Speedy Ortiz

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Speedy Ortiz, Mitski, Krill @ Bowery Ballroom
Speedy Ortiz’s new album, Foil Deer, takes the band into new sonic directions without losing their style of discordant indie rock that made us love the music in the first place. Very powerful lyrically too. Both openers tonight are great — the artful, unique NYC songwriter Mitski and the Boston indie rock band Krill.

WBAR-B-Q w/ Perfect Pussy, Dubbel Dutch, Big Ups, Thug Entrancer, Bodega Bay, Palberta, Swings, Stud1nt, Diet Cig @ Barnard College
It’s Barnard College’s annual WBAR-B-Q with noise punks Perfect Pussy, dance producer Dubbel Dutch, post-hardcore band Big Ups, ambient musician Thug Entrancer, and more. As always, it’s free, all ages, and open to the public.

Into It. Over It., Major League, Tiny Moving Parts, Collect Yourself, Safety @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Into It. Over It. is one of the many bands led by the great Evan Weiss, who’s been one of the key guys in this whole “emo revival” thing, working with Mike Kinsella to You Blew It! to The Jazz June and more.

The Juan Maclean (live), Julien Tregoat (DJ set), Computer Magic (live) @ Union Pool
Tonight’s the last of The Juan Maclean’s six-show Brooklyn residency. These shows mark the debut of their new four-piece lineup which we’ve heard is killer. Sold out.

Primus @ The Paramount
Primus will be out with Dinosaur Jr this summer but tonight they continue their Charlie & the Chocolate Factory concept album extravaganza with the Funghi Ensemble.

Bonnie Stillwatter (aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy + Watter) @ various NYC bars
The great Bonnie “Prince” Billy (aka Will Oldham) has a new collaboration with psych rock band Watter (mems of Grails, Slint) and in honor of that, they’ve teamed up with beer company Stillwater Artisinal Ales for today’s celebration. They’ll play one song each at NYC bars Jimmy’s No. 43, Cooper’s Craft & Kitchen, Fool’s Gold, Spuyten Duyvil, and The Well, and each bar will have their new record and Stillwater Beer available to purchase. Full schedule and more info at the above link.

Tall Firs, Sue Garner, Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht @ Trans-Pecos
Tonight’s event is billed as “an evening of short, stripped down performances by musicians from our community here in NYC. We’re tying to create an intimate environment with a mellow, share-a-tune vibe. No “third wall” allowed.” Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo is among the artists performing.

Hurray for the Riff Raff, Clear Plastic Masks @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Hurray for the RIff Raff put out Small Town Heroes on ATO last year, which was the kind of country indebted to decades-old styles rather than the genre’s current trends, without sounding retro. Tonight’s their second of two sold-out NYC shows on this tour.

Dorthia Cottrell, Blackout, Shroudeater @ Saint Vitus
Dorthia Cottrell fronts the awesome doom metal band Windhand, but this year she also decided to strip things down and put out a psych-folk solo album. Both styles suit her well.

Museum of Love @ Good Room
The DFA band Museum of Love, featuring Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem, are resident DJs at Good Room and tonight spin with Italy-based produced Bottin.

The Waterboys, The BlueBonnets @ Irving Plaza
Longrunning Irish band The Waterboys just released Modern Blues, their first album of entirely original songs in eight years.

Holy Sons, Lichens, Ancient Ocean, Mixed Doubles, Ancient Sky, Worthless, Public Speaking, Catrina Calavera @ Baby’s All Right
It’s the 2015 edition of Brooklyn’s annual pysch-heavy Brain Cave Festival which boasts an eclectic lineup and visuals by Drippy Eye Projections. The fest continues on Sunday.

Rule of Thirds, Survival, Pawns, Nandas @ Silent Barn
Australia’s Rule of Thirds put out a killer deathrock/punk EP in 2013, and they just recently followed it with their first full length. The LP’s a bit more on the Joy Division side, and they’re good at both sounds. Tonight’s their last NYC show on this tour.

Container, Eric Copeland (of Black Dice), Sasha Jan Rezzie @ Palisades
Tonight’s show is part of Bushwick venue Palisades’ 1-year anniversary, and it features noisy electronic great Container and Black Dice’s Eric Copeland in solo mode.

Wray, Mobile Steam Unit, GEPH @ Baby’s All Right
It’s the second of two NYC shows for Alabama shoegazers Wray on their current tour.

Expert Alterations, My Teenage Stride, Summer Saints, The Bad New Ones @ Pet Rescue
A fine night of jangly, ’80s-style indiepop awaits at this Bushwick DIY spot with Slumberland Records’ newest band, Expert Alterations, and NYC royalty My Teenage Stride headlining. WFMU’s Paul Bruno will be DJing in-between sets.

Fielded, Phork @ Elvis Guesthouse
Avenue A’s new hot spot (and Baby’s All Right sister venue) Elvis Guesthouse hosts a $5 show tonight with dark pop purveyor Fielded.

Wizard Rifle, Netherlands, The Austerity Program, Tween @ The Acheron
Portland’s noisy, sludgy Wizard Rifle return to NYC tonight with Timo Ellis’s synth-punk band Netherlands and post-hardcore duo The Austerity Program.

Cheetah Chrome, Split Squad, The Fleshtones @ Bowery Electric
It’s a very late-’70s NYC kind of evening with Dead Boys’ Cheetah Chrome, The Split Squad (which features members of Blondie, Plimsouls & more) and “super rock” creators The Fleshtones.

Arc Waves, Crown the Invisible, Dead Heart Bloom, Boyd Shropshire @ Cake Shop
Boyd Shropshire has been playing in Philly bands for years — you may remember him from mid-’00s indie rockers Human Television and he’s also spent time with Kurt Vile & the Violators. Shropshire’s most recent solo album, Victory Weather, was released last year.
