What's going on Valentines Day? (Aesop Rock, Father John Misty, JSBX, Trophy Scars, My Favorite, Derrick May & more)

Vday

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Father John Misty, Guy Blakeslee (of Entrance Band) @ Bowery Ballroom
With a swagger that seems equal parts Jarvis Cocker, Kris Kristofferson and Neil Diamond, Father John Misty is a ham, but a self-depreciating one with an ace band and a whole bunch of great songs. Sold out.

Paul McCartney @ Irving Plaza
In town for the SNL 40th Anniversary, Paul gives a valentine to lucky fans who managed to get to the box office in time to snag a ticket to tonight’s show.

DJ Windows 98 (Win Butler) @ Baby’s All Right
After Win Butler serves coffee as a barista at La Colombe in Hudson Square today (true story), he’ll head to Baby’s for a late-night set under his DJ moniker, DJ Windows 98. Come prepared to dance.

Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, DJ Abilities, Homeboy Sandman @ Gramercy Theatre
Underground rap fave Aesop Rock released a new album towards the end of last year with Hail Mary Mallon, his group with Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz. Tonight, he and Rob come to Gramercy Theatre together, and on-stage collaborations seem likely.

The Lox, Biz Markie, MC Lyte, Mister Cee @ Marlin Room at Webster Hall
One of the many rap shows happening in NYC for NBA All-Star Weekend, legendary New York trio The LOX (Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Jadakiss) plays this afternoon show at Webster Hall (3 PM doors).

Trophy Scars, Pour The Pirate Sherry, Reese Van Riper @ Arlene’s Grocery
Shapeshifting NJ band Trophy Scars have gone from making high quality post-hardcore to moving outside of the genre into the realm of progressive rock and a Tom Waits-inspired singing style. No matter which mode they’re in, they’re good.

Dawn Landes @ Lincoln Center
The American Songbook Series continues tonight with Brooklyn folk singer and Will Oldham collaborator Dawn Landes.

Two Gallants, Happiness @ Rough Trade
Two Gallants put out their most rockin’ album yet earlier this month, and tonight they wrap up their 3-night stand in NYC on their tour supporting it. Deer Tick side project Happiness open. Sold out.

The Shivers, Tigereye @ Mercury Lounge
Folk duo The Shivers (now with Keith Zarriello joined by Benham Jones instead of Jo Schornikow) released their new album, Forever Is A Word, this month, and tonight they celebrate it with this release show.

E-Town Concrete, VOD, Indecision, The Banner, Suburban Scum, Razorblade Handgrenade @ Starland Ballroom
If you’re spending Valentine’s Day in NJ and want to celebrate at a hardcore show, local veterans E-Town Concrete, LI vets VOD and more have you covered.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Jonathan Toubin (DJ), Shannon Funchess (Light Asylum), Lenny Kaye, Julianna Barwick, Austin Brown (Parquet Courts), Cassie Ramone, Brad Oberhofer, Crocodiles, EZTV, Christian Peslak @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
This is the New York Night Train & Panache Booking Planned Parenthood Valentine’s Day Benefit with a headlining performance from the JSBX, plus  host of indie musicians, as well as the “Village of Love Dance,” a “V-day Raffle with fabulous local prizes” a dating game and more TBA.

The Sons & Heirs, The Steve McQueens, Doug Gillard @ The Bell House
Does you ever feel this way: “Two lovers entwined pass me by, and heaven knows I’m miserable now”? Do you want the one you can’t have and is it driving you mad? Morrissey knows how you feel. He’s not here tonight but is in spirit with this V-Day party featuring Smiths tribute act The Sons & Heirs and Ohio indie rock legend Doug Gillard. The Steve McQueens, if you’re wondering, is a Prefab Sprout tribute band making this a truly special night for ’80s-prone heart-on-sleeve types. Who knows, you might meet somebody who really loves you.

Motion Studies, Katie Rush, Limited, Leisure, Cassie Ramone (DJ Set), Future Punx (DJ Set) @ Baby’s All Right
You’ve got your Valentines Day brunch and evening plans set, but what to do in between? Head to Baby’s for this free 4 – 7PM show. Motion Studies fly the dancerock flag in a DFA style, Limited dabble in ’80s New Romantic and ’90s R&B styles, and Leisure make shoegazy indiepop.

Har Mar Superstar, Computer Magic, Crazy and The Brains @ Mercury Lounge
Entertaining goofball Har Mar Superstar can turn any place into a sweaty party, given his ability to mimic ’80s R&B and funk… he can breakdance too. Tonight’s show is also with talented synthpop act Computer Magic.

Mister Lies, eskimeaux, My Favorite, Band Practice @ Shea Stadium
NYC indiepop cult heroes My Favorite bring melody and melodrama in equal measure.

Dave Chappelle @ Gramercy Theatre
After a lengthy vacation from the spotlight, one of our sharpest comic minds returned to the stage a couple years ago. It’s good to have him back. Tonight’s his third of five shows at Gramercy Theatre.

Matthew Dear, Derrick May, Ambivalent @ Verboten
Derrick May was one of the Belleville Three (along with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson) who created the blueprint for techno in the late ’80s.

Living Colour @ Brooklyn Bowl
Living Colour are currently in the studio finishing up their new album, title Shade.
