Dillinger Escape Plan

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Dillinger Escape Plan, Mutoid Man, Primitive Weapons @ Irving Plaza
This is the final stop of this killer triple-billed tour that BrooklynVegan is proudly co-presenting with Invisible Oranges and Party Smasher Inc. Three different sides of heavy music are represented tonight: DEP are bringing the mathcore, Mutoid Man have a mix of hardcore, metal and bluesy swagger, and Primitive Weapons do post-hardcore with a metallic tinge.

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade
Coney Island may slowly be getting a makeover but its annual freak flag extravaganza remains one of the last vestiges for Weird NYC. This year’s King and Queen are husband-and-wife freakshow/burlesque performers Mat Fraser (who was on the last season of American Horror Story) and Julie Atlas Muz (who has, among other things, performed at the Whitney Biennial and has opened for Psychic TV).

Clearwater Festival @ Croton Point Park (Hudson, NY)
One of the most chill, pleasant festival experiences to be had, Clearwater takes place along the Hudson River in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Today’s lineup includes Los Lobos, Neko Case, David Crosby, The B-52’s Kate Pierson, Sam Amidon and more.

Dead Moon, J Mascis, Borbetomagus, Das Audit @ Pioneer Works
Portland garage punk legends Dead Moon, who existed from 1987 – 2006, are back in action with Fred & Toody Cole, plus drummer Andrew Loomis all returning. Tonight’s show, with J. Mascis, Borbetomagus and more, happens at one of NYC’s more unique (and cavernous) spaces, Red Hook’s Pioneer Works.

Soul Asylum, Meat Puppets @ Brooklyn Bowl
Usually, the only place to see Soul Asylum and Meat Puppets together was probably on that one episode of MTV’s Alternative Nation from 1993 where both “Runaway Train” and “Backwater” were both played. But the two bands bands are on tour together, and this is their first of two NYC shows.

Paul Weller, Hannah Cohen @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
With an acclaimed new album Saturns Pattern, the onetime Jam and Style Council frontman is focusing on his solo career on this tour. Last week’s T5 show only got one Jam song. Perhaps he’ll pull out “My Ever-Changing Moods” tonight, though.

Christopher Owens, Weeknight @ Baby’s All Right
The onetime Girls frontman dropped new album Chrissybaby Forever on us out of the blue and was a nice return to the kind of back-to-basics guitar pop Owens is really good at.

Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World Festival @ Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
The second year for this free festival features Ms. Lauryn Hill, Shannon Powell’s Traditional All-Star Band, Antibalas, Ozomatli, Rebirth Brass Band. Free tickets are all taken, but there are paid options still available.

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga @ Radio City
Veteran crooner Tony Bennett and outsized personality Lady Gaga collaborated on duets album Cheek to Cheek which debuted at #1 and won a Grammy. Tonight they’ll play live, their second of four Radio City shows.

Jaga Jazzist, Taylor McFerrin @ Webster Hall
Long-running, genre-crossing Norwegian band Jaga Jazzist are just released their jammy, proggy, synthy new album titled Starfire via Ninja Tune.  They bring it to life with a seven-piece band.

Jungle, Ibeyi @ Centra Park SummerStage
UK dance act Jungle could use a little more variety on their debut album, but live it’s hard to deny they do what they do well. Free show, 7 PM

Pill, Neonates, WALL, The Hairs @ Alphaville
Pill make skronky post punk with an emphasis on punk and are well matched tonight with DC’s Neonates which shares a member with Priests. Come early for funny, slightly bitter indie rock courtesy The Hairs.

Quintron & Miss Pussycat, Earth Eater, Toothaches, Haribo, Bottoms, Fluct, Ryan Sawyer, Nate Wooley, Ben Vida, and more @ Secret Project Robot
One of Secret Project Robot’s 10th anniversary shows, this all-day show featured a cavalcade of out-there artists, noise-rockers and general weirdos, headlined by the always-awesome Quintrton & Miss Pussycat.

Sick Feeling @ Palisades 2014 (more by Ryan Muir)
Sick Feeling

Sick Feeling, Chaos Chaos, Dadras, DreamCrusher @ Trans-Pecos
Sick Feeling were supposed to be in Toronto for NXNE tonight but forces kept that from happening. Instead, they’ll play Trans Pecos tonight. Ripper punk.

Hot Sugar, Crying, Yung Gutted @ Union Pool
One of the best NYC free summer music series, Union Pool’s “Summer Thunder” brings live music and good times to the venue’s backyard. The fun starts at 2 PM with bands not too long after. Today’s lineup includes Kitty Pryde collaborator Hot Sugar, and chiptune / pop punk band Crying.

Ma Jolie, Choke Up, Pass Away, Living Room, The Tracys
Ma Jolie’s new EP Jetpack Mailman is ripping punk that should appeal to fans of Dillinger Four, Latterman, or Shed-era Title Fight. Their tourmates Choke Up are worth catching too.

Aviator, Tri-State Era, Forever Losing Sleep, Servant Girl @ Bushwick Public House
Aviator do a similar kind of ’90s/early ’00s post-hardcore revival to bands like Touche Amore and Pianos Become the Teeth. If you’re a fan of that kind of thing, last year’s debut album Head In The Clouds, Hands In the Dirt on No Sleep is promising stuff.

Nikki Lane @ Union Pool
Country singer Nikki Lane is long overdue for a new album, and apparently has one cooking as we speak. Hear some new songs tonight.

Tim Barry, Northcote, Allison Weiss @ Saint Vitus
Avail frontman Tim Barry ditched punk for rootsy folk a while ago, and most recently released his solo album, Lost & Rootless. Opening the show is Allison Weiss, who just signed to SideOneDummy.

Peter Ulrich @ Studio at Webster Hall
Peter Ulrich played drums and percussion in the early years of Dead Can Dance, and is on many of their 4AD albums, including 1984’s self-titled debut and 1987’s Within the Realm of a Dying Sun. He also contributed “At First, and Then” to This Mortal Coil’s Filagree & Shadow and played on Wolfgang Press albums as well. He’s released a number of solo albums, too, which don’t stray too far from the gothy, orchestral folk of Dead Can Dance. His band, The Peter Ulrich Collaboration play their first-ever show tonight.
