Joey Bada$$ / Squarepusher

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Kate Pierson @ Union Square (free, 5 PM)
The B-52s’ Kate Pierson released her first solo album earlier this year (with contributions from Sia and Nick Valensi of The Strokes), and today she’ll be playing songs from it at this free late-afternoon show which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Earth Day New York. (The B-52s played the Earth Day concert in Central Park in 1990.)

Joey Bada$$, Domo Genesis, Lil Herb, Trademark Da Skydiver, Young Roddy, Jstash, Frais @ Terminal 5
Joey Bada$$ put out his first official album, B4.DA.$$, earlier this year, and tonight he plays his biggest headlining hometown show yet. It’s the annual Smokers Club 4/20 show (happening a day earlier) and also includes Odd Future’s Domo Genesis, Chicago drill rapper and Nicki Minaj collaborator Lil Herb, two members of Curren$y’s Jet Life group (Trade Mark Da Skydiver and Young Roddy), hazy North Carolian rapper Frais, and Brooklyn’s JStash.

Squarepusher, Machinedrum, Craz, Alex English @ Webster Hall
Electronic music master Squarepusher continues to push the boundaries of drum & bass on his fourteenth album, Damogen Furies (out this week on Warp). If you’re going tonight, don’t miss footwork great Machinedrum.

Peach Kelli Pop, Crazy and The Brains, Kung Fu Crime Wave, Fern Mayo @ Palisades
Peach Kelli Pop make bubblegum garage pop which you can hear on their third album which is out next week (they’ll have it at the merch booth tonight). Crazy & the Brains, who successfully add xylophone to their punk sound, also play.

Victor Villarreal, Living Room, Verses Narrow, Servant Girl @ Leftfield
Victor Villarreal played in Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls and other bands, and lately he’s been focusing a lot on his solo material too. It’s mostly softer stuff, but his guitar work is as impressive as ever. Openers Living Room owe a thing or two to some of Victor’s former bands, and Verses Narrow (now featuring ex-BoySetsFire drummer Mat Krupanski) have a post-hardcore sound not unlike Quicksand or Jawbox.

Open Mike Eagle, Donwill, Billy Woods, Karma Kids @ Baby’s All Right
Joey Bada$$ maybe the biggest rap show in NYC tonight, but this one’s pretty stacked too. Chicago abstractionist Open Mike Eagle headlines, and then there’s Donwill of the great local trio Tanya Morgan, local underground fave and Blockhead/Aesop Rock associate Billy Woods (who just released his new album, Today, I Wrote Nothing), and wacked-out Astoria crew Karma Kids.

Dawn of Humans, Raw Distractions, Glue, Urbanoia @ The Wick
NYC multi-venue punk festival New York’s Alright wraps up today with just this one show. There’s the must-see locals Dawn of Humans, Tokyo raw punks Raw Distractions, Austin’s killer hardcore band Glue, and Oslo rippers Urbanoia.

Testament, Exodus, Shattered Sun @ The Paramount
Two veterans of ’80s thrash metal, Testament and Exodus, team up for this great double bill tonight, and Testament are promising a set that includes their first two albums played in full (1987’s The Legacy and 1988’s The New Order), as well as cuts from 1989’s Practice What You Preach.

San Fermin @ City Winery
With a sound somewhere between indie and Broadway, San Fermin make stirring, baroque pop. This intimate show is available only to City Winery’s VineOphile members.

Jimmy Whispers, J-Cush, Durban, Chalice @ Elvis Guesthouse
NOTE: We had originally listed And the Kids as playing EG tonight and they are not (there was an error in our calendar database, that show is actually 5/17). Tonight is actually former Light Polution frontman Jimmy Whispers, making lo-fi folk pop. Later, it’s DJs sets from the likes of Lit City Trax’s J-Cush & Durban, plus more.

White Prism @ Ace Hotel
If your taste in synthpop leans towards the Italo stylings of Sally Shapiro, you might want to check out Brooklyn’s White Prism, whose new album, Open Heart Job, was just released. They’re playing every Sunday in April at Ace Hotel.

Cavalera Conspiracy, Death Angel, Corrosion of Conformity Blind, Lody Kong @ Webster Hall’s Marlin Room
Last year, Sepultura co-founders Max & Igor Cavalera’s current band Cavalera Conspiracy released their newest album, Pandemoniom (with Converge’s Nate Newton on bass), and tonight they bring their tour in support of it to NYC. Also on the bill is Bay Area thrash vets Death Angel, Corrosion of Conformity Blind (featuring original CoC drummer Reed Mullin and vocalist Karl Agell, who sang on 1991’s Blind), and Lody Kong (which features Max’s sons Zyon and Igor).

Water Torture, Beefrot, Huldra, Nerve Shatter, Leather Lung
Buffalo’s Water Torture have two bassists and a drummer and they make crushing powerviolence with a ton of power and a heavy dose of noise. They play Vitus tonight and again in May.

Eartheater, Breanna Barbara, Dean Cercone, Bradley Bailey, Songs for the Spirits @ Tarot Society Gallery & Reading Room
Eartheater is the solo project of Alexandra Drewchin, who sings in Liturgy drummer Greg Fox’s band Guardian Alien. She recently put out a new album, which is a very diverse, psychedelic record.

Brooklyn Folk Festival
The annual Brooklyn Folk Festival wraps up tonight at its largest venue yet, St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church. Today’s performers include Jefrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel and more.
