Viet Cong

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Viet Cong, Honey, PC Worship @ Union Pool
With a widely acclaimed debut album just out, Canadian band Viet Cong hit NYC for two shows, tonight being the first.  The whole bill is good, with art-noise act PC Worship and psych-rockers Honey. Sold out.

Death Cab for Cutie, Say Hi @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Death Cab for Cutie are now without Chris Walla, and from the sound of their new single, their new album (first with an outside producer) is gonna be a big-sounding one. The album’s not out til the end of March, but maybe we’ll get to hear more of it tonight. Opening is Say Hi, who’s currently signed to Death Cab’s former home of Barsuk and keeps alive the Northwest sensitive indie pop sound of DCFC’s early days.

Savages, Brian Chase @ Mercury Lounge
Tonight starts Savages’ final week of their nine-show NYC residency. What new surprises are in store? Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase opens the show.

Ramleh, JFK @ Home Sweet Home
British power electronics and noise rock pioneers Ramleh, who are currently Anthony di Franco, Gary Mundy, and Martyn Watts, are in NYC for two rare shows this week. Tonight’s the first, as part of the weekly Nothing Changes party.

Mike Doughty @ WNYC Greene Space
Onetime Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty has written a rock opera based on The Bible’s ‘Book of Revelation’ and he’ll be performing those songs tonight at two shows (early and late) with a full band and backup singers.

Billy Idol, Broncho @ Beacon Theatre
Billy Idol’s got a fair share of undeniable hits from the punk/new wave era — “Dancing With Myself,” “White Wedding,” “Rebel Yell” and “Eyes Without a Face,” to name a few — and we’ll likely get all of those tonight, as well as a taste of his seventh album that came out this past fall. Openers Broncho are a newer band who owe a lot of their sound to the same era Billy came up in. If you’re going tonight, they’re not to miss.

Girlpool, Told Slant, Fraternal Twin @ Silent Barn
Young, quickly-rising Philly-via-LA duo Girlpool are heading out on tour with Waxahatchee later this year and will likely play to some good sized audiences (like at MHOW in April). Before that though, you can see them in the intimate Silent Barn tonight. Good openers too.

Motion City Soundtrack, Vinnie Caruana, Team Spirit @ Irving Plaza
Motion City Soundtrack were quirkier and less melodramatic than most of the mid-2000s pop punk bands they were grouped with, and tonight they celebrate the tenth anniversary of their sophomore album, Commit This to Memory, by playing it in full. Opening is Vinnie Caruana, whose band The Movielife will reunite at this same venue next month, and ex-Passion Pit power poppers Team Spirit. Tonight’s show was rescheduled from last night, due to the snow storm.

Delicate Steve, Julia Easterlin, Evolfo, Stone Forest Ensemble @ Le Poisson Rouge
This show is presented by music education site Soundfly and promises to be a “mini festival” of diverse artists, headlined by very talented guitarist Delicate Steve.

Big Terrific @ Cameo
Max Silvestri hosts the free weekly comedy show in the back of Williamsburg’s Cameo. No word on who’s performing tonight, but Max usually lets us know via his Twitter.
