One very prevailing trend in the punk scene right now is tons of bands bringing shoegaze into their sound, and coming out with a heavy/atmospheric blend that’s making Hum look like a more influential band than ever before. Those bands are all making great records, but credit where it’s due: a handful of metal bands have been keeping the heavy/atmospheric thing alive for years — like Rosetta, who have been putting out killer albums for the past decade. Though Hum was never a band I tended to think of while listening to Rosetta (maybe more Neurosis or Isis), until today’s release of new single “Untitled V.”

Rosetta have done clean vocals before, though usually more in a higher-pitched fashion which does show up later on in the new song, but the low singing and thick heavy guitars that open this track are the unmistakable sounds of a band gazing away at those shoes. Perhaps part of that is because it’s their first album as a five-piece, with Eric Jernigan of the Hum-ish City of Ships contributing guitar and vocals. Metalheads, fear not though. This sprawling seven-minute trip has plenty of screamed, aggressive moments as well. The song is from their upcoming album, Quintessential Ephemera (due this June via War Crime / Golden Antenna), and you can stream it below (via Noisey).

The Philly band have just a few shows coming up this June, one of which is opening their hometown stop of the BrooklynVegan/Invisible Oranges/Party Smasher Inc-presented Dillinger Escape Plan / Mutoid Man / Primitive Weapons tour, which happens 6/17 at Union Transfer (tickets). Unfortunately they’re not on the NYC stop (6/20 at Irving), but tickets are still available for that one too.
