Disappears

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Disappears, Suuns, Christines @ Rough Trade
Chicago’s Disappears just released Irreal, the band’s darkest, most paranoid/obtuse record yet. That’s not a bad thing and, mind you, it may sound different when they play it tonight as their songs tend to change after they’ve played them live for a while. Armed with an insanely good rhythm section, they’re worth seeing anywhere, anytime. Same goes for Montreal’s Suuns who have a similar krauty / sinister edge. Local boys Christines open and sound a little like Swervedriver. Highly recommended.

Screaming Females, Priests, Tenement, Vacation @ Knitting Factory (2 shows)
Screaming Females are already known for their shredding guitar solos, but the new album Rose Mountain has the band focusing a little more on great choruses. It’s up their with the best of their previous work. Tonight’s their second and third of the four NYC shows on this current tour. All three openers are killer too.

Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, AEON, Tribulation @ Webster Hall
This all-death metal bill is co-headlined by Poland’s Behemoth, whose 2014 LP The Satanist was hugely and deservedly acclaimed, and one of American’s many favorite old school Florida bands, Cannibal Corpse.

The Gaslight Anthem, Northcote, The Scandals @ Terminal 5
The Gaslight Anthem’s last two albums sound built for the arenas they’re probably just about big enough to play, but luckily for now they’re still choosing slightly smaller rooms. (Not that T5 is some hole in the wall.) Sold out.

Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Summer Moon, Tall Tall Trees, Invisible Familiars @ Baby’s All Right
Sean Lennon’s very Beatlesque band GOASTT headline this sold-out show which features friends Invisible Familiars and Summer Moon (Nikolai of The Strokes, Erika of Au Revoir Simone & more). Sold out.

Murder By Death, O’Death @ Bowery Ballroom
Long-running alt-country/indie rock band Murder By Death released their seventh album, Big Dark Love, earlier this month, and tonight their tour hits NYC for its first of two shows here this weekend. Opening both nights is the raw creepy folk of O’Death.

New York Night Train’s Soul Clap and Dance-Off w/ Nick Waterhouse (Guest Selector) @ Brooklyn Bowl
It’s Jonathan Toubin’s monthly party / dance competition. Tonight, fellow soul lover Nick Waterhouse will be picking the tunes for part of the evening.

Caged Animals, Warehouse, Breathers, Turnip King @ Cameo Gallery
Caged Animals are taking a break from recording their new album to play this show, so expect lots of new songs. Also on the bill are Atlanta indie rockers Warehouse, and Sea Cliff, Long Island’s Turnip King.

July Talk, The Gay Blades, Wet Leather @ Mercury Lounge
Toronto indie band July Talk sound like if Man Man and Stars formed a supergroup, and their style seems like it’s catching on — tonight’s show is sold out.

Yacøpsæ, Bastard Noise, Fistula, Sick/Tired, Psycho, Chainsaw to the Face @ Saint Vitus
Doom/sludge legends Grief were supposed to reunite for this but they unfortunately dropped off. It’s still got a great lineup, though, with German grind vets Yacopsae, long-running power electronics trio Bastard Noise, Ohio sludgesters FItsula, Chicago grinders Sick/Tired, ’80s-era Boston hardcore faves Psycho, and NJ grindcore band Chainsaw to the Face.

Liam Betson, LVL UP, Slight, Doubting Thomas Cruise Control @ Shea Stadium
If you miss punky ’90s indie rock, just about every band on this local bill should scratch that itch.

Fletcher C. Johnson, The Blind Pets, Las Rosas, Dirty Few @ The Acheron
Fans of Burger Records-style garage rock will want to hit this party hardy show with two bands from the label (Fletcher C Johnson and Las Rosas) and two that have associations with them.

Scrapers, Couch Slut, Chain Gang Grave, The Gentlemen @ 538 Johnson Avenue
Scrapers feature a former member of Roger Miret and the Disasters, and they make the kind of no-frills hardcore that sounds like a trip back to 1980. Noise/punk/metal crushers Couch Slut are just as worth seeing and even more confrontational.

Kristeen Young, The Sweet Boys, Hand Job Academy @ Baby’s All Right
Thrown under a bus when Morrissey said she got him sick (and canceling his 2014 tour), Kristeen Young’s anthemic pop deserves better. She plays tonight with jokey rap crew Hand Job Academy.

Wolf Alice, Sunflower Bean, Lazyeyes, Palehound @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar puts local crafts, microbrews, food-truck type eats, mini golf, ping pong, and live music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight’s live entertainment is headlined by UK band Wolf Alice, plus a host of buzzy Brooklyn indie bands…like the young and talented Sunflower Bean.

Demetri Martin @ Town Hall
Master of witty deadpan one-liners Demetri Martin has been outside of NYC a few times lately, but tonight he finally brings his tour to the city proper. Tomorrow he’s in NJ.
