You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Northside Festival‘s four-day takeover of North Brooklyn is in full swing today with basically every venue in Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick involved. There are lots of shows but we’ve highlighted our picks here — noted by the “(Northside)” in the event name. You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows.

Against Me!, Mitski, Cayetana @ McCarren Park (NORTHSIDE, day show)
This show happens during the day, it’s totally free (RSVP is still open), and it’s got a great lineup all around. Reinvigorated punks Against Me! headline, and support comes from two indie rock newcomers, Brooklyn’s Mitski and Philly’s Cayetana.

Merchandise, Sunflower Bean, GABI, Bully @ UO Live Stage (NORTHSIDE, day show)
Here’s another free afternoon show (right on Bedford Ave / N5), and with a very diverse lineup: Florida’s Smiths-inspired post-punks Merchandise, local psych band Sunflower Bean, ambient/art pop musician GABI, and Nashville rockers Bully.

Best Coast, Built To Spill, Alvvays, Bully @ 50 Kent (NORTHSIDE)
This one’s pretty cool all around with Best Coast, who recently put out their poppy major label debut, indie veterans Built to Spill, who returned with their high quality eighth album this year, jangle pop breakouts Alvvays, and a second set of the day from Nashville rockers Bully.

Blonde Redhead, Christopher Bear & Aaron Arntz @ Warsaw (NORTHSIDE)
Indie vets Blonde Redhead have made dream pop, noise rock, electronic pop, and more in their 20+ year career, and they continue to be great, both in the studio and on stage. Tonight’s their first of two hometown NYC shows on their current tour.

Pusha T, Vince Staples, DJ Envy @ House of Vans
Clipse member and Pusha T made his official debut as a solo artist in 2013 with the well-received My Name Is My Name, and he’s planning to put its followup out this year. Rising rap star of the moment Vince Staples opens, making this a great double bill.

Thug Entrancer, CO LA, GABI, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Ben Zimmerman @ Aviv (NORTHSIDE)
It’s the Software Records Northside showcase, with a good lineup all around of experimental electronic artists.

Black Commando, Yvette, Malory, Hand of God, Fitness, Plebeian, The Present, Motion Studies, Kill Alters, Soft Lit, SHRAF, Fasano, Mila Matveeva, Courtship Ritual (DJ Set) @ Muchmore’s (NORTHSIDE)
Godmode Records celebrates its third birthday with this all-day show featuring almost all of its diverse, high-quality roster. Things finish with a midnight set from fiery duo Yvette.

Blues Control, Hex Message, Ohal @ Union Pool
One of the best NYC free summer music series, Union Pool’s “Summer Thunder” brings live music and good times to the venue’s backyard. The fun starts at 2 PM with bands not too long after.

Viet Cong, Girl Band, American Wrestlers @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (NORTHSIDE)
While there are definite echoes of Gang of Four, Wire, Neu!, Joy Division and other postpunk/kraut influences, Viet Cong don’t really sound like any of them. It’s a weird, complex blend of those things, put through a kaleidoscopic lens filter that’s best experienced live. This is their first of two Northside shows with intense Irish group Girl Band.

Calvin Love, Michael Rault, EZTV, The Holydrug Couple, Heaters, Moonwalks @ Baby’s All Right (NORTHSIDE)
This is the Panache Booking Northside Showcase, featuring Canadian singer Calvin Love, Chilean psych-rockers The Holydrug Couple, Brooklyn’s jangly EZTV and more.

Graham Parker & The Rumour, Lowell Thompson @ Highline Ballroom
The original lineup of pub rock / new wave greats Graham Parker & the Rumour released their new album, Mystery Glue, earlier this year which finds them in fine, cantankerous form.

PINS, Doomsquad @ Rough Trade (NORTHSIDE)
Manchester quartet PINS released their second album, Wild Nights, this week via Bella Union and it’s a marked step up from their debut. If there’s a little less sneer and snarl this time, it’s in exchange for better songs and smoky, brooding atmosphere.  They play tonight with Toronto’s funky Doomsquad.

Nude Beach, Tall Tales and the Silver Lining, Invisible Familiars, 178 Product @ Union Pool (NORTHSIDE)
This is Other Music Recording Co’s Northside showcase, headlined by Nude Beach who do punky, heartland rock quite well.

