Friday’s show was billed as the premiere of Pop Cube, “a multimedia reality network,” whatever that is. It started with a stunt. With the audience lined up along the sidewalk, a white stretch S.U.V., not quite a block long, pulled up and gradually disgorged the performers outside a red-carpeted entrance.
The first, QT, posed for photographers and then put on headphones in an outdoor D.J. booth and started playing electronic pop. Soon, everyone was a momentary celebrity; the audience also used the red-carpet entrance, photo opportunities included, against a backdrop of logos.
Inside, BRIC’s gallery had become a combination of party space and backstage TV studio; the D.J.s were Dux Content, the duo of Mr. Cook and his longtime collaborator, Danny L Harle. Audience members could, a sign offered, “Get your picture taken with a pop star!” — the rest of the performers. Their encounters were shown on video screens. In a glassed-in studio, the group Thy Slaughter flailed at instruments like a grunge band, with its singer swigging from a bottle of whiskey, although the speakers broadcast Dux Content’s set instead. – [New York Times]
UK post-pop collective PC Music made their NYC debut in spectacular fashion on Friday night, a happening at BRIC House dubbed “Pop Cube” featuring Hannah Diamond, Sophie, QT, Danny L Harle, GFOTY and more. Part of Red Bull Music Academy, “Pop Cube” winkingly treated everyone like a celebrity — you walked the red carpet to get in as photographers snapped pics — and its over-the-top design probably reinforced however you feel about PC Music (if you’re aware of its existence). It was certainly not boring. The Times review doesn’t mention it but the Thy Slaughter rock band incased in a glass studio included Dev Hynes and Sick Feeling’s Jesse Miller-Gordon, displayed (unheard) like an exhibit at the Natural History Museum. This was a post-post-post modern event. Pictures continue below…
