Bjork

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Bjork @ Carnegie Hall
With her MoMA retrospective opening tomorrow, March is unofficially Bjork month in NYC. This is the first of her sold-out NYC Vulnicura shows, and we’re excited to find out what she has in store for us. This one’s a noon matinee.

Suicide, The Vacant Lots, Pharmakon @ Webster Hall
Alan Vega and Martin Rev have been making twisted, distorto-synth music since 1975 and their influence cannot be underestimated. They are still going strong and loud as ever.

Gang of Four, Public Access TV @ Irving Plaza
With guitarist Andy Gill being the sole original member remaining, it’s more like Gang of One these days. Wild vocalist Jon King is kinda irreplaceable, but credit where credit’s due: Gill’s taut style is still being aped today all over the world.

Will Butler, TEEN @ Baby’s All Right
His brother Win gets most of the spotlight, but the Arcade Fire’s Will Butler is a talented singer and songwriter too, as can be heard on his first solo album which is out next week on Merge. Tonight’s his second NYC show with TEEN.w. Sold out.

The Growlers, Broncho @ Baby’s All Right
Party rockers The Growlers released Chinese Fountain back in September which found the band in a laid-back mood, drawing inspiration from twangy early-’60s rock, with a few danceable numbers in there as well. Tonight’s their fourth show of a five-night-stand at Baby’s All Right with Broncho. Doors at midnight for this one.

Courtship Ritual, The Makeout Club, The Veda Rays, Food Stamps, Dead Sexy Sheila @ Shea Stadium
With Monica Salazar’s strong, charismatic vocals and Jerem Olstead’s liquid bass and spare backing, duo Courtship Ritual’s mossy vibe recalls Eno, Japan and early Love & Rockets but not really sounding like any of them. Their album on GODMODE is well worth checking out.

Mark Sultan (of King Khan and BBQ), Dirty Fences @ Union Pool
King Khan & BBQ Show are set to tour later this month, but you can catch one-man-band Mark Sultan (he’s the BBQ) tonight with garage punks Dirty Fences.

Johnny Aries, Crazy and The Brains, Fat Heaven @ Alphaville
One of three Burger Revolution shows happening in NYC tonight, this one The Drums’ Johnny Aries, xylophone-fueled punks Crazy & the Brains, and Fat Heaven.

Honduras, The Yin Yangs, Secret Crush, granny, Mark Perro and Holly Overton @ Aviv
This is also a Burger Revolution show, headlined by Britrock-inspired Honduras.

Wilful Boys, Yes I’m Leaving, Consolidated Plastics @ Cake Shop
Sydney trio Yes I’m Leaving make tightly coiled, lo-fi punk, with flinty bass and overdriven guitars that occasionally go “shriiinng!” If you dig Big Black, AmRep and Toronto’s METZ, you should give these Aussies a go.

Cobalt Cranes, Savants, Spirit Plate, Winstons, Surfbort, Blessed State, High Waisted, Drone Ranger, Worn Leather @ Baby’s All Right (Wake & Bake Fest)
It’s Baby’s First Annual Wake and Bake Festival with a good lineup of local-ish bands. It’s also the first NYC show of the day for Northampton’s Blessed State.

Blessed State, Worn Leather, Summer Saints, Long Drag @ The Flat
The second NYC show of the day for Blessed State is this one. They make melodic post-hardcore somewhere between Braid and early Husker Du. It’s good stuff.

Tournament, Greasy Hearts, Nuclear Santa Claust @ Acheron
Brooklyn punks Tournament have a new LP on the way and the snotty lead single is pretty promising. Catch them tonight with rock and rollers Greasy Hearts and Don Giovanni’s Nuclear Santa Claust.

World/Inferno Friendship Society, Runny, Joey Steel and the Attitude Adjusters, Penguin @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar puts local crafts, microbrews, food-truck type eats, mini golf, ping pong, and live music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight’s live entertainment is the punk, klezmer, cabaret extravaganza known as World/Inferno Friendship Society.

Ski Lodge, Life Size Maps, Mirror Kisses, Soft Spot, Love Spread @ Nola Darling
Slackgaze is putting on this show that features a slew of Brit-indie leaning bands at the Chelsea spot.

Craig Ferguson @ Town Hall
Now that he’s free from hosting a late night talk show, Craig Ferguson has time to get back into standup (well, till he starts filming his new comedy for ABC) and does two shows at Town Hall tonight.

For all of tonight’s shows, and tomorrow’s, check out our NYC concert calendar.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