Dax Riggs, Isadora @ Mercury Lounge
Dax Riggs will always be known in some circles for his work in the influential ’90s sludge band Acid Bath, but he’s gone on to an extremely impressive career since — his discography includes work with both Agents of Oblivion & Deadboy & the Elephantmen, along with a string of more recent solo efforts. Riggs’s otherworldly voice has only improved with age, and his acoustic solo shows are arguably the best showcase available for his talents

Guantanamo Baywatch, The Mystery Lights @ Elvis Guesthouse
Portland beach party garage rockers Guantanamo Baywatch just released the fun Darling…It’s Too Late album and are in NYC for two shows. Tonight’s the first and it’s with Brooklyn psych band The Mystery Lights. This should be a fun/crazy show in as tiny a place as Elvis Guesthouse.

Knyfe Hyts, dubknowdub, Firelake Mongrels, Honey, Beech Creeps, Ex-Models, Ovary Action, Smhoak Mosheen, Murder Murder, Sto Len, Patchy Drizzle, Sea Sick Life, Monster Manual @ Secret Project Robot
DIY spot Secret Project Robot celebrates its 10th anniversary with this all-day show that is headlined by Knyfe Hyts — which will be that band’s first show in some time. Congrats on 10 years, SPR!

Holly Miranda, Coastgaard @ Knitting Factory (NORTHSIDE)
Holly’s celebrating the release of her new, self-titled album tonight at this Northside show. Any chance to hear her ethereal voice should be taken.

Timeshares, Luther, Make War, Outta Gas @ Suburbia
Timeshares’ new album and first for SideOneDummy, Already Dead, is the kind of twangy punk album that fans of Hot Water Music, Lucero or The Gaslight Anthem need to hear. They celebrate it tonight at the small Bushwick DIY spot Suburbia.

Gun Outfit, Ukiah Drag, Sediment Club, Ancient Sky, Psychic Blood @ Shea Stadium (NORTHSIDE)
This is the Wharf Cat showcase, and it’s pretty stacked with punk-minded slowcore band Gun Outfit, psych punks Ukiah Drag, no wavers Sediment Club, heavy psych practitioners Ancient Sky, and the grungy Psychic Blood.

Self Defense Family, Wildhoney, Somerset Thrower @ Acheron (NORTHSIDE)
Boundary-pushing post-hardcore band Self Defense Family team up with shoegazers Wildhoney and grunge-punks Somerset Thrower for this diverse triple bill.

DJ Premier (with live band), Orchestra Holistic @ Brooklyn Bowl (NORTHSIDE)
Legendary rap producer DJ Premier was back in the spotlight last year thanks to his excellent Royce da 5’9″ collaboration, PRhyme, and tonight he’s teaming up with a full band for a live Brooklyn show.

Bell Witch, Prurient, Akitsa, Alberich @ Saint Vitus (NORTHSIDE)
Pitchfork’s metal column, Show No Mercy, throws their Northside showcase tonight with doomers Bell Witch (who recently released the great Four Phantoms), black metallers Akitsa (who recently released the great Grands Tyrans), and local noisemaker Alberich. UPDATE: Prurient is the special guest.

Blanck Mass @ Saint Vitus
After that Pitchfork show, Vitus hosts an equally devastating late show with the industrial leaning Blanck Mass (aka Fuck Buttons member Benjamin John Power)< who recently put out Dumb Flesh on Sacred Bones.

Lucius, Luke Temple, Pavo Pavo @ Prospect Park
If you’d like a night of poppy, relaxed indie, pretty much everyone on this lineup will be just what you’re looking for.

Xiu Xiu, Bottoms, EULA @ Palisades (NORTHSIDE)
The excellent, boundary-pushing Xiu Xiu teams up with two cool local artists tonight: the “gender-problematizing goth dance band” Bottoms and noise rockers EULA.

Shigeto, Michna, Lord Raja @ Knitting Factory (NORTHSIDE)
If you’d like to dance all night after your regular 8 and 9 PM shows are done with, one option is heading to Knitting Factory for Shigeto, and…

DJ Spinn, RP Boo, TRAXMAN, Total Freedom, Tripletrain @ Palisades (NORTHSIDE)
…another option is heading to Palisades for this lineup made up mostly of footwork greats, or…

Ryan Hemsworth, Tommy Kruise @ Santos Party House
…a third option is going to Santos for pop/rap producer Ryan Hemsworth.

A Concert to honor AJ Pero, featuring Twisted Sister @ Starland Ballroom
Sadly, Twisted Sister drummer AJ Pero passed away this year, but to honor their bandmate, the rest of Twisted Sister will come together for this concert in NJ tonight.

Embrace, Starsailor @ Webster Hall
Flashback to the early ’00s Britpop days when all bands seemed to be aping Radiohead’s anthemic style. Tonight features two bands who were UK chart mainstays back then.
