubin and Josh Styles @ Home Sweet Home
It’s the New York Night Train New Year’s Eve Party with your host Jonathan Toubin who will also be spinning records. Before the ball drops, there will be live sets from Kid Congo, Andy Animal and Habibi offshoot PMS & the Moodswings.

Skrillex, Diplo, A$AP Ferg, Rudimental (DJ), Yellow Claw @ MSG
Even if Skrillex isn’t your thing and you wish Diplo would stop working with him, it’s pretty undeniable that this show is gonna be a huge party, and A$AP Ferg playing anywhere on New Year’s Eve makes it worthwhile for that alone.

Kiesza (live), Gorgon City, Ryan Hemsworth, Duke Dumont, Claude VonStroke @ Webster Hall
Webster Hall is throwing a huge party to ring in the new year, using all of their rooms. Kiesza, the voice behind this year’s unstoppable hit “Hideaway” plays a live set, and a number of cool DJs will keep you dancing into the late hours.

Disclosure (DJ), Claude VonStroke, Dusky, Ten Walls, Kyle Hall, Isaac Tichauer @ Pier 94
While Disclosure are one of the electronic groups whose live shows are actually noticeably live, they’re also skilled DJs and know how to bring the party that way too. Plus they’ve put together a pretty good lineup all around for this show.

The Dictators, Dirty Fences, Hector’s Pets @ Bowery Electric
Went to both Patti Smith shows this week and wanna keep the CBGB celebration going? Or just want to rock to “The Next Big Thing”? Head to Bowery Electric where Handsome Dick Manitoba and co. (including other longtime members Ross The Boss and JP “Thunderbolt” Patterson) will ring in the new year with a dose of New York rock history. Newer NYC garage rock bands Dirty Fences and Hector’s Pets open.

The Hold Steady, The So So Glos @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Hold Steady continued ripping out their literate rock and roll on this year’s Teeth Dreams, and their recent shows have been pretty generous with the old favorites too. Openers So So Glos are good too — this whole show is sure to be one drunken, rockin’ messy New Year’s Eve.

Deer Tick, T. Hardy Morris and the Hardknocks @ Brooklyn Bowl
Deer Tick wrap up their 6-night run at Brooklyn Bowl tonight with an all fan-chosen set. T. Hardy Morris of Dead Confederate, who’s also in Diamond Rugs with Deer Tick’s John McCauley & Robbie Crowell, opens with his band The Hardknocks.

Quicksand, Creepoid @ Saint Vitus
Post-hardcore as we know it wouldn’t exist without Quicksand, who are quite literally “post-hardcore,” having formed out of the ashes of Gorilla Biscuits, and helped pioneer what that style would become for years. Frontman Walter Schreifels is a busy guy, but Quicksand haven’t played NYC in almost two years. Tonight’s NYE show will be a very welcome return. Sold out.

Rainer Maria, Moss Icon @ Bowery Ballroom
If you’re not going to Quicksand, the other equally great option for fans of ’90s post-hardcore/emo is this show. It’s Rainer Maria’s first show back since breaking up in 2006, and considering the occasion, a lot of drunken feels are sure to be felt. It’s also doubly good because the great Moss Icon (who, like Quicksand, helped pioneer post-hardcore) are on the bill too.

Machinedrum, DJ Spinn & Taso, DJ Earl, Dan Wender & Blacky II, Dave Q, Mess Kid, Tripletrain @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Between being one half of Sepalcure and his solo material, Machinedrum has been an exceptionally prolific electronic producer this past few years. For this NYE show tonight, he’s promising a 3 hour set so you can keep dancing laaaate. Most BKNB shows are free but this one has tickets.

Morgan Geist, Midnight Magic, Pat Mahoney, Jee Day, Dave Harrington, Evan Michael, Motion Studies @ Cameo
Glasslands may be the only Williamsburg venue closing tomorrow morning, but it’s not the only Williamsburg venue that put together a great unique bill to ring in the new year. This one has Morgan Geist of Metro Area, disco band Midnight Magic, Pat Mahoney and Jee Day of Museum of Love (who will stop by after playing live at Irving Plaza) , former Darkside member Dave Harrington, Cameo regular Evan Michael, and GODMODE’s Motion Studies.

Spirit Family Reunion, Mail the Horse, Twain @ Rough Trade
For a rootsy NYE option, Spirit Family Reunion recall old school folk, country and blues.

Wherever you go tonight, stay safe!
