The Who

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Who, Joan Jett @ Nassau Coliseum
The Who are currently on the road celebrating their 50th anniversary, and tonight’s their first of five shows in the NYC-area. At this point, they have enough hits to put out a double album compilation of them (which they did last year), and these shows are sure to be filled with them. The great Joan Jett opens on all dates.

Primal Scream @ Irving Plaza
Having dabbled in punk, dub, dance music, straight-up rock n’ roll and just about every other genre, Scottish band Primal Scream have managed to stay fresh longer than most other bands originating from the mid-’80s, and frontman Bobby Gilespie remains the epitome of lanky cool.

TV on the Radio, Bo Ningen @ Kings Theatre
It’s been about a decade since TV on the Radio were considered a “Brooklyn buzz band,” but fortunately they’re still a very good band, as reinforced by last year’s Seeds. Tonight’s their first of three NYC-area shows on this tour (including NJ with the Pixies and Terminal 5). Bo Ningen, who are quite the sight to see, open the show.

Courtney Barnett, Chastity Belt, Darren Hanlon @ Bowery Ballroom
With a terrific new album and charmingly awesome live show, it’s no wonder Courtney Barnett sold out three nights at Bowery Ballroom. If you’re going, be sure to get there for Seattle’s Chastity Belt and onetime Lucksmith member Darren Hanlon.

Palma Violets, Public Access TV @ Bowery Ballroom
UK band Palma Violets offer up big hooks and laddish camaraderie and wild fan reaction. Their new album, Danger at the Club, just came out this month.

Mariachi El Bronx @ Baby’s All RIght
When the members of The Bronx aren’t making ripping punk rock, they’re making mariachi music under the name Mariachi El Bronx. They have dates coming up opening for Flogging Molly and Gogol Bordello, but first they’re headlining some smaller shows of their own.

Jason Isbell, Craig Finn @ Capitol Theatre
Jason Isbell hasn’t been a Drive-By Trucker since 2007, but in the time since then he’s released four solo records. Most recently he put out the quality Southeastern in 2013. Opening tonight’s show is Craig Finn, who fronts The Hold Steady and also has a worthwhile solo career of his own.

Tall Juan, Acid Dad, Sun Abduction, Water, Little Tony @ Good Room
Originally from Buenos Aries, Argentina, Tall Juan has been making music in NYC for a couple years now, and you may have seen him playing with another Juan (Wauters) at shows recently (and as part of The Beets). Like Wauters, he makes ramshackle, garagey folk-pop. Tonight’s part of his four-Thursday residency at Good Room.

Buffy Sainte-Marie, Samantha Crain @ Highline Ballroom
Folk legend Buffy Sainte-Marie has been putting out records for over 50 years, and returned this year with Power In The Blood, her first album since 2008.

Geographer, Stranger Cat, Port St. Willow, Salt Cathedral @ Rough Trade
Sufjan Stevens/Sharon Van Etten/Shins collaborator Cat Martino makes electronic pop with Sven Britt as Stranger Cat, and the duo recently released their debut album on Joyful Noise. Tonight’s the release show, and “loads of special guests” are promised.

Ghoul, Phobia, Nekrofilth, Artificial Brain @ Saint Vitus
Oakland’s genuinely creepy Ghoul are on the road in continued support of last year’s Hang Ten EP with Phobia and Nekrofilth. Tonight also has quality local support from Artificial Brain.
