Moss Icon

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Moss Icon, Guerilla Toss, Beech Creeps, Multicult, Voice Coils @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Moss Icon were initially around in the late ’80s and early ’90s and played a type of post-hardcore that influenced many of the emo bands who came in their wake. They’ve been reunited for a few years, but chances to see them are few and far between. Not to mention this is free, and the openers are pretty good too.

Monty Python @ Beacon Theatre
Part of the Tribeca Film Festival, the surviving Pythons will all be on hand for this screening of The Holy Grail which is 40 years old this year. Try not to yell “Ni!” to much if you’re going, ok?

The Juan Maclean (live), Heidemann (live) @ Union Pool
Now in the second half of their six-show Brooklyn residency, DFA mainstays The Juan Maclean move to Union Pool for the final three shows. They’re playing as a four-piece and we hear their Cameo shows last weekend were killer. Sold out.

Hurray for the Riff Raff, Clear Plastic Masks, Gill Landry @ Bowery Ballroom
Hurray for the RIff Raff put out Small Town Heroes on ATO last year, which was the kind of country indebted to decades-old styles rather than the genre’s current trends, without sounding retro. Tonight’s their first of two sold-out NYC shows on this tour.

Expert Alterations, Tall Juan, Green Pages @ Threes Brewing Co
A fine night of jangly, ’80s-style indiepop awaits at this Gowanus venue/brewery tonight with Slumberland Records’ newest band, Expert Alterations, headlining. Also on the bill are Green Pages which features members of The Beets, Sapphire Mansions and Cause Co-Motion.

Incantation, FaithXtractor, Putrisect @ Saint Vitus
US death metal vets Incantation may have had a handful of lineup changes over the year, but they’re still kicking with new albums (like last year’s Dirges of Elysium) and tours.

Hivern Discs (John Talabot, Marc Pinol), JDH & Dave P, Frank Tony @ Output
The Hivern Discs label is sponsoring this DJ tour which features an extended set tonight for Talabot who is promising to testing out new material on club-goers.

Iamsu!, Rome Fortune, Dave Steezy, Chris Miles, Mani Draper, Vashtie @ Marlin Room at Webster Hall
These two rappers, California’s Iamsu! and Atlanta’s Rome Fortune, are currently on tour together and hitting NYC tonight with a handful of openers.

John Mellencamp, Carlene Carter @ Apollo Theater
Having recently released new album Plain Spoken, John Mellencamp brings his rousing, no-nonsense heartland rock to the Apollo tonight.

Livver, Rozamov, Godmaker, Dead Empires @ The Acheron
Seattle’s Livver mix noise and hardcore, and they’re joined by some cool openers tonight including Boston’s sludgy Rozamov.

Shellshag, Crazy & The Brains, Coconut Milk, Drilling For Blasting @ Silent Barn
Two distinct forces in the local scene team up for this show: there’s long-running eccentric rock duo Shellshag, and NJ’s Crazy & the Brains who throw xylophones into classic-style punk.

Yelawolf @ Rough Trade
Southern rapper Yelawolf has a new album which he celebrates with today’s in-store and signing. To get in, you have to purchase the new album from the Rough Trade NYC store and get a wristband.

Mumblr, Soda Bomb, Twag, Hypoluxo, The Obsessives @ 104 Emerson Place
Lomg Island’s Soda Bomb make crunchy, fuzzy power pop that fans of Wavves and Weezer will probably dig.

Tim Fite, Shiro & the Raw Dogs, Joey G, Drewseph @ Black Bear Bar
Brooklyn artist Tim Fite’s last album was 2014’s iBeenHACKED, which he described as “a music/art project satirizing and celebrating the highs and lows of digital culture, examining the ways technology and connectivity are hacking our daily lives, and altering the codes that we live by.”

Dead Leaf Echo, Spires, Dinowalrus @ Alphaville
Anglophile alert: while none of these three shoegazybands are actually from the UK, most of their record collections probably are. This is a good triple bill for anyone who owns Ride or Primal Scream albums.

Breakfast In Fur, Rhino House Band, Maybird, Sam Yield @ Cake Shop
Hudson Valley quartet Breakfast In Fur make anthemic, sweeping dreampop, as can be heard on their recently-released Flyaway Garden.

San Fermin, Son Little @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
With a sound somewhere between indie and Broadway, San Fermin make stirring, baroque pop. This is their second of two release shows at MHOW for their new album, Jackrabbit.
