Shonen Knife @ The Wick

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Soul Asylum, Meat Puppets @ Bowery Ballroom
Usually, the only place to see Soul Asylum and Meat Puppets together was probably on that one episode of MTV’s Alternative Nation from 1993 where both “Runaway Train” and “Backwater” were both played. But the two bands bands are on tour together, and this is their first of two NYC shows.

Shonen Knife, CJ Ramone @ Le Poisson Rouge
Seeing how Shonen Knife’s brand of poppy punk stems directly from The Ramones, this tour with CJ Ramone should make for a fun double-bill.

The Front Bottoms, GDP, Youngman Grand @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
We’re still waiting on The Front Bottoms’ followup to 2013’s great Talon of the Hawk, but they recently released the new “West Virginia” single which had all of their usual elements intact (nasally vocals, super specific lyrics, part folk, part pop punk). These guys are getting pretty big — tonight’s show is small for them at this point, and unsurprisingly sold out.

Om, Blazer Sound System @ Saint Vitus
Om is the collaborative project of two very busy musicians, Al Cisnero (Sleep) and Emil Amos (Grails, Holy Sons), and together they make out-there psychedelic music. Tonight’s their second of two shows at Saint Vitus.

Parquet Courts, Naomi Punk, PC Worship @ Palisades
Olympia, WA trio Naomi Punk draw from a variety of noisy/aggressive ancestors without really sounding like them. 2014’s Television Man is a warped, sneery, garagey blast. Oh, and just today Parquet Courts were added to the bill!

Aye Nako, Katherine, Street Eaters @ Silent Barn
Aye Nako have a new EP on the way via Don Giovanni, and the first single is a bit harsher than 2013’s poppy Unleash Yourself. Maybe we’ll hear more new stuff tonight.

Jim Adkins (of Jimmy Eat World)
While Jimmy Eat World’s later stuff hasn’t been so hot, there’s no denying they’ve got a few essential records of ’90s/early ’00s emo. Frontman Jim Adkins is currently on a solo tour, and it doesn’t hit NYC but if you have a car this show’s not too far. Tomorrow he’s in Hamden, CT.

J. Cole, Bas, Cozz, Omen @ Irving Plaza
J. Cole has a huge MSG show coming up, but if you want to see him somewhere more intimate and for way less money, tonight he plays a smaller $1 show at Irving Plaza.

Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
All aboard Wyatt Cenac’s weekly comedy cavalcade, this week with guests Jared Logan, Katina Corrao, Jordan Temple, Casey James Salengo, and more.

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga @ Radio City
Veteran crooner Tony Bennett and outsized personality Lady Gaga collaborated on duets album Cheek to Cheek which debuted at #1 and won a Grammy. Tonight they’ll play live, their third of four Radio City shows.
