Perfect Pussy, So Stressed, Wreck and Reference, Laced @ Baby’s All Right
It’s the second of two Perfect Pussy shows at Baby’s this weekend, both with different openers. This one has Sacramento hardcore band So Stressed (newly-signed to Perfect Pussy singer Meredith Graves’ Honor Press label), metal shapeshifters Wreck & Reference, and Beach Fossils/Nude Beach-related Laced.
Screaming Females, Mitski, Romp @ Asbury Lanes
Shredding NJ trio Screaming Females tone down the attack (just a bit) on their new Rose Mountain LP, instead making room for some of their best choruses yet. Tonight they play their home state with support from the very promising Brooklyn songwriter Mitski.
Diarrhea Planet, Left & Right, Slonk Donkerson @ Bowery Ballroom
Nashville’s raucous Diarrhea Planet make the kind of punky, boozy guitar anthems that are perfect for sing-a-longs, fist-pumping, crowd surfing, beer throwing and other such behavior. Which is to say they’re a lot of fun.
Pampers, Spray Paint, Beech Creeps @ Union Pool
This is the second show of Pampers’ two-night stand at Union Pool and tonight their bilious punk is well paired with Austin’s Spray Paint whose music is kinda like if The Residents collaborated with Big Black as produced by The Intelligence’s Lars Finberg.
Marching Church, Dark Blue, Cheena @ The Acheron
Iceage singer Elias Bender Ronnefelt also fronts another band called Marching Church, who will likely appeal to most Iceage fans too. This is their second of two NYC shows on their current tour, and it has pretty great openers: Philly post-punks Dark Blue (members of Clockcleaner, Paint It Black, Ceremony) and Cheena (members of Pharmakon, Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans, L.O.T.I.O.N., and Hank Wood & The Hammerheads).
Clark, Nosaj Thing, Rival Consoles @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
It’s two electronic masterminds back to back, IDM wiz Clark and glitch hop producer Nosaj Thing.
‘Birdman’ screening w/ Antonio Sanchez @ New York Society of Ethical Culture
Tonight, catch a screening of this year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, Birdman, with Antonio Sanchez performing his own percussive score live.
Spires, Shana Falana, Monograms, Gingerlys @ Shea Stadium
Kingston, NY dreampop artist Shana Falana celebrates her new album, Set Your Lightning Fire Free, tonight with three other likeminded (and quite good) local bands.
Barren Womb, Grizzlor, Husbandry, Before The End @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Norway’s Barren Womb throw hardcore, black metal and classic rock in a blender for their ripping sound, and tonight they make their NYC debut. Connecticut’s Grizzlor are worth getting there early for.
Safety, All People, Broadcaster, Slim Charles @ Suburbia
Among this punk-ish bill is Long Island’s Broadcaster, who add a dose of ’90s-ish alt/indie rock and great hooks to their sound.
Tragedy, The Dangles, The Rocket Queens, Youth Posse @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
“The #1 All-Metal Tribute to the BeeGees in the Tri-state Area” headline tonight’s free Brooklyn Night Bazaar show and if you’ve never seen them, they are pretty much as ridiculous as you’d expect. Fun, too.
Chet Faker, XXYYXX @ Terminal 5
Chet Faker headlines this show, and if you’re going we recommend showing up for XXYYXX too. They do it again at T5 on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as Output late Tuesday night.
Ronnie Stone & The Lonely Riders @ Silent Barn
How serious you take Ronnie Stone & the Lonely Riders is up to you but his intentionally kitschy, ’80s-in-a-blender shtick (somewhere between Bruce Springsteen and Prefab Sprout) is not without craft, even if it is a joke. Check out their song “Kiss the Daddy” below. Tonight’s show requires you to come in costume (either “motor biker,” “goth” or “martial arts warrior.) We have a feeling their show will be as over-the-top as the music implies.
DMX, Mobb Deep, EMPD, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Kid Capri @ New Jersey Performing Arts Center
It’s the return of the Masters of Ceremony show, which is stacked with genuine hip hop legends. Sold out.
Deborah Harry @ Cafe Carlyle
Blondie singer Deborah Harry wraps up her Cafe Carlyle residency tonight.
