Riis Park Beach Bazaar coming to Rockaways (with free concerts every weekend, food, shopping & more)

Riis Park

The people behind Brooklyn Night Bazaar (which coincedentally just got word it has to close), announce Riis Park Beach Bazaar:

We are proud to announce that the National Park Service has granted Brooklyn Bazaar a 5 year lease to develop programming, food, and beverage services at Jacob Riis Park Beach beginning Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday, May 23) 2015. Just as the Brooklyn Night Bazaar is a new take on the traditional flea market, Riis Park Beach Bazaar will reimagine the beach experience on Jacob Riis Park’s historic and pristine waterfront. We look forward to hosting abundant activities, entertainment, shopping, food, and drinks, which when combined with the sea and sun, will result in a New York beach experience unlike any other.

Most importantly, they say “Riis Park Beach Bazaar will continue our tradition of FREE concerts every Saturday and Sunday afternoon.” Shows are being promised through the end of September, but meanwhile only a few shows are announced, including this:

MORE INFO:

Riis Park Beach Bazaar will feature permanent food operators at the Bay 9 and Bay 6 food concession areas during the peak summer season – Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, from 11:00a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week. Bay 9 is a large pavilion (and a former Howard Johnsons) that will act as our food and drink hub. It also features a large, newly renovated kitchen and prep space. Bay 6 is a stand alone food concession building directly facing Riis Park’s iconic clock tower. In addition to stationary food stalls, we will rotate highly regarded mobile food popups along the boardwalk to create even greater convenience to beachgoers.

The current roster of food concessionaires at Bay 9 and Bay 6 include:
Ample Hills Creamery From
Brooklyn Star Rising
Court Street Grocers
Wild Feast Foods Wild
Fletcher’s BBQ
La Newyorkina

Additional permanent and popup food concessions will be announced shortly.

Of course, Riis Park Beach Bazaar will feature all kinds of interactive beach activities as well. Areas of the beach and boardwalk will host everything from beach volleyball, sand soccer, ultimate frisbee, touch football, street and inline hockey, paddleball, and much more. Beginning on May 20th, every Wednesday features the Rockaway
Volleyball League. Additional events such as a sand sculpting competition, kite flying festival, 5K & 10K races, wine and craft beer festivals, car expos and more are planned.

Riis Park Beach Bazaar Saturdays and Sundays will also feature multiple pop up merchant vendors along the boardwalk, displaying their arts and crafts, antiques, new and vintage clothing, sunglasses, jewelry and records. In addition, there will be service oriented vendors such as nail artists, tattoo artists, hair stylists, tarot readers and many others. Local Rockaway father and son team Steven and Christian, both original NYC surfers, will operate a permanent sundries stand on the boardwalk.
We are working on making the trip to Riis Park Beach Bazaar a breeze, including dedicated bus shuttles throughout NYC, increased ferry service to nearby Riis Landing, and plenty of car share options. Beach chair and umbrella rentals will be available. Beachgoers will even be able to order food and drink directly to their beach chairs using a
smartphone! Custom beach passes will also feature package deals including bus/ferry shuttle service, food, drinks, games and beach chair rental.
